Sold one......bought one!

Well, the old Mopar world has been interesting for me in the last few days. On Monday night I got a phone call asking me if I was still interested in a '51 Dodge D39 Business coupe I have been trying to buy for the last 15+ years. I said yes but I have a '41 Dodge sedan I bought a while back and can't really afford to have it plus buy the '51 coupe. I put the '41 Dodge on Kijiji that night, sold it the next day and bought the coupe the following day. l actually sold the '41 for $100.00 more than I paid for the coupe. Coupe is rough but restorable. Unfortunately, it has sat outside a lot of years. It has the original D39 engine which turns and I will likely be able to get running to see what I have. I think one reason I got it for a good price is that the seller knew that I wouldn't hot rod it as so many other buyers likely would.

Anyway, I went out today and only had to put a couple of spare rims and tires on the '51 coupe after finding out that two tires would actually hold air after being flat for so long. A friend with a trailer and I will move the car to my place on Monday. I will clean it out and see what I have for floors. Rockers are decent so that is a plus. Should be a fun project down the road!

Interestingly, both Dodges were made in Canada and based on the Plymouth body with Dodge trim added. Anyway to the pictures. First two show the '41 I sold and the rest are the coupe. Windows on the coupe look frosty because they are as it was a below freezing morning. Really glad the back window is in the car as it would be hard to find otherwise. I am a happy camper!:)

What's the story on the Pilot-House truck next to it? Looks like a '51 or '52. Is it Dodge or Fargo?

Merle, I am pretty sure it is a Dodge but will check next time I am out. The seller has about a dozen old mopars sitting out there and I am afraid most will go to the crusher if he can't sell them by the end of April. He has no other storage and the farmer who owns the field where he has them wants that area for new granaries. He has a '47 Desoto sedan and a '49 Plymouth two-door fastback I might make a low ball offer on. I would hope to resell rather than part them out which actually brings a lot more money. Desoto is pretty rotted but the fastback is a decent project.

Recently bought this '51 Dodge D39 as mentioned at the start of the thread. It had sat outside for the last 20 years at the very least. This morning I went out with a friend and brought it home to its temporary parking spot. I want to see if I can get it running and clean it out really well to see what I have. Before winter, I will get it in my garage and start the tear down. I will leave the body on the frame and do what needs doing. Anyway the pictures. First shows the car loaded on the trailer and the rest show it under my car port where at least it is now out of the worst of the weather.

It looks like the original color was Wedgewood Blue (that's what they called it in the US). Are you going back to stock or taking the car in another direction?

The blue is actually grey and it was repainted at some point with a cheap black paint job. Mechanically, I plan on taking it back to stock as that is always my preferred way as many members already know. There are enough hot rods around. It has the original D39 engine which to me is another plus. If you look at some of the pictures you can see that the driver's side front fender, which was replaced at some point, was green and that is the colour I will likely paint the car eventually. I have always liked that colour on the early '50's Chrysler products.

Thanks. The body is pretty solid except for the floors. Rockers seem OK at this point. Previous owner who let the car sit outside for 20 years left the horse-hair floor matting in the car with the rubber mat on top. We all know that means a water trap once the car is no longer weatherproof. Front windows leaked and the floor has to be replaced. Should get that done this winter.

Robert..found a guy parting out a 50 Dodge while at the swap meet..no useful stuff...the letter D was not there so could not tell you if just the filler trim on the Plymoth hood would have been the difference..

I believe you are right.:P I'll pass that along to the owner of the Chev truck.
