MoparAl- Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Hi guys, i was just wondering, how many of ya are running without oil filters ? my bus coupe that ive just imported came with no filter setup, apparently its been like that for some time and the motor runs real sweet ! Al Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Sure that might be fine if you changed the oil way more often, your internals are clean. Even a By-pass partial flow oil filter, would be a whole lot better than none, full flow is the best but partial flow, should be the minimum. But having said that, it's your engine, and if you are okay with no filter, who am I to tell you any different, I would change the oil every 500 miles, in your case. Quote
Andydodge Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Al, I can relate to this.......the "restored" 41 Plymouth Coupe I bought 5yrs ago had no filter...........lol..........you'd think even if it was ordered that way ex factory that 60yrs later when it was restored a filter would have been a no brainer........anyway I decided that if it needed a filet then I'll get a pretty one........it'll match the new engine , if ever I get it built........regards, andyd Quote
greg g Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 The manual call for oil changes at 2000 miles on filter less engines. With today's oils and cleaner driving conditions, (a marked lack of paved roads back then) I'm sure you wouldn't hurt it staying with that interval or even longer. How many miles do you think you may put on annually? Probably like most of us 2000 is in the neighbor hood. So an oil change at the beginning of the season, or at the end should stand you and your engine in good stead. If you are not comfy with that change it more often. Or invest in filter set up. The old style are available on e bay and there are aftermarket adapters that take modern spin on style filters sold by many of the aftermarket speed shop catalogs. Quote
MoparAl- Posted February 13, 2012 Author Report Posted February 13, 2012 Thanx for that info Greg, being i live on a " little island " the annual mileage will be less than 1500, and i also drag race my 71 ten weekends a year ! So i think changing the oil annually as i do anyway on any car that i own is on the cards. Would like to hear though from anyone that has run their P15 like this to get a feel of how sturdy these motors are. Al. Quote
54Illinois Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 I wondered about the whole filter set up issue. I read that the filter was an additional option. Being an 1/8th inch line, I cannot imagine how long it takes to filter the entire 6 quarts of oil. Quote
TodFitch Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 I wondered about the whole filter set up issue. I read that the filter was an additional option. Being an 1/8th inch line, I cannot imagine how long it takes to filter the entire 6 quarts of oil. My understanding is that it takes maybe 5 or 10 minutes. With respect to what type of filter is "best" there are issues with both full flow filters and bypass filters. Seems like those people who are serious about oil filtering use both. And they use a "depth type" media on the bypass filter. Do a web search on "bypass oil filter benefits" and you'll come up with a number of arguments why a bypass filter, especially if used with a full flow filter, is a good thing. Quote
oldodge41 Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 No filter on mine for the last 20 years. I have a bypass setup that I keep meaning to install. One of these days I probably will. :o Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 In those days cheaper cars came with no filter but oil change intervals were shorter. The filter was optional at extra cost. The filter is a good idea, they are not hard to find or install. Elements are available. But as has been pointed out, if you don't drive a lot, and on today's paved roads with little dust, and change the oil regularly it won't make a lot of difference to engine life. You might want to take off the oil pan and scrape out the dirt every 10 years. Quote
54Illinois Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 How is the full flow filter hooked up? Quote
TodFitch Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 How is the full flow filter hooked up? Unless you have a later Chrysler or DeSoto 25" block that was setup for a full flow filter you'll have some modifications to make. Seems like many people modify the oil pump and/or boss on the block where the oil pump attaches to have a place to plumb the hoses to a remote full flow filter. Quote
greg g Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 The bypass filter handles about 30% of the oil flow at any given engine speed. If anybody knows the output volume of the oil pump the time needed to pass all the oil by volume could be calculated. AS w know oil pressure if the most important function of the system as well as providing some cooling. With cleaner air, unleaded gas, and better oil chemistry than 60 years ago, for a limited use vehicle, why bother. adding plumbing, and brackets. Besides it gives folks something to scratch their heads about. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 The bypass filter with the correct element gets the oil cleaner than a full flow. The full flow may be better than a bypass but the bypass is better than nothing. In fact I am not sure the full flow is that much better than the bypass. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 The single most important thing is DO NOT hang a full flow decal on a by-pass filter. Looks tacky This is a by-pass filter. This is a full flow filter. Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 Don is referring to this, at the time, I had no other decals, and being a 47 Chrysler, it would have had a full flow filter. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 Fred maybe we should start our own club Quote
54Illinois Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 I have installed a new filter and gasket, and when cranking the motor it leaks from under the lid? I may pull mine and put the plugs in... Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 Mine did that too, it has to be tightened more than you think. Crank it down. Quote
54Illinois Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 Mine did that too, it has to be tightened more than you think. Crank it down. I thought I did...thanks, I will do it some more! Quote
Andydodge Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 MoparAl....you mentioned you were going to give the car a run on the 1/4 mile........sounds like a great idea...........I'd be putting a filter on for no other reason than this, but thats just my opinion...........andyd Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 I thought I did...thanks, I will do it some more! On my lid , The tightening bolt was running out of grip as the lid was indented in the center from years of use . The solution was to use a hammer to remove the indent from the lid center . Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 24, 2012 Report Posted March 24, 2012 (edited) The top picture in Don's post is my car. He is correct.....I do have the wrong decal on a bypass filter. Two reasons for that -- first I didn't know about full flow filters and their function at the time I placed the tag. Second, that was the only tag that came with a set of decals I purchased. So I used it. I have since bought a regular oil filter tag (a yellow one as I recall). I think it's in some box somewhere.....following the tornado. If I can't find it, will eventually buy another one. I think having the decals looks good. As you can see, I dressed up the filter bolt with a chrome acorn nut cover. I may have put some duct tape inside to hold it in place.....been a while since I did it. Just pull it off to change the filter. It also matches the acorn covers on the head bolts.
