GM Alt Install/Mock up

Hey all, took my 10SI GM Alt in today, had it tested, and was going to buy a self-energizing regulator, it worked ok, but the bearing were toast.

I may a decision whether or not to buy the reg and bearings, then bought another from the shop, would have been the same price, which was fairly cheap, since this shop makes up theri own 1 wire GM alts, and apparently sells them like crazy.

Got the alt home, and went to work on the bench, and fabbed up some brackets, have seen similar on here and on other forums, I still need a bit longer fan belt, but it is sitting not too bad. Here are the pics......

Looks good Fred;

The belt I used is a Gates 11A1245 or a Car Quest 7490XL.

I believe that all 1933-49 Plymouths used the same belt. My notes say that I've got a Goodyear Hi-Miler 22494 installed. My notes also say that its a 49 3/8x3/4 with 38 degree angle.

edit: The Chrysler part number for the P15 fan belt is 1117603. Entering that into the NAPA Online site I get a cross to NBH 2524489

The belt numbers I posted are not P-15. They are the later model skinny belt numbers such as I use on my later model 53 Desoto engine in my car.

Does anyone make a 1/2 pulley for a GM Alternator? I want to keep the wide belt with my P15.

OldDad67's comment threw me off, I thought that the old style wide belt was what was being asked about.

Thats a nice lookin engine you got there Deez, Hey I go onto the GM 1 wire, it is simple, and I hope it works well for me, it should. It is a 45 amp, and that should be plenty for my needs.

The shop where I bought it, he rebuilds his own, using 10SI 3 wire alts, and makes them into 1 wire alts, new innards, and good to go.

I am with the dezel on the alternator issues..the Moapr 'dual field' as it is know but we all know it is just an open end flied is perfect..external electronic regulator. Two second trouble shooting, replaceable brushes without even having to disconnect the battery or remove the laternator...gets nomore simple than this..have never had to replace an alternator..have replaced a brush set or two and two voltage regulators..the regulators wee still putting out and keeping the battery charged..but light would pulsate a bit at night on lower RPM..basically bulletproof..

They say, that GM 1 wire alts are hard to find at the average "Parts Counter", as the 3 wire are more common either the 10SI or the 12SI. On solution is to keep 1 of the self energizing regulators, if you were in a bind, could buy a 3 wire, and conevert in about 1 minute.

I am not making any pro or con comments just yet, I do prefer the look of the Mopar alts, but the Delco alt is where I am at right at the moment. If I had been able to find a 12 volt gen, would have used it, as I have a nice 12 volt reg to go with it.

On a 48 Dodge I had I used a stadard GM 3 wire alt and got a wire harness with a diode built in from Speedway. Very easy to hook up. The harness was $14 and the alt was a $35 remanufactured unit from Advance. Worked great and still came out cheaper than a 1 wire. Plus it charged at low RPM.

I can't tell you how many time I hear a 1 wire will not charge at idle. I installed one in my Dodge a few months ago (already had it so it was free) and it goes to 30 amps at idle right after start up. Then it settles to about 1-2 amp rate in about 10 seconds....... Hot engine so RPM's do not go above 600. The only thing that didn't charge at idle was my stock generator. I say it's hogwash that they don't charge at idle.

The 1 wire will charge at idle once the regulator has been excited. After start up the rpm must be raised to excite the regulator, it will then charge normally.

I must have a super duper one that excites at 600 rpm??? Come to think of it, my father has one of those super ones on his 47 Ford. Specifically tested it yesterday, RPM"s did not go above 600. Went right to 25a.

Mine won't charge on start up until rpm is increased then it's fine. Maybe when mine goes bad I'll get one of those super duper Kalifornia ones. :rolleyes:

I also must goose my engine to around 1500 RPM's once started to "excite" (now that is one of my favorite words) the alternator. Once excited it does its thing until the engine is turned off.
