Desotodav Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Great videos Mark. I agree with Hank. I planned on not installing indicators on my 52 truck, but then I found that very few people on the road these days understand hand signals. I installed dual-filament 'pigtails' in my parker buckets and turned them into parkers/indicators. I installed a couple of small discreet 'bullet' style indicators in the rear. I found that this gave me peace of mind knowing that other road users knew what I was up to when making a turn. I also agree with Paul about the engine revs - having legally driven heavy vehicles since I was 19 years old. I am sure that with time you will be well aware of the optimal revs for your truck to manage a smooth gear change. I had to replace a second gear syncro ring in my gearbox during rebuild. I am told that the Studebaker one used was a perfect match for the Mopar one. Dropping back to first gear whilst moving poses more of a problem for my truck. Well done on the project so far mate! ggdad1951 Posted June 1, 2012 Author Report Posted June 1, 2012 Don't you have a syncro trans? There should be a syncro assembly between 2nd and 3rd making those shifts easy. Maybe there's a problem with it. Merle lord knows what I really have, if you remember my fill plug was in an odd spot. The tranny was rebuilt/gone over by a reputable place. I think 2nd is still a straight cut gear, up and down between 3 and 4 is no problem, up from 2 is no problem, just down to 2. Reminds me of driving the old IH tractors on the farm....jam it into gear! Quote
pflaming Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Drive it on an incline and find where the 2nd gear is asking? Leave it there for a while and LISTEN until that sound is in your mind. The shift to third for a while, then release 3rd, rev the engine just above that "sound" and have the 2nd gear waiting. With a little pressure on the gear shift, it should pull in. I drove Model D John Deere tractors. We could shift in and out of gears to coast down a good hill without using the clutch and I would guess those gears are not syncronized. Play with it, it'll give. Dodgeb4ya Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 All New Process 4 speeds for the Pilot House trucks are Non Syncro down into 2nd gear from 3rd regardless of drain plug location. Ya Gotta learn to double clutch it! Bob Quote

Ya Gotta learn to double clutch it! Bob Yes, double clutch, turn the steering wheel, and balance your cup of coffee, while holding one arm out the window to signal a turn. Yah right! Quote
wallytoo Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 i gotta be honest. i don't drink coffee in my truck. too much work just driving it without worrying about spilling or burning myself. i also like having turn signals. the double clutching and split shifting is fine, though. Quote
John-T-53 Posted June 11, 2012 Report Posted June 11, 2012 I like the look of the pin stripes...adds a nice detail. Did the truck have them before? Did you use One-Shot? Coffee...I've had a to-go cup several times between my legs in the truck while on my way to meetings with work. I need to get a seat top console for days like these. A few months back I set the cup o' coffee on the seat next to me while I had to do something else, forgot about it, and seconds later I felt my rear get really warm as the cup was sideways. Low budget heated seats! Quote
48Dodger Posted June 11, 2012 Report Posted June 11, 2012 No bumper, no turn signals, no rear view mirror, no brake lights, no license plates and no cops. Everybody needs a boost like that. Looks really good. Made my day! My favorite part is NO GLASS! Always love the wind in my face! Quick cop story. In the spirit of "cops are car guys too"....I had bought a 68 Charger and felt I could drive it home. We were close, and it was a runner. The problem was it had no exhaust system and was a built 440. Point A to point B was a country drive.....but....we needed to stop and get gas in town. Did we bring gas? Heck no. Could we have towed it? Of course.......but this was just a quick stop to the gas station, right? It was loud...I mean REALLY LOUD....so loud we attracted a crowd and two squad cars....lol. They loved the car....realized we had the proper paperwork for a newly purchased used car. But told us we were in serious violation of the noise ordinance. They kinda laughed it off and had an idea. They gave us an escort to our country road home as well as a pair of thumbs up! I hope Mark would have gotten the same kind of treatment had he been stopped....its a GREAT looking truck!! 48D Quote

ggdad1951 Posted June 15, 2012 Author Report Posted June 15, 2012 got some glass in today...and promptly cracked the glass by over tightening the inner bezel: temporary running boards and mudflaps for the show and until the bed is done: Quote
Desotodav Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Geez Mark, I reckon that if you didn't have bad luck you'd have no luck at all !!! Desotodav Quote
ggdad1951 Posted June 20, 2012 Author Report Posted June 20, 2012 windows all in (except the roll ups). I SERIOUSLY wonder why anyone would try to install windows themselves...installed the center rear, pulled and replaced the windshield and set the roll ups in 30 minutes! Tonight I set the roll ups and I'm (hopefully) water proof! Quote
ggdad1951 Posted June 20, 2012 Author Report Posted June 20, 2012 ...and I come home to my expected package from Restoration Specialties and see the box is MUNCHED, and know w/o even opening it, parts will be missing and damaged....which they are...so no roll up window install tonight :( Hopefully RS is good with overnight for the parts so I can have my roll ups in for the show this weekend..... Sigh.....I need a beer or dozen... Quote
Todd B Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 What is the beer count up to now?? I would like to know so I can budget for the future. Quote
B2B Ed Higbee Posted June 22, 2012 Report Posted June 22, 2012 Mark, I did the same thing. Thightened the inner trim on my drivers side windshield and cracked the lower corner. I'm just living with it for now. Ed Quote
ggdad1951 Posted June 23, 2012 Author Report Posted June 23, 2012 first LONG trip, first time on the Interstate EVER (ooo 45mph!) and first day at the show...all good and lots of compliments! Only negative was coming home I had two distinct metalic "cluncks" about 1/2 mile from home. Ran him thru all the gears up and down, checked the drive train, nothing really seemed amiss. Fluid levels good, pressure and temp good...so....guess I'm gonna hazzard that it was possible shuttling in the rear diff and pray it's nothing serious and I'm over scared/paranoid still. 1 Quote
Desotodav Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 The old FEF sure turned out nice. Well done on both the trip and the restoration Mark. I hope the metallic clunk was just something minor. Desotodav Quote
HanksB3B Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 Very Very Nice! Those wheels are prize winners! Were the clunks more like "pings" if so it has to do with the relative positioning of the front and rear universal joints. Someone knows the skinny on that I'm not certain enough to make a statement. Hank Quote
ggdad1951 Posted June 23, 2012 Author Report Posted June 23, 2012 Well I think the clunks I heard was the drag link hitting the oil pan! Have a new weeping oil leak near a brazed crack repair and paint marked up right above the drag link. My sump is in the rear of the engine and Ed wondered if it should be in the front for pilothouses? I know the engine is a replacment so.......... Quote

ggdad1951 Posted June 23, 2012 Author Report Posted June 23, 2012 day #2 at teh 50's....talked to a bunch of people and hopefully got a new member! just for Merle...I had to include the Vikes tent next to me from the people from WisconSIN! Quote
ggdad1951 Posted June 23, 2012 Author Report Posted June 23, 2012 (edited) It's always Sumpthing.. Ain't it!, Hank so....what yer saying....is I gots me a backwards pan! Can one flip it around? Or at least swap out parts to make a front sump work on how my engine is? Ed has a forward pan he'd swap for my rear.... just confirmed from my tear own pictures....my pan is the opposite of the picture Hank posted! YIKES! Might explain some damage that had to be repaired!
