55 Fargo Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Does anyone know the trans gear ratios for 1955 Dodge trucks, both for 3 and 4 speed, not sure what I have yet....thanx Fred 1 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 not off the top of my head Fred..it is according to the rear gear installed in the truck also..as you now have a higher ratio modern gear you may have to wait to see the actual speedo reading and calculate the tooth count from there..you may not be able to find a correct gear for the taller gears and may need to buy a corrector to put inline. That is why you will need to know the percentage of the error..they are a number sold acroll the counter but can be made to correct about any +/_ error up to 200% Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 Thanx Tim, did verify by tire and driveshaft rotation count diff is 3.23 or thereabouts. So the spec of the trans will be different now with the modern dif. The brakes are not bad, bled them in the dark this morning the light of the flashlight, and help from my Boy.There is way too much free paly on the mc pushrod, but at least the brakes work good, and do not appear to leak. Have not checked the diff level yet, would it be straight hypoid 90 gear oil. This frame appears to have linkage fora column shifter set-up, wonder if that was installed piro to the trans in there now, which I have no clue if it is a 4 spd or 3 spd yet, but its a floor shifter..... Dave72dt Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Gear ratio coming out of the trans in high gear is 1:1 unless you have an OD. Speedo gears are based on the 1: 1 ratio, tire size and rear diff ratio. Quote

I figure I will not have issues doing 65 mph with my set-up, even if I stay with 15 inch tires....thanx Fred Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 I don't have the ratios for you, but here's a couple of things to check to know if it's a 3 speed or 4 speed. First off, the 4 speed is a much bigger trans and usually has a PTO access on the side. (rectangular cover plate with 6 bolts holding it on) The 3 speed is smaller and won't have any PTO access. Also, the pattern is a simple "H" pattern on a 3 speed. R=in and up, 1st=in and down, 2nd=away and up, 3rd=below 2nd. A 4 speed would be 1st=in and up, 2nd=below 1st, 3rd=middle up, 4th=below 3rd, R=away and down. And just to be clear, "in means towards you, "away" is away from you, "up" is towards the dash, "down" means towards the seat. Merle Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 the speedo drive is off the main output shaft and is always correct road speed regardless of the gear you are in.. Quote

ggdad1951 Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 run it thru the pattern and see what ya got, best way to know for sure! Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 11, 2011 Author Report Posted October 11, 2011 Thanx Reg, mine appears to be a 4 speed, but reverse is out and up, from the drivers position. The steering box has Ingersol Machine stamped on it, is that the same as the US trucks. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 That trans doesn't look like a NP transmission-AKA a "New Process" chrysler built trans. It might be a warner trans. A friend once had a Canadian Dodge panel with a strange shift pattern into reverse like yours Fred- it had a warner 4 speed in it. We tore it out and did a custom R10 OD install in it so it would go real fast to all the swap meets. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 Dads 54 IH has the reverse over and up pattern. The 46 dodge with the 4spd its over and down. Fred what does the little rod and lever on the left go to? Quote

Fred what does the little rod and lever on the left go to? It does not go to anything, looks like some kind of column shift linkage. I dunno, exactly wht has taken place on this set-up, all seems okay, the clutch rods, are a little funky, and will need attention. You know this isa perfect Candidate for a T5 trans, and it would go like hell, this truck is light, and with the 3.23 diff, should get some good cruising speed, but maybe a little slower off the line. This trans may or could be different thana US based Dodge, don't know if Fargo trucks , had different parts, hey the engines were all 25 inch, so possibly the trans too, it is a 251 120 hp engine.... Mickkc77 Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) Ok everyone one is talking about shift pattern. I recently purchased an early floor shift 3 speed box and would be keen to know what ratios they have 1st and 2nd. Obviously 3rd is 1:1. I guess while we’re on the topic reverse gear ratio would be good to know too. Edited March 8, 2022 by Mickkc77 Typo Quote
