Alexander Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Hi Folks, My rear end (diff) has never been quiet. It Hums during acceleration and declaration. Its most likely due out of spec back lash adjustment. I don’t want to spend the time adjusting it as I feel Ill never get it right. Anyone have a known good rear they would like to let go? Thanks! Alex I am located in the North East (NJ) Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 If you dont want to spent the time adjusting it simply add some sawdust to the oil mix. That used to be a common practice with shady used car dealers. I also have a slight whine in my rear end. But I have checked for hot spots and found none so I will live with it for now. Have you checked for hot spots? Quote
dezeldoc Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I have a 3.91 i will let go of for 50.00 Quote
Alexander Posted October 5, 2011 Author Report Posted October 5, 2011 wow itresting, saw dust! Kind of makes sense. I am very dempted to try it. what years would be a direct bolt on replacment for my 47 ply (as a fully assembled axel). what is the stock ratio for the 47? would I feel it if I went a little lower (3.55)? Thanks! Alex Quote

Young Ed Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Those tricks were used my shifty used car salesmen just to make a sale. I highly doubt they were much of a long term fix. Quote
Adam H P15 D30 Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 I found a diaper in the lower cover of a chevy bellhousing once to hide a rear main leak. Quote
Alexander Posted October 5, 2011 Author Report Posted October 5, 2011 Thanks for the feedback. Although I am tempted, I prefer a permanent fix. what years would be a direct bolt on replacement for my 47 ply (as a fully assembled axel)? what is the stock ratio for the 47? Quote

Thanks! Alex A friend of mine and I are in the process of wrecking 2 -46-48 Chryslers, that he owns. Both Windsors, should have 3.54 s in them. But being a Canadian built 46-48 Mopar Car, it has the common modern U-joint yoke. Not a big deal, you could use the driveshaft too, it might need to be cut down, but you would have modern ujoints both ends, The only big deal is shipping all the way to NJ from Manitoba Canada Quote
Young Ed Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Stock ratio for 47 should be 4.1:1 some may have come with 3.9:1. I swapped a 3.73 center section into my stock housing and it works well. Lots of other options if you want to swap to a more modern axle. If you are wanting a mopar replacement I think only 46-48 fit possibly some of the prewar ones fit too so you'd be better off swapping the center section in that case. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 as Ed said..4.1 or 3.9..the gear in the car was selected for the area of operation..if the car was to be shipped to a hilly area..it got the 4.1 else, the 3.9 was more commmon..as most of my cars were southern go-moes..they have all had 3.9 rear units.. greg g Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 You could try taking the drive shaft off and see it the pinion nut will tighten up a hair. I had a Triumph GT6 way back when. A friend suggested that procedure, and it this case it really quieted down the rear. It didn't take much, when we put the old pointer style torque wrench on it I beleive we took it from 100 lb ft to 115. might be worth a try before you dig into things. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 best thing is these are removable hogheads and working the unit on the bench is quite feasible..the book will give you a great help doing this..pattern test, load , coast etc..preload all possible to test as an assembly...what you got to lose but a bit of time..if you don't have a huge vice to clamp it in you can build a jig Quote

JerseyHarold Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Alex, There is a driveshaft place in Farmingdale that may be able to adjust the axle you have. I don't know their name but they should be fairly easy to find. Harold Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 It probably needs more than an adjustment, bearings and possibly a R&P set. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Somewhere, perhaps at the first of this forum in the reference section, is a list of later model Mopar rear ends that are good fits.....may have to change the spring perches a bit. I believe Mr Coatney has one such later model setup in his car. Quote
Alexander Posted October 6, 2011 Author Report Posted October 6, 2011 Thanks Harold and Aero! Good place to keep in mind. However I suspect I need more then ajustingat this point. I have been driving like this for years. I think the teath are now worn and tapered too much. Harold, do you go to any of the local shows with your car? I usualy try to make the "Friendlys cruise-in" saturday evenings (RT 9 and Ferry rd.). great show, Free, Trophies & prizes, about 300 cars on average, starts & 6pm, 3 shows left. Swing by, it would be great to meet you. Look for the only P15 at the show (Dark Blue) Quote
JerseyHarold Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Alex, My cars are not roadworthy at this point. I stopped at the Friendly's cruise once in mid-July but didn't see a P15. If I can make it in the next few weeks I will. Harold Quote
