Mark D Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Sitting here contemplating my first ever carb rebuild. Anything in particular I need to keep in mind? Anyone got a source for a rebuild kit? Would I be better off finding a shop to do it, or sourcing a second carb as a spare and learning on that one? Here's a few photos taken today of what I'm dealing with. Any insights happily accepted. claybill Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 buy a cheapie for 20 bucks and learn on it.....buy a kit from NAPA for 16.00 good to go. Quote
Alshere59 Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 (edited) About any of the rebuild kits are good NAPA Autozone etc. These are fairly eay carbs to do. Just make sure you get them clean. I highly reccomend a good dunk in cleaner like the link below. https://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=MCR6402_0006414466 Edited April 18, 2011 by Alshere59 Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 I've bought several kits off E-bay for spares. Fairly cheap. Tom Quote
1941Rick Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Good carb to learn on.....just lay everything out on the table and put it back where it came from. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Ditto what the others said. It's easy. Be careful of small parts and take the opportunity to clean out passageways. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Do a forum search for carburetor rebuild and you will find many helpful tips. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 watch out for the little balls! Very good point. The smaller BB goes under the accelerator pump. If you put the big one in there it will get stuck! Quote
greg g Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 (edited) go to the old carbrouchureproject web site, click on links, click on carburetor doctor or carbuetor king (I forget which one) look up carter BB, and you can click on the repair manual, and enlarge the rebuild pages. Oh hell just click here http://oldcarmanualproject.com/manuals/Carbs/Carter/BB-downdraft/1939up/index.htm Unless it's really crudded up, you usually do not need to remove the jets, some carb cleaner and compressed air and mechanics wire will most likely get them cleaned up fine. Thanks Gregg! I am getting ready to rebuild mine and this will be a big help. One question though, is the tool really needed when removing and installing the main vent tube? The only experience I have with carb rebuilding is on mowers and my Whizzer, and they are a lot simpler than these. Thanks, Carl Quote

Yes - big BB goes in smaller hole - little BB goes in Bigger hole - ask me how painful it was to get the big BB out of the Accelerator pump. Quote
greg g Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 If you have compressed air you shouldn't need to pull stuff. Just make sure you protect your eyes. Quote
Mark D Posted May 3, 2011 Author Report Posted May 3, 2011 Excellent viseo links Mike. This is exactly what I needed to see. Quote
John Mulders Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 NAPA $21.49AB about $49 + with shipping same kit shop wisely Shel, is there a NAPA partnumber for a Carter single Barrel (stock). John Quote
TodFitch Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 This may be it. It lists the model #'s covered.https://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?A=CRB25066A_0186038498&An=599001+101948+50056+2056056 One of the issues with NAPA Online is that the search pages can't be linked to. At least I haven't figured out how. I think you are referring to their Echlin fuel system parts CRB 25066A which, if you search Google for that also turns up http://www.capitolsupply.com/gsa/catalog/4-3-265-cid-l6-5399661/carburetor-kit-25066a-napa-crb25066a-25066a-napa-crb25066a-cs7422470.html which I think is linkable. That link says its for a 1952 Chrysler Windsor with a 265 cu. in. engine. Not sure if that'd be the same for the era Plymouth. Quote
Mark D Posted May 5, 2011 Author Report Posted May 5, 2011 So today I got some time to do some web searching and I think I can now confirm my carb is not original to the car. Googling the digits on the carb with "Carter" as a search qualifier brought me to the "carbkitsource" website and there it was listed as a DODGE TRUCK carb. I'd visited the site before, but there was no tool to search by carb number on the site. Excerpted image attached. I'm guessing the Previous Owner must have had an issue in the past with the stock carb and he replaced with what was available. So I made a call up to RMP and Gary Roberts had the rebuild kit it in stock, it's on its way to me now with a hand brake relining package and a few missing hood bumpers. My weekend is now full of enough distraction to keep me away from the honey-do list for another week! Quote

Want to maybe come by Sat. after 3 or so? We can check your linkage, dial in your distributor, and check this out too... They accepted our offer on that Hanover house, so I don't have to go house shopping this weekend! Quote
Mark D Posted May 5, 2011 Author Report Posted May 5, 2011 You got a date! And I'll take that rod too! Met up with another of our fellow Mass residents last week who pointed out the missing rod as well. He bent a bailing wiare template for me that's in place now, waiting for an oem piece! Congrats on the house Moose. Now all you need is some neon over the door announcing your in business. I'll drop you a call Saturday afternoon, supposed to be good weather all weekend. Quote
