BobT-47P15
Here's a link to an article on the How Stuff Works website describing swamp coolers. Basically they are just blowing air past a dampened material inside the cooler. I have a car swamp cooler out in the shed that I bought a while back. Not such a great deal for my convertible, but am saving it just for looks if I get another old car. If you notice, a lot of fellows who've built the "bombas" use the coolers, often painted to match the car. Mainly, I imagine, 'cause they look cool. http://home.howstuffworks.com/swamp-cooler.htm
littlemo
I met and married my lovely wife Carmen in 1969 in Clovis NM while still in the service. The only type of "air conditioning" we had at that time was a so called "swamp cooler". Actually it worked quite well in that climate with it's low humidity. Wouldn't work worth a D_ _ _ here in Missouri !! lol ... Cass, alias, Littlemo ...
Alshere59
I had a swamp cooler while stationed at Edwards AFB while in the service also. It cooled to about 10 to 15 degrees below ambient when it worked well. They also added a lot of humidity, which in a desert is helpful at times. The honey comb that the water ran over needed cleaning fairly often as I remember. If it wasn't clean you got very little cooling and a musty smell. I think that for any place other than a desert, it is just a period correct decoration that the owner may want to add. It is up to the car owner if it justifies the cost for something that may not work well, or if it would make their car look better. When it comes down to it, people buy things for a lot of reasons. I also think you answered your original question Mike. Edited February 8, 2011 by Alshere59
IronMike
The educated with the briefcase have stolen more money than the uneducated with the gun ever have......... Either way, money (or a lack there of), nor formal education (or a lack there of) are any indication of a man's work ethic or character....... michael.warshaw
this will be my last post on this forum, as all i get here are people who are so rude, and start for no reason. Id like to say thanks to all those who helped answer my questions, i am just going to be a lurker here, like many others who get bullied by the old women who try to run things here! There is only one boss here which is GTK. I guess when retirement comes around the forum police job comes with the territory. G-d Bless, see you on the streets. Maybe gtk will sell me the forum, so i can make it a better place for car people and not bullying? Michael, I stayed out of this one, but I have to feel sorry for you, as you really don't have a clue as to how easily you manage to hit everyone else's hot buttons. Apparently all of your degrees didn't teach you common sense or humility. I've got a degree, worked lots of years in high tech industry as an innovator, wrenched on exotic race cars as a hobby. I've had my 47 Plymouth since 1994, and yet every week I learn something more about it that I didn't know before. All I had to do was listen to all the people with more experience than I have, and share my experiences with things that I have done. And if GTK ever sells you the forum you'll be very happy with it, because you'll have it all to yourself in short order. Marty

dezeldoc
Wow this is like the energizer bunny, it keeps going and going. How many blow ups has Michael had? He isn't going anywhere, i think he does this just to see how many will get riled up. He actually does not have all the $$ he brags about, he works as a machine operator at a plastic injection company during the day and at night he delivers pizza. all his $$ is in this car. BobT-47P15
I guess there are still enough people who think they're nifty and a period item for their car......and few enough coolers that they aren't readily available in quantity. So.....they're still bringng plenty money. The fact of how effective or not effective they are surely has no bearing on sales.
greg g
Great American auction fever, Barret Jackson syndrome, more money than brains, the gotta have it at any cost mentality, a percieved notion of rarity or exclusivity, the I can afford it and you can't lifestyle. Who knows why people will willingly overpayfor something, just cuz. but there are some there for about 100. T120
.. They are out there, reasonably priced.I bought mine from out of the back of a 1/2 ton truck. The fellow who had it was staying in the same motel as I was,he had already shopped the swap meet and I spotted it buried in amongst his other finds. It was rather beat up and he didn't want a lot.I brought home and cleaned it up. Saving it for when I head down south to visit the folks in desert country.. Edited February 9, 2011 by Ralph D25cpe

T120
I didn't know that. The cooler was in rather rough shape when I got it.Also didn't have a decal on it.When I fixed it up and painted it, I stuck the Firestone decal on it as it was one that was available
Frank Elder
So, why do swamp coolers cost $400 on E-bay? Because ebay is for people who are too busy or lazy to do the legwork and don't have anything to compare it to pricewise....ebay is handy at times but I would use it as my last resort. Rather stroll the yards, swaps or garage sales. Or one on one meet with the owner than bid at an auction.

T120
Ebay can be pricey on some items. One advantage of dealing directly rather than long distance is that you can inspect an item closely and there's no surprise as to condition. I've bought stuff on ebay, but I find more enjoyment buying stuff at swap meets. Depends how a person wants to spend their time I guess
