greg g Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Looks MOPAR, pic is labeled 1939. I'm guessing 2 or 3 years older, may also be an early deployment of the Secret Service walking protectio detail. Quote
Gary Manes Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 The Cadillac was the official limousine during his years. It is in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I saw it on a school trip in highschool. Quote
busycoupe Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 He used to personally own a 1936 Ford Phaeton. It used to be on display at the Larz Andersen Museum of Transportation in Brookline, MA. The museum had a shake-up about a dozen years ago, and I haven't seen the Ford since. I just found a picture of the car from the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. Quote
TJM70's_48 Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I think I saw his Ford at Hyde Park last year. Pretty nice ride. Quote
TodFitch Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Apparently FDR had a 1931 or 1932 Plymouth modified for hand controls prior to the Ford that still exists and is on display now. Quote
49roadster Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 The Presidential car from 1939 till Truman was the "Sunshine special". A 1939 Lincoln 4dr convertible. I don't know what he used from 1933 to 1939. The Sunshine special is displayed at the Henry Ford Museum. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I thought he rode Packards Quote
Alshere59 Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Here is an interesting bit from the web. Numerous sites back it up. Capone's car as the Presidential limo. http://history.verdeserve.com/president-roosevelt-used-to-ride-around-in-al-capones-limousine/ Quote
desoto1939 Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 According to the Plymoyth DeSoto book by Don Butler on page 45 there is a picture of FDR sitting in a Model PA Sport Pheaton. The car was specially equiped for him because of his polio. The car had special manual controls so he could drive it. He appearently got the car when he was governot of NY. The windshield folded and the top could be folded much lower and neater. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote

Jim Benjaminson Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Despite alot of research, it seems the Plymouth PA went by the wayside when FDR got the 38 Ford that still exists. One story told was some young boys got ahold of it and wrapped it around a tree. Don't know if there is any turth to the story but it makes for good telling......especially when there are only 5 or 6 PA Plymouth phaetons still known to exist today..... Quote
