Posters are suggesting Michael W learn about resizing photos for the forum — he's not the only one!

I've been wondering how to get photos to appear in-line with the text — mine always show up as thumbnails at the bottom of the post. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that, but sometimes it would be helpful to have them adjacent to the relevant text. How is this done?

Also been wondering how people even manage to post those huge photos in the first place — the Manage Attachment screen states the maximum permitted size for, say, a JPEG, is 122.1 KB. As such I've always shrunk my photos to under that limit (using the "Preview" app on my Mac). Just for fun, I tried attaching a 456K JPEG file to this post — it was accepted and shows up on the Manage Attachment screen as 119.7 KB. Perhaps the forum software shrinks it to fit and it will open up bigger for readers. We'll see in a moment...

Interesting...

the attachment opened up larger on the screen, which is good, and downloads as a 220KB file — half the original size uploaded but twice the supposed limit for attachment size.

if hosting off your computer the size to upload is limited and the image is a thumbnail..others post their image off an online host site and the size can vary depending on the host site and the bandwidth they extend to the customer..

most of these sites have a recommended bit size for forums and such..one should follow that format..often you will find a number of image tools and sizes and means to upload on your host image site..if not..under tools for their page you should find what you need to manage your pictures..

Thanks Tim, while it could be that pix posted from one's computer (as opposed to an on-line hosting service, which I have never used) invariably show up as thumbnails, in my recent experience, photos posted from one's computer are not particularly limited to file size...

The photo in my first post on this thread was from the desktop at 456K, and I have just attached a 792K file from the desktop to this post. This one shows up on the Manage Attachment screen as 127.6K

My mistake... the original picture posted, as download from the forum was 122K, as shown on the Manage Attachments screen, not 220K as I reported earlier. The second item posted downloaded at 128K, basically the same as shown on the Manage Attachments screen.

From this I deduce the Manage Attachments screen will perform at least limited downsizing of JPEG images to suit Forum requirements. That should save some time in the future.

Tim: sorry, I cannot Right Click, as these Mac mice have only one button. But when I click on the opened thumbnails, it opens the image in a new screen within my (Safari) browser. The first one opened a little larger, the second opened up same size.

The Mac uses a one-click or two-click sequence instead of the PC's right or left click operation, and there is a little 4-way scroll button that is handy to the index finger. And of course there are accessory Mac mice on the market that have left and right buttons for those who prefer that setup.

just for yuks, got to imageshack.com/us. It is a free service. It uses the same browse and up load function as the manage attachments process. then when the photo uploads, you can copy the direct link line to copy the url of the photo. Now in the header bar of the forums message box there is a yellow square with mountains and sun pictureinsertimage.gif utlizing that tool by pasting the copied information into the avaialble space allows you to put the image where ever the cursor is in the text box.

However, before you finish pasting the copied url you must remove the "http:// text from the url as it already exists in the tool.

If the line in the box looks like this (Http://Http://somethingtolookat.jpg)

you will get a red X so you want to use the preview post tool to check before you post till you get the hand of it.

Imageshack is a free on line hosting site that you can use without registering or creating an account unless you choose to. the image stays on their server for a year or more. So the link to the pic stays avtive long enough for the purpose of the forum.

Photobucket has a choice of sizes you can use.

I can't recall the size, but the one I use works good

for the forum. Oh, it's 600 x 450 pixels.

I also use Snapfish, and the pictures come out a bit larger.

This is a pic from the Bucket......entered by using the yellow

square with mountain at top of the post space. You copy and

paste the U R L.

Here is mine from Photobucket

How does it look?

Dave:D

Dave, that's a wonderful picture........:D

Tim.....Bucket now makes you first load your pictures to your personal

computer desktop. Then you can download (or is it upload) from

desktop to Bucket. Kind of a pain. I think the deal is supposed to

be that if Bucket ever crashes or goes out of business, you will still

have your pictures. When loading direct to Bucket, your pictures

were not saved anyplace else and would be lost. (Unless, of course,

you had gone to the trouble of placing them in a second location.)

That's probably clear as mud?????

My camera uses floppy discs. I upload my pictures directly to Photobucket from these discs. I do not have to save them anywhere in order to load them on Photobucket. Once loaded I can erase the disc and re-use it or I can save the pictures to another file on my puter if I want to save them.

Don, I guess the PhotoBucket site thinks the pics are on the computer

due to being on floppy disc. I thought those discs went out a few

years back along with disco music. :D

You just need to get digital, man.

Dave, it may look oK to you as you are viewing on the same computer

you set it up on.

But when you send it, the receiving computer gets a different thing.

Are you using the preview post feature below your reply space?

Yes, I did preview the post and it looked OK to me. But as you say, sometimes what people see on their computer is different. Nice to know that the pics show up the same for everyone.

Whats a floppy disk? Haha

I put all my pictures onto my PC and then upload to photobucket. Tim at the bottom you just click all to see them all. Bob I would think you can plug your camera into your PC and upload directly from the camera.
