Chester Brzostowski Posted October 27, 2010 Author Report Posted October 27, 2010 Tim, I go to the Sully car show here in Virginia. It is put together by the Modal A Ford Club based here in the Washington DC area. Every year there are about 300 to 400 cars that show up. Yes there are a lot of Modal A Fords but there are also cars and trucks of every description. If you wish to have your car judged for its class it can not have any modifications but that doesn’t stop the number of cars that show up and participate whether judged or not. The point is that everyone is welcomed. This is what I believe the POC is missing. That is, including everyone in a hobby that basically is great fun if you don’t take yourself or your opinion to seriously. After all it is a hobby not a religion and it is your car which needs to live up to your standards. Most POC members that I have come in contact with feel the same way. I am not sure what inhibits this groups management from lighten up a little. But I do believe that good change, is good but I also believe that there are some that feel this type of change would deface the founding tradition. Honestly they probably deep down don’t really believe this. They are just caught up in the rules of the organization. Kind-a like religion. Where only the saints are perfect and only because nobody caught them. Chet… Quote
JerseyHarold Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Everything evolves and the POC leadership should realize that the car hobby is doing it, too. An internet region would probably be very successful and draw a wide membership. Not to digress too much, but they should also lighten up on the whole originality thing. If you're a newcomer to the hobby and have a budget to consider, the truth is that these days it is nearly impossible to restore any car to an as-built condition without spending a fortune. Something else to consider is that the 'feeder stock' of original cars is dwindling rapidly, so even non-original preservation is a good thing compared to the crusher. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 One last comment and I think I have about expressed my total concerns here..but its is a known fact that you cannot have a creed, (doctrine if you will) and then have those who are not keeping the faith present. There should be no reason the POC could not extend it membership to modified class. They will not be in competetion with one another...each within their class...only in this will I see membership rise withing the orginazation. To say others can "show up" and as seen in the past forced to park so far away...is not open fellowship and will cause division. Further until the classes are established the comments of one group about another groups entry when on walkabout..well them could be fighting words..again, just recognize the car as a Plymouth...for it is just that...every other car I have owned and shown has had both stock and modified classes.unfortunately those who cannot see both in the same world are limited in vision and understanding and shut themselves away from knowledge. Captain Neon Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 At the risk of continuing the discussion of the POC needing a modified class, I think the Tall Pines Region has the right idea in hosting a non-judged touring event next fall. IMHO, the emphasis needs to get a way from shows, judging, and trophies. Quote

Captain Neon Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Yep. Unless I get fired and have to find a new job, I plan to be there. The wife is already annoyed that I have been putting more planning effort in to going to Rochester MN over Labour Day weekend than getting ready for my parents' visit @ Thanksgiving. Quote

The wife is already annoyed that I have been putting more planning effort in to going to Rochester MN over Labour Day weekend than getting ready for my parents' visit @ Thanksgiving. Please note my new location of Topeka KS. I lost my job in November, but found a better one in Topeka KS. I don't actually start until 1/09/2011, but have found an apartment for the interim. My wife will be staying in Missouri until the house sells, or she finds a full-time job in Topeka. Any one planning on stopping in Trenton MO on their way to Rochester MN for Labour Day weekend is still welcome to do so, but I, unfortunately, will not be able to lead the convoy. I, also, will be unable to attend. New job = no vacation. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Congratulations on finding a better job. Glad to hear it. Jim Yergin Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Ben - congrats on the new job. Sorry to hear you're moving from the "show me" state to the "sunflower" state (at least I think that's their slogan). Sounds like you got that "new" PT Cruiser at the right time for traveling. Quote
desoto1939 Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 I am not a Plymouth owner. I have a 39 Desoto and I am a member of the P15D25 Forum. I do contribute to the forum. Since there are very few Desoto clubs and also Mopar clubs that are active I need a club or organization that want to drive their car and not just show up at cruise nights. I have been seeing over the past 5 years that most of the local clubs are getting older and that the members are getting older. The younger guys are not interested in the older car clubs. They are interested in the cruise nights only. There are several AACA clubs in my area but they are not active. There is a Mopar club in my area but no activity either. They hobby is having issues as a whole. People do not want to step up and do things in the clubs. I am a lone wolf in the hobby. THere are plenty of Model A clubs, Chevy clubs Ford Clubs but not many Desoto clubs. This marque has also been lost in the shuffle. There is the POC local chapters but the Desoto is a step child and is not a recognised car to be in the POC even thought it is o fhte MOPar family. If given the opportunity I would jointhe web POC. I feel there needs to be room for the pureists in the POC and also the modified members in a club and there needs to be classification even at the National Meets. We did this with the National Desoto Club. The guys that are changing the performace of the car and also making it better should be recogized for what they are accomplishing. If we never had someone trying to make something better then we would all be still driving Model Ts with gas lights and cranking the engine to start them every day. I am all for the Web POC even thought I have a Desoto. Rich Hartung Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 in the not so distant past, crotchity old codger did not make new blood feel welcome on the POC..of course it is their turf.....so they will more than not fade away in the not to distant future unless a few changes are made and attitudes get checked at the door.. suntennis Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 For Desoto1939, have you looked into the Walter P Chrysler club which works with all Mopars? Quote

Rich Hartung The Ypsilanti Orpan Car show now accepts Plymouths and of course DeSoto as well. I believe that ALL orphans accepted. Did not make it to the last one (rained out first time) but I will plan on attending hopefully in 2011. http://www.motortrend.com/auto_shows/112_0806_ypsilanti_orphan_car_show/index.html Quote

SKIPPER1 Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 I think a P.O.C. is a great idea. I would love to see one here in the Denver Metro area, So "Betsy" and I would have a place to go and 'show-off' (my car that is!). By the way--- Wishing all of you Mopar owners, and others too- A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. ROY SIZEMORE Quote
blucarsdn Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 (edited) I have been a member of the POC since '96, that being the year I found my '39 Plym conv cpe. I have been very active on the POC online bulletin for over ten years, receiving a lot of help from the contributors to that forum in spite of my open admissions that I was modifying my car extensively... Jim B. really took me to task for wood graining the dash...."no wood graining in Plymouth convertibles" of course he then added, "it was my car so I could do with it what I wanted". The first POC region meet I attended with my Plym, the other attendee's looked at me like I was from Mars... Since '39 Plym conv cpe's are so rare, a couple of guys walked over to my car, looking it over. In short order they called to the other guys to come look at my car. With few exceptions I have met with few objections to my car being at POC meets. I to live in an area that is not well represented in the POC, this in spite of the good job that the Gold Coast Region does to the north and south of me. I find some merit with an online POC region, however, I tend to think that the POC Bulletin fills that bill now....Bill Edited December 24, 2010 by blucarsdn Quote
1940plymouth Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 Bill, I have followed you on the POC with the '39 for along time. I think the car is great, but could you please post some more photos. Thanks, Bob Quote
