MarcDeSoto
When you are restoring a car, I guess about everyone would rather work on the underside with the car on a lift instead of rolling around on a creeper on your back. My question is "Is it practical to put a hobby sized lift in a garage?" Has anyone tried it and what are your opinions?
Plymouthy Adams
I have had mine for years now...it is the single best improvement to my shop...I have a bay that is 13' ceiling..I can even run the family minivan to the top without a problem..mechanical, body work, right down to getting is just the right height to lean into the car to do the electrical upgrades..if you have the room for a lift...I do not think you will be disappointed. 1942cowdodge
Well I got a good floor jack but that's about it. Must be nice to have the ability to just run your car into hoist and then just push a button and up and away!!!!! I tried many years ago to get a building permit to build a nice garage but the county wanted to check my drain field because it had to be up to there standards befor they would allow me to build a nice garage. Go figure I just gave up and built a nice car port with sides. Oh well maybe someday I will have a nice clean garage but for now its just a nice clean floor and good lighting that I have. MarcDeSoto
Thanks Tim and Mr. Dodge! Both of you have great looking work areas. I realized after looking at my garage that I can't put a lift in there. It has a second story above so the ceiling is too low. I remember years ago seeing a transmission mechanic lift my car in his alley by wheeling out a portable lift. I believe he put one lift on each bumper and lifted the car that way! Thanks. BobT-47P15
Who'd of thoght that 46--48 Chevy tail lights would become popular as hotrod/custom lenses. My first car was a 47 Fleetline 2 door fastback bought for $115 by my grandfather as a gift- for my first car. I tried to figure out how to replace those lenses with 58 Ford individual lenses. Ah, well...... Looking good, Tim.

Troganin
Wow, here i am working in a small 2 car garage with a car jack and blocks of wood. Apparently I'm doing it wrong. Everone has some very nice setups.
Reg Evans
I've added on to my original 3 car garage built in 1998 3 more times. The last addition included a 20 x 24 bay with a car lift. It sure makes things easier !
P-12 Tommy
Boy... that's what I need. I'm gettin' too old for that "on my back" crap! Tom
Reg Evans
Just a warning. Don't wear a ball cap while you're walking around under the car. Seems like I'm always banging my head on something the brim has hidden from view. OUCH !!!
Plymouthy Adams
I have that problem and I don't even wear a cap...I blame it on the bi-focals

rockable
I put in a two post lift from Eagle Equipment last December...........and it is the single best thing I ever did for my back and shoulder. I'm just getting too old for the creeper/jackstand thing, even though I've done it for decades. A lift is a wonderful thing and they are pretty darned reasonably priced these days. I think you can buy the Eagle lift I have for less than $1500 less shipping. It is a well built unit, despite the fact that it comes from China. Don Coatney
As Tim Adams posted I have used the lift in his garage. I wish I had one too. Click on the picture below.
dezeldoc
Yea but that shop bay has the BEST ventilation. Except when it is 106 outside!!

An outdoor installation is ideal for steam cleaning or sand blasting the undercarriage. I wish I had sloped my garage floor to a floor drain. 48Dodger
My lift has the wheel option, so I can move it around the shop, and outside. I actually used it to hang the lights in the shop. I put boards and plywood across the ramps and had the kids lift me up and down. Don, the engine has great tone! Sounds fast. 48D

I tell you what, since my neighbor cut down his tree i have no shade at all back there now. sand blasting out there now is out of the question as i moved it to the other side of the shop, and right next to that is my money pit (in-ground pool)!! One of these days when the wife is away on a business trip, i think i am going to drain it and punch some holes in the bottom and backfill it and put an extension on the shop, much more usefull and cheaper!
