Hi,

winter is around and therefore enough time to fine-tune ones car.

Looking at the hood ornament itself I was contemplating if the "cross stripes" (the picture is trying to indicate what I am referring to) were originally painted in red. Have checked all ad prints that I was able to get hold off and I am still not sure about it.

Colourwise (having checked the various threads) the recommendation seems to be funneling down to the testor colour "chrysler engine red". !!!

Thanks/ Thom

According to section M. of the POC guide the conclusion is that the indent on the hood ornament should be painted red..

And I would use them as "the final authority", however, this picture shows none...

The POC is the same bunch that doesn't know the difference between Deluxe and Special Deluxe dashboards and interior trim. The majority I have seen have no paint of eviedence of it.

yes..I see your question now..there is an optional lighting kit for these...most were wired to come on with the parking light, first stage of the headlight switch...others have wired theirs as an optional high beam indicator which is a simple task to tap the power from the dimmer switch to the lamp..some have different colored lamps to accent the color of their car bodies..

it is something you could easily make yourself...not real big deal..I have mine boxed away else I would try to send you a photo...I do believe a search on this site will find a picture of the original plus a few innovative one-of by some of the members here to get you on the right track..to aid your search, look for the threadds that display the paper clip...these will be the ones with pictures..

Hope your picture was not promoted by the POC. Some of the hood ornaments are mis-identified!

...I can assure you that the hood ornament originally had NO paint on it whatsoever. If you like the look of red paint, go ahead, but if you're trying to get it back to original, it should be left unpainted. There are several errors in the POC judging guide regarding P15s. As mentioned in a previous post, the are not aware of the change in the door panel from 1946 to 47 as well as other errors. I appreciate their efforts for originalilty. That's what they're about and they make no appologies for it. I like P15s and old cars in general in just about any configuration that shows some level of good taste. Best of luck with yours!

Annie, the hood ornement can be lighted invarious ways. I found that the plastic bulb socket for a early 90's GM sidemarker light squeezes into the plastic part of the ornementand stays there. I am using the 12v bulb on 6 v which gives it an amgerglow rather than a bright white light. I have mine powered from the ignition side of the coil, so it is on with the engine running. White lamps are available as well, and probably other colors in the rice rocket aisle.

I put a small alligator clip on the power wire to my hood ornament light. Therefore,

I can connect it to the headlight post on the left inner panel - to come on with my

headlights (either high or low beam) or the parking lights. I just clip it to what I want

at the moment.....works fine. The ornament is grounded to the car body, so you only

need one wire of any length.

As far as what light setting you hook to.....I would suggest the low beams as those are

used most.

No red paint on the hood ornaments originally....but suit yourself.

They did sell aftermarket and dealer installed light kits for the hood

ornaments back in the day. But as Greg pointed out, you can use

other things. The base just needs to fit inside the clear part of the

ornament.

Kyle your signature works just fine. You probably need to go into your user CP and find the check box for display signatures.

Hi - thanks: I shall not indulge in a spledge of additional paint on the hood ornament. After all I want to keep the look as original as possible.

Also great to have received the overview picture of some period ornaments. Really cool.

By the way: I attached the hood ornament lighting to my gauge dim switch.

Nope, I don't remember where it came from but there used to be a webpage that had different hood ornaments. Maybe they sold them, I don't remember, but I don't think they were there the last time I looked them up.

Here was a picture of earlier Plymouth hood ornaments...

The other places for red on a P15.....

I would think the color you mention is probably OK.....just needs a pretty bright, sort of fire engine red.
