Don Jordan Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 I had never thought about this before but I'm a little nervous now. I just had my car upholstered and now I'm worrying about 'things' taking up residence. It's not like it's a daily driver and after a few weeks in the garage I don't know what could get in. When I bought the car it had been in the desert for many years and there was rat poop all over. And I have another car sitting outside. It's going to be a while until I get to it and now it's on my mind. Any ideas? I don't know how they get it but I know they do. Quote
rolliejoe Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 cats are literally killing machines. Quote
dezeldoc Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Don, make sure it is sealed up good, no open holes in the floorboards, firewall, trunk or whereever no matter how small that will keep the rodants out, spiders and such are another deal. i have not had any mice or rats in any of my cars that were sealed up, but they will get up on the motor. oldmopar Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 As dezeldoc said plug up any holes which is a good thing to do in any case. I also use a tray or 2 poison so if anything gets in it will be taken care of. Quote
PatS.... Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 As dezeldoc said plug up any holes which is a good thing to do in any case. I also use a tray or 2 poison so if anything gets in it will be taken care of. The downside of poison is that if they get into an inaccessible area like the headliner and DIE there you have a big problem. Best to do all you can to keep 'em out in the first place. Quote
RobertKB Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Irish Spring soap (Original) has always worked well for me and is easy to remove from the car at any time. I actually like the smell but the mice do not. When I feel the bar is getting a little old, I demote it to the shower and put a new one in the car(s). Quote
radioguy7 Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Get a few cats, in my experience where there are cats you won't find rodents. The rodents have a keen sense for danger and seem to avoid an area if they know a cat is on the prowl. Quote
radioguy7 Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Decon kills them yes, but they still smell pretty darn funky after they sit around and rott. I would rather just use somethingt to keep them away in the first place. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 As for Irish Spring? Tried that too. If anyone really believes it works' date=' think again, you're fooling yourself. I have a small piece that use to be in a corner of the garage. Has mice tooth marks all over it.[/quote'] I put Irish Spring in my cars and haven't seen any signs of mice so I told a budy about it & he put some in his cars and the mice ate it. So I now I also have Decon around the garage. Dennis:eek: Quote
greg g Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 some folks have said that dryer fabric sofenter sheets tucked in and around teh trunk and interior will keep mice out. Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Hey...... at least the pee and poo will smell as fresh as Springtime in Ireland. Quote
RobertKB Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 As stated, I have always had good luck with Irish Spring but I also keep mousetraps in the garage and do catch mice with them. My old '78 GMC motorhome sits out in the country all winter with Irish Spring in it and I have never had a problem with it either. I guess it is whatever works for you. Quote
dezeldoc Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Mouse trap with peanut butter gets them everytime! cats don't do a dang thing, got 2 of them and they watch them walk right by, gophers to! Quote

Frank Elder Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Time for somebody to post the bucket trap:D:D:D:D Quote
Vazlov1949 Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Pretty impossible to find every point of entry in a car that's outside but inside place some rat poison outside of but near the car behind something that cats can't get to. Like a cabinet or boxes etc. I've heard that the poison actually attracts the varmints so wherever you put it that's were they will go. So if you put the poison inside the car that's where they will be. I've used various electronic repellents too but I'm not convinced they work. They send out a sound wave that is supposed be repulsive to them. I keep my parts truck in my barn with rat bait in all 4 corners of the building. I rely on my cats that sleep in the garage to keep the critters out of my driver. Quote

RHDSP15C Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Cats and cars are not a good mix. They have a habit of warming their bodies on the engine hood and then peeing in the cowl vent. It takes a long time to get rid of that smell. Quote
wilmot andy Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I put dryer sheets in our camper, no signs of mice. Two days ago I rolled out the dodge to clear some room for painting, and found mice took up residence in the rocker panel and in the frame. When I did the Dakota subframe, I found the frame was packed solid with Nebraska dirt and mouse nesting. Cant seal up all the holes in the frame. Quote
maurice wade Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I don't know which is the lesser of the to evils, mice in your car, or a cat on top of it. I have to keep a cover on my car 100% of the time. Those cat claw marks are hard to buff out. Quote

Next time use the cat dipped in buffing compound to remove the cat claw marks...do use a good respirator as swirling him back and forth may induce vomit from the cat...by golly that ought to cover both problems at once.. (PS..do this inside the garage with door down less noisy neighbors call ASCPA) Quote
Don Jordan Posted July 11, 2009 Author Report Posted July 11, 2009 My wife has two cats but they wouldn't eat anything unless it was grilled to perfection. The dogs just chase rabbits. I think I'll wrap some Irish Spring in Downey with a little peanut butter. A little off topic. I used to have a collection of newspapers going back to 1915. Mice got in my sealed up shed and chewed them all to pieces. I had a history book from 1888. It was about 4" thick. They burrowed into the book and hollowed out the center. Great nest. We had some bird food in a plastic drum. They chewed through the bottom. They are industrious. Quote
RobertKB Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Speaking of off topic........"I hates meeses to pieces." Where did that come from? Tom and Jerry? Quote
