Don Coatney Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 you may as well just kill yourself now and get it over with for after eating a chili slaw dog you will want to kick you own butt for not having discovered this treat much earlier in life.. Anything that has slaw in the recipe is out for me. I like dogs. And I like chili (without onions). But slaw is something I dont eat along with anything that has onions in it. Salt potatoes were first invented/discovered by salt miners. Salt mine operations in the great lakes area used hot water to liquify the salt making a hot brine. One day some salt mine worker tossed a few potatoes into the hot brine. In a short time they were ready to eat. Now they are sold in stores in Upstate, NY. Red skinned potatoes with a packet of salt. Boil water and add the salt and potatoes. They taste great! Quote
Frank Elder Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 (edited) Boil up your favorite brand of dogs so they plump...you brown them on the grill next..or not, as you prefer. Insert tab A"dog" into slot B "bun", then slather with ice cold coleslaw BAM bite into and enjoy the mixed sensation of cold and hot with two tastes that go together extremely well:D:D:D. I have never had them with chili...but am willing to try, seeings that it is a food group all on it's own! Edited June 14, 2009 by FRANKIE47 Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Chili slaw dogs kind'a sounds like a variation on Po' Boy sandwiches. Replace the barbecue pork with a hotdog and chili. I recommend Wolf Chili Randy, something to consider for your roach coach! Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 For anyone coming in for this meet... If you need any assistance on your way into town, or while in town, give me a call. As I've stated, I live less than 20 miles from the meet location and I know the area fairly well. I also have plenty of tools in the unlikely event of a break down. And I may even be able to round up a trailer if needed. If you see a green and black 1950 Dodge truck in the lot, then I'm hangin' around somewhere. Look me up, I'd love to make your acquaintance. greg g Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 It wasn't the salt miners in these parts, as the salt wasn't mined. Vertical shafts were drilled into the formations, water was pumped into the holes, then the disolved brine was pumped up and pipes to the evaporation area. When at the evaporation area, the brine was allowed to partially evaporate naturally, then the slurry was moved to the boilers where final evapoation was forced by heat. It was there that the workers, tied their culled potatoes into chees cloth bags and tosed them into the brine. The concentration of the brine was much higher the the 1 puond of salt per gallon. likely 4 times that. The Solvay Process (one of Syracuse's early industries) used concentrated brine for the process. My father and uncle used to go to the factory and get the brine solution in buckets and use it for salters during cookouts and family reunions. the resulting potatoes had a crust of salt on their skins when done. Plymouthy Adams Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 there in lies the problem with your cole slaw Don..Onions..never but never put an onion in cole slaw..that is about as bad as putting a SBC in a Mopar....eck! its is bad enough folks like to put shredded carrot in there..another yuk.... eric wissing Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Well, we sure have a picky crowd . . . "No onions, too messy, no carrots!!" No wonder we can't get along. Food is pretty personal. Me, kraut , slaw or onions. Chili, sure. The only big no no is ketsup. Dogs is mustard food. Greg's potato and salt story is great. I'd recomend Mark Kurlansky's books, "Salt" or even "Cod" great reads. While you're at it pick up "Potato, How the humble spud rescued the Western World" by Larry Zuckerman. Good eating to all. and remember suffering for and from food is American. Eric Quote
daddyo23 Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 When it comes to potato's I guess my favorite would be "Garlic" mashed potato's. I like your thinking.... Quote

adam_knox Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 Swung by the hotel parking lot last night. Wow! They had some beauties! Probably about 20 cars there yesterday evening. Nothing from the second series 1949...Hopefully some of those show up (they're my favorite model year). We've decided the 36 models are officially on the keep-dreaming-Christmas-wish-list. Quote

Niel Hoback Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 I respectfully disagree with those people. Every thread is entertainment for me, I read everything, no matter what. It's all good to me. Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 I'd be interested in knowing what they were protesting in front of the McDonald's before the signs were Photoshopped. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 They were probably protesting the food! I have a copy of Song of the South. Where will this thread go next? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 Sorry we missed you Adam. I was there Wednesday evening too. I ended up going to dinner with Young Ed and his clan. I also went back yesterday and rode along with Ed and his Lady in his coupe to a couple of nice museums. I had a great time hanging out with Ed, Carmin, and the rest of the group. I'm gonna stay home today but I plan to be back there on Saturday for the "show". Sorry Greg. I was looking through my pictures from yesterday and I didn't get any pictures other than from the museums. I guess I didn't get it out while at the Olympia. Merle Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 Well, the rain finally went away and it was a beautiful day for a car show. I had a good time hanging out with Ed and his family again. I also had nice chats with Bill (claybill) and Ken Bartz. I also had a chance to meet John S (JohnS48plm). He even had a correct wiper switch knob, that I needed, in his swap meet stuff. Thanks again John. Also met Wayne (daddyo23) and his yellow P15 as well as the VanBuskirk's and their beautiful wagon. Here's a couple of my favorites. And a link to more. http://s66.photobucket.com/albums/h254/mac2026/POC%20Oconomowoc/ Merle Quote
