Chrysler and Italian automaker Fiat on Wednesday officially signed a strategic alliance brokered by the U.S. government, after the Supreme Court cleared the path for the deal late Tuesday.

Fiat will initially take a 20% stake in the company, which can go up to 35% if it reaches certain goals.

Now mayby we can get Dodge to bring back the Fiat Topolino and put a Hemi in it.:D

I hope they don't get rid of the Challenger, Charger & 300...that would put put me out of work for sure, we make the dash for them and have only worked about 8 weeks since Christmas. right now they are talking about us going back on the 22nd of June but it all hinged on Fiat.

Chrysler failed to be competitive in the nonsense department..who in hang can take a 4 door hemi seriously...not I..may be a runner but two too many doors...people don't want that..the Challanger is way overpriced for the market..they had an opportunity to flood the market and sell these like hotdogs similar to the introdcution of the first Mustang..dime store 2 door car with a full line of engines available and trim..them things are still falling out of the trees..288,000 first year...instead they hold the sales to a few limited production number and hold out for the elite momma's money boys to buy..matter of fact the few folks I have seen driving them are my are or older reliving the 60/70 era and has empty nest syndrome and money to burn..

The challenger is now available with a v6 and a non hemi v8. I think if they had done that right away and gotten them available people would have bought a ton. Norm I thought it was the K car and then the K car based minivan that brought them out last time.

Ed' date='

It was first the Horizon. That was the first front wheel drive car for Chrysler back then and they really took off like hotcakes. Then Chrysler changed over to all front wheel drive cars with the K-Cars, which kept them going strong and also made the other auto companies follow suit to stay competitive.[/quote']

As a vote of confidence in Chrysler I bought a Plymouth TC3/Tursimo (two door sport version of the Omni/Horizon) back in that era. Had I put the money in Chrysler stock instead and sold the stock about 3 or so years later I would have been far enough ahead to buy a car with cash and have more than my original investment back. But I was dumb and bought the car instead.

This time they are on their own as my current cars are running great and I haven't seen a new car of any make that strikes my fancy.

Spent yesterday making 2 trips 140 miles each way, to pick up the inventory from a closing Dodge dealer near Albany. First trip we grabbed 4 vans and 2 Calibers, one R/T and one stripper. Next trip we grbbed a Dakota extra cab, and Avenger and I got to drive an unusual Ram 1500. Stripper, With the Big Hemi, no 4X4, no strip Dog dish hubcaps on steel wheels. It one option other then the drive train was cruise control and the sirrius radio.

I figured like Hemi trucks of the past couple of years it would suck gas like a true frien of OPEC, most I have driven over the past couple years have been getting around 14 mpg or less on my ferry trips.

As such I put 25 Dollars worth in 9.3 gallons to cover the 140 miles the fuel lamp was lite, but I fugured I would have some insurance left in the tak at the end of the trip.

Well the thing went like a raped ape, 60 to 80 about as long as it takes to say it, new rear suspension is a big improvement over last year, and nice quite 73 mph cruise on the highway. Big suprise was that there was just under 1/4 tank left when we ended the trip, so the variable cylinder shut off must work pretty well, ad I only felt it maybe once or twice as it shut down or refired cylinders. Guess if I were in the market for a full size truck it would need to be on the list for consideration.

also seems to me the Avengers get better mileage than the calibers. and the one I drove posted 29.2 on the computer.

Wonder what will happen with Jeep... I still want another one, but will have to wait till the Architecture market comes back before I sign up for a car payment. By then they will probably be feeling cocky again at the dealers, and unwilling to deal like they have been in the last five or six months.

Timing is everything...

I would thing Jeep is the cherry in the deal for Fiat. They have a big European dealer network, and I would think some of the Jeep Models would have a lot of buyers thee.

Don't think the Commander would be the one but the Wrangler and Liberty maybe the Patriot would sell well.

Or they can use the plateform/engineering to put 4wd under some of their stuff. Currently the only AWD thing they sell is a rebadged Suzuki S4. Sedici and might be an awd Panda also. But nothing eriously off road.

Most definitely, I doubt they have any real big plans for the rest of Chrysler. They might rebadge one of their euro econoboxes as a Chrysler or Dodge and see how it goes. But why would anyone waste time with them when for probably similar money you can get a small Toyota or Honda vehicle with proven reliability. The rest of Chryslers line will not meet the new cafe standards and with no more money from the government to do R and D, I doubt they stand much of a chance. Besides a "controlled" bankruptcy probably allowed most of their UAW contracts to remain intact and its those liabilities that keep them from making profit especially on smaller low buck cars.
