I just wanted to re-visit this thread. I ordered this today Exactly what I was hoping for, somebody out of their shop making a quality condenser. Not exactly cheap but if you going through 4 or 5 to find one that works, then you carry 2 spares just in case the cheap China fails, And you hope you are not walking home ... you would actually save money by buying a good one in the first place ... only 4 years old but claims no failures yet. -
Yeah he actually came by today. While he has good intentions for all, he not thinking it through. I saw him out on the road, wife was parked 2 houses down and he was looking. I showed him the neighbors and who to talk to. He offered to buy me a new $12 mail box ... I have 9 stick on letters on each side for address @ $1.35 each ... I told him I would fix what I had. He gave the neighbor a new box & a piece of rusted out pipe less then 3' long for a post. You have to bury the pipe in the ground, you need at least 5' Just worthless junk. You are correct @Dan Hiebert I find myself attracted to the gentleman. He has a interesting history and speaks a colorful language. I enjoy talking to him and look forward to talking again. If he had a son or daughter over there talking him out of it ... I would not even consider getting involved. He appears to have no close family to help. If he runs off the road and kills his wife and self, good luck to them on their new adventure. If he hits a school bus and kills children, I know what I know and never even try to intervene ... I would spend the rest of my life thinking I coulda, shoulda, woulda. I expect my success rate to be close to zero. I will have to become a friend and then gain their trust ... Things happen for a reason.

You are 100% fine. Last set of bias ply tire I ran, was on a 1967 Datsun pickup ... I was a tire retreader and found the perfect carcass to retread and use ... This was in the 1980's ... I just laughed how they got flat spots while sitting over night. It was a 2 mile trip to the highway, and was a womp womp womp while getting there, then they warmed up and became round again. Then they actually ran pretty decent. Thats what bias ply tires do. When you have old bias ply tires, while they look good, the rubber gets hard. If your tires are 10 years old, they need to be replaced ... Rubber deteriorate as it ages, it gets harder and never softens up. There is a date code stamped on them you can look up the age of your tires. My neighbor has a 54 ford, all original except a roller 302 and a AOD, has wide white bias tires on it. nice car to drive at local parades, but the tires suck so he does not drive it. Now it has been sitting 2 years and fuel system needs to be cleaned because he wont drive it. All because of the old hard bias ply tires. I am just saying, if you are adding 1 psi air pressure here, moving 1/16" alignment there ... you are still chasing ghost. Was not til the later 50's when they started building decent roads ... Otherwise was all dirt & gravel roads. For a driver, put some radial tires on it, for a show put the old bias tires on it. -
You see where I am going? The man has already wiped out 3 yards and mail boxes, A fedx truck and freaked out when his wife had a scraped elbow. I guess I will go down and mow his grass tomorrow, I already know he will fight me .. and just do it without knocking on door or asking. Maybe we determine who is more stubborn. Thanks @plaming I think that is good advice .... You see where I am going, when his wife had a scraped elbow and bleeding, he was totally confused and was trying to park the motorhome at my house ... while he lived 4 blocks down the road. I only want to meet him and help him, I have no ways I want to hurt him or cause issues.
-
But you understand more then any of us ... I know you are over 80 years old .... would you want a driver on the road that does not know what county or road they are in? @pflaming you are probably the best person to talk to ... how would you like to be talked to from a stranger and told you cant drive? I just have no idea how to approach this guy suspect I will try to mow his grass and make friends with him ... @plaming how would you deal with a 80 year old that should not drive?
-
Yeah I dunno, I am the guy that does not like people ... I want no friends, I send people to the curb ... He just is a Veteran, patriot that files his American flag. I guess you actually need family or someone to discuss this. While I am not looking for a friend I see nobody stepping to the plate. See what happens.

I told the female officer today as she returned and told me what happened and why ... I apologized to her for the upcoming events of him driving. She laughed. FWIW, I just found a cool old man that lives down the street, He will bitch and complain and I will try to help him every chance I can. He will bitch about mowing his front yard ... if he allows me to look at his riding mower, maybe I can fix it. I suspect after meeting today, he will complain but let me continue. How do you tell them they need to stop driving? Just because they can, does not mean they should. Will be a interesting transition .... lets see if he shoots me tomorrow for mowing his grass.

Old people are weird and know everything, stuck in their ways. And I get it. Mind is sharp, but physically just not up to par. Your mind thinks you can ... but you really can't or should not. Had a interesting incident today, A 30' motorhome drives slowly past my house ... then I hear a sound of destruction ... I go out and look, He is backing up and just ran over the neighbors mail box. He continues to back up and runs into some rail road ties used for landscaping in my other neighbors yard, then he pulls forward and hits my mail box. Then he drives off and goes around the block. Then he turns the other direction and goes around the other block. And drives by a 3rd time. The front door is wide open and swinging in the breeze. I write down lic# and call police. Gentleman is 84 years old, been working on this motorhome for last couple months, so far had EMS come and extract him from it as he got stuck. He has a accident report where he side swiped a fedx truck that was parked, today he went down and got the inspection and license plates He is ready for a road trip now. ... Sad part is, his 80 year old wife was out walking and fell. She called him, he picked her up in the motorhome She was bleeding from her elbow and needed medical attention and he thought my house was his house, He lives 4 blocks down the street. He was flustered and confused. What do you do? ... I went down and talked to him today ... Asked if his wife was good, she was out shopping. Really is a nice guy, retired military and been everywhere. Motorhome and travel is on their bucket list. I gave him my phone # and asked him to call me if he needed anything ... His riding mower is broke, paid someone to fix it and still broke, grass needs cut ... think tomorrow will go down and cut it for him. While I should be pissed at him for the damage he did in 3 yards, I just want to help him and try to talk him out of driving this 30' motorhome.

I just wanted to add one more thing before I back out of this conversation. I understand the purist and reasons why to run bias ply tires on these cars. I think the alignment settings are different between a bias and radial tire. I would check that. Use your mind and your own critical thinking about this issue .... I am just saying, during the day in the 60's-70's and tires were moving from bias to radial. I bet your mother or your grandmother, depending on your age ... drove a similar car as yours with radial tires on it. Honest it wont blow up. -

On my daily driver, when I bought it I put new tires on it ... expecting a road trip and wanted extra load (6 ply) for a future road trip with a trailer. While the tires on my daily driver looked good, they were old and have some cracking in the side walls ... And my project truck had tires that would not hold air \o/ Thinking to myself, if I had a jeep wagoneer, I would like to have a decent set of all season tires on it. I tried running studded snow tires in the past, they work ok ... I found that sipping the tread (thin slices in the tread) I got much better control on ice. This is also what semi trucks do, get the tires sipped and they have better control, when required or needed they will chain up .... they do not run studded winter tires. A good quality all season radial, it will have the sipping built into it. You can look at them and see it. The foot print of the tire, as it contacts the ground, flexes. If you get on a road covered with water, they will help prevent hydroplaning. The tread flexes and the water has a evacuation route to keep full contact with the pavement. Same with ice, pulling up to a stop sign when road is a sheet of ice, the tires flex and grab the ice better then studded snow tires. When I lived in Spokane WA and 72" snow fall and I worked for a tire company, I had a chance to experiment with tires and sipping is the best in my opinion. All season you run year around and no need to change. Just saying, put good tires on your daily driver, move your existing tires to the hobby car, add some port a walls to them call it a day. https://www.amazon.com/White-Tire-Wall-Portawall-Insert/dp/B07SSPFLYR/ref=pd_lpo_263_img_0/147-1999544-1403667?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07SSPFLYR&pd_rd_r=c0282404-3353-4a6c-a87f-0cb5edcfb10b&pd_rd_w=qyiZg&pd_rd_wg=XQbf9&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=WPDMYEREYGW15647ERTN&psc=1&refRID=WPDMYEREYGW15647ERTN -

I should add, if you put 2 radials on the front, it should drive better ... Butt .... the 2 bias in the rear will still go all over the road and still drive funny, maybe just not as funny. -

Why I was saying borrow a set ... If you were anywhere near west Texas and stopped by, I could pull the set of radials off of my project truck in 10 min and we could put them on yours and go take it for a drive. Then you would have peace of mind and quit chasing ghost in the front end. Now your talking .... what bolt pattern are your jeep wheels ... pull all 4 off and try it -

Welcome to the forum and nice car .... I wonder if it could be the bias ply tires causing the wandering? They are known to follow every divot and line in the road. I wonder how well it would drive with a set of radials, maybe you have a set or can borrow some just for a test? -
Explorer or Ranger rear end swap on ‘48 Chrysler Windsor?
Los_Control replied to LrudyD's topic in P15-D24 Forum
One thing you do not mention, is your motor/trans. Are you running stock? 218 with manual 3 speed? or is it a bigger engine with a overdrive trans ... depends on what gear ratio you want to look for. I have read some users opinions, one person owned 2 different 218 flathead with T-5 trans, one had 3:55 gears and other 3:73 gears. The 3:55 cruised well on the freeway, but at a mild hill it was out of torque had to downshift to 4th all the time. While the 3:73 had plenty of torque and could pull same hill in 5th gear. See where I am going? Picking the right gear ratio for a enjoyable driving experience is important also. It depends on what you have. I have no idea, I know the 3/4 ton trucks have the 5 on 5 bolt pattern ... do the big Chrysler's have same? Are they the same axle width as the other cars and trucks? I dunno. A guy on Facebook I have been chatting with, just installed a rear end from a 90's chevy pickup 3:73 ratio, 5 on 5 bolt pattern and over all width is 1" wider then his stock 1949 3/4 ton truck. I always assumed the chevy was too wide, until I measured ... they are really close. I need a seat for my dodge and my chevy seat is 1" wider then the dodge. -
Also if you have any glass in full pieces, you can bring to local glass shop and they can use as a pattern and cut new for you. Or make a cardboard template and they can use that. ... Is just flat laminated safety glass. Not expensive. Some shops may offer to create the glass then send it off to be tempered for more safety. Cost a little more, might be a 2 week turn around ... is a option. I am sure ordering glass online works fine, I know some offer every piece in a package deal for a decent price, what if a piece breaks during shipping? Just seems like a potential can of worms, when you have the opportunity to support a local business.

Explorer or Ranger rear end swap on ‘48 Chrysler Windsor?
Los_Control replied to LrudyD's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Explorer is a common swap, newer ones 1996 or so and up have disk brakes. You do need to cut of the spring perches and weld new ones on where needed. Tractor supply sells spring perches that will work .... The explorer has several gear ratio options. Is a 8.8 and a very strong rear end. Has right bolt pattern. Also Jeep Cherokee is a common swap and same reasons as with the explorer. I measured a rear end from a late 80's Bronco II, Think is same platform as a ranger, at the time and it was a few inches narrower, would need wheel spacers, and a smaller weaker rear end ...Maybe newer ranger is different? One thing to keep in mind when doing the swap, when you grab the rear end from donor vehicle, grab all the emergency brake cables and brackets to go with rear end. Would be possible to add to your car and keep original E-brake handle, and adapt cable to use E-brakes from modern rear end. -
51 B3B build thread - after all these years
Los_Control replied to bkahler's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
I never thought of zirks as a problem. I had some bad ones and pulled one, took it to local Car Quest auto parts store, bought 10 of them. Then later went back and bought a couple with a 90 degree head on them. Simply a non issue I thought. -

Hrrrm I looked at it and completed the questions it was asking .... nothing important. Since then, I kinda feel the update went awry. The color is different, the response of switching pages is slow, Only way to describe it ... the site was much better before this update. I have been through many past updates ... this one is different. -
I just wanted to thank @P15-D24 for the extended update today .... I actually got some work done....

vulcanizing is a rubber process, do you mean apply the rubber material on top? Not familiar with these cars but have seen some that appear to have a rubber mat on them. Just seems like a whole different question then buying new running boards, so I may be wrong.

Seems that would be your answer, get them repaired and be better then any re-pops available.
