  1. Man, if all you guys do is worry about safety, why even drive these old heaps. One fender bender with a Prius can kill you with metal dashes, big ol' steering wheels and no seat belts or air bags. May as well stay home watching Matlock or Golden girls, it's much safer. To the original poster, good job on the visor. I personally don't like them but if you do, then rock on!
  2. I've done body and paint most of my life and have worked on some seriously hit vehicles. I'll just say this, it doesn't matter what you do with these old cars. When they get in any significant,(and not so significant), hit, the passengers usually don't fare well. If you're looking for safety, buy a modern car. If you're driving an old car, just enjoy it for what it is and accept the consequences if you get into a collision.
  3. Pack it with petroleum jelly and bolt it on. The new one that is. The old one was shot.
  4. Light it up or throw it on your weeds
  5. Why not just wire it to a 12 volt negative ground battery on its own? Easy enough to do.
  6. Just don't add hazards.
  7. Old Mopars really don't bring that much money. Everyone wants what everybody else has which is typically a Ford or Chevy. Doesn't hurt my feelings, I like buying them cheap. Funny you bring up the Airflow. I just today got offered the possible job of swapping motors in a 35 DeSoto Airflow.
  8. That's awesome, chuck an OD in it and maybe get it up to 50 MPH!!
  9. If it sat for a couple years, carb is probably crusty. Sounds like you part swapped everything and still have a problem......Pull the carb off and clean it. Even a good soaking and blowing out all of the passages will work. Soak it, sonic clean, whatever gets the job done. These things are so simple, even a caveman can tune one. Good luck.
  10. Pull all of the front sheet metal, stab the engine where it needs to be and build it around the engine. I'm mid build on a 49 Plymouth business coupe with a DeSoto hemi and 4 speed. Not too much rocket science, just patience, fabbing and gool ol hot rodding sense. Good luck.
  11. Cherokee, Ranger, Explorer.........
  12. Might be the angle of the picture, but looks closer to 003.
  13. I've installed a few Rusty Hope kits without issues. Scarebird is fine if you don't want to run your stock wheels. My personal dailies all have drums.
  14. Rusty Hope.
  15. I don't think anyone is trying to talk you out of buying the car. I definitely am not. If you want it bad enough, go for it. If you want to run the YF, make it happen. Nothing on these cars is rocket science. If it were me, I'd chuck a Ball and Ball on there and be done with it.
  16. Personally, I think almost 12k for a car that doesn't run right is too much. Even if it was right, 12 is high. I'd be doing some haggling. These old Mopars really aren't that desired by the masses of sheep that want what everyone else has If you're willing to pay up, more power to you but I don't think that car will be flying off of the shelf.
  17. Thanks for sharing those I'm currently swapping a 291 DeSoto hemi into my 49 Plymouth business coupe. It's had it's challenges but it will be worth it when I'm done. I've almost given up a few times. The biggest issue so far has been steering. It would kill me to.look under my car and see a rack and pinion but I may end up installing one to make it work. I have a few ideas on how to use the stock steering box or maybe a smaller manual box. If you want somebody enough, you'll make it happen. That's what I keep telling myself.
  18. I daily drive my 53 Plymouth. All original, 6 volt positive ground, points, generator. Fires right up within one revolution every day hot or cold. It has a Carter B and B. I don't see why you can't rebuild what you have instead of swapping a new carb on there. Mike's Carburetor Parts has some really nice kits. Also, I would look into possible ignition issues and tuning in general. Might be more than carburetion. Good luck and have fun with it.
  19. I get it, some people want a safety net. Why not ABS, airbags, seat belts, back up cameras lane shift warnings, and bells and buzzers? How about heated seats and mirrors? The question was about a stock type master, not suggestions about modernizing an older car. Me personally, I drive old cars because I like OLD cars. I like the way they brake, I like the way they steer, I just like everything about them. If you want safety, buy a Camry.
  20. All of my dailys have single masters. The newest being a 1959. Been up and down the coast, the hills and all through the valley without any problems., We'll over 10,000 miles annually. You'll be fine with the stock master. Good luck.
  21. Congratulations on getting it started. All of the headache and heartache is well worth it.
  22. I bought that cloth wire kit from Ton's for my 53 and it is worth every penny. Great kit, lots of colors to choose from.
  23. Definitely cut out the bad work and do it right. Move around while welding and do short sections at a time. That will help with warping. Use an air gun to help them cool in between welding and grinding. You can warp panels dressing welds as well. I've repaired quite a bit of oil canning with heat, a wet rag and hammer and dolly work. If you get some warpage, it can be fixed. Good luck and take your time.
  24. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow..... That's about as simple as it can be explained.
  25. Yeah, I'm talking if he's off just one tooth on the pump.
