  1. I have the glue ones on my 46 convert. I put them down with black silicone.. No problems with them.. I see Bernbaum has them now. I paid $300 a couple years ago. Look good.

How about a Plymouth 426 Hemi !!! LOL If I were to do over my installation of the 350 chevy Id put in rack and pinion steering. Get rid of that damn steering box and that would make the rest much easier. The 318 would fit easier too.

Whats going in Mattias ? Have you considered a later model six cylinder ? Like a Volvo ? The rearend spring and axle to axle width must be close.

Sounds like you are doing a different motor and transmission change. If not why do you want to change the rearend ? Yes Im planning on using the original springs so far.

Yes it is. I just picked a 1999 Explorer rearend with a 3.73 gear ratio and limited slip and disc brakes for $100...I suggest going with disc brakes though. You have to grind just a smidge off the calipers to use the 48 rims.
  6. Yes I had put on a new master cyl before.  I just brought home yesterday a 1999 Explorer 3.73 limited slip rearend and will work on getting that in when it warms up... I had been running the original one of 4.11.  We will see how the master cyl does when it has to work disc front and back both.  The car is modified so I can always put a new one on the firewall if I have too.   Dale

That's the way my 48 Ply coupe is. It has a Camaro frame clip,412 SBC,Turbo 350,and Camaro rear,so I can pretty much do anything to it I want without worry.

  7. If you decide to do brake work I suggest you do it right seeing the importance of stopping. I did the brakes and then redid them using Scarcrow disc brake kit on the front... The difference was dramatic. The old type master cyl worked great and no trouble bleeding them like with the old ones. Money well spent.
  8. WOW !!! Looks just like mine.. Same color, top, and little back window. Much nicer though.
  9. Nice find !! Wish I had the building its in...Andy Bernbaum has good door rubbers that glue on..
  10. I put Coker 670-15 narrow WW radials on my 46 ply and they are great. No balancing problems With the bias looking tread they do look like the originals. Doesnt seem to steer any harder.
  11. I checked on a 1947 ply trns I have and there is a 1 1/16 socket fitting where the cable attaches to the transmission. You can screw it out if it will come.. mine came out with a box wrench and the gear will come with..Bad news the gear is steel not plastic..Could also be the little square where the cable goes into the trns could be stripped.
  12. Dont know about Fatman but Scarebird front disc kits will clear the original rims on a 48 plymouth. Just installed them a couple months ago.
  13. I suppose these units come in different types and configurations. If you got a unit with the controler wouldnt it just be 12 volts to the controller. Probably not that simple. I see they do sell complete kits for things like dunbuggies but dont know how much power they have for using on a car. Ill put this idea on the list after I get the Explorer rearend in and have an emergency brake again. LOL
  14. Has anyone here ever considered installing electric power steering on these old MOPARS ? Wonder if the unit could be mounted on the inside of the firewall. The used unit is very cheap to buy. Im thinking of looking into the possibility.
  15. OK, thanks Wayfarer. Thats what I finally determined. I had the owner measure the tire centerlines too. Dont know where I got the wider dimensions. Bought a 1999 Explorer Sunday to be delivered in a week or two for a total of $300. Dont think thats too bad. Dont know the ratio but its out of a 4X4 with auto trns so that should be ok.. I read here somewhere the parking brake cable will work on a 46 Ply too. Hope so.. This site and the posters are just great...
  16. Will a rear end from a 1999 Ford Explorer fit a 1946 Plymouth without rubbing seeing it is 1 7/16 inch wider than the 1998 ? Want to be sure before I start this. I read here its OK with a 1950 model.
  17. In the first picture whats that think attached to the center housing ? Are the shocks going to hookup or is modification necessary ?
  18. Unscientific.....Shoot for perfect alignment and you will be off just about right.. LOL.
  19. My friends back in highschool that had 47 plymouths used Strombergs because they made the car faster.. FWIW
  20. Hoping someone here can help.. My Son-in-Laws 2013 GMC Arcadia wont move in forward or reverse. I see the trans shifts via electric solinoids and they are controlled by the computer Id think. Does the system have a fuse in it ? $4500 they want for a rebuild or replacement. Hard to trust anything a shop says. Thks.
  21. How much do you actually drive a car like an old Plymouth ? Who drives it enough to really care whether your getting 20 mpg or 25 mpg...The old 46-48 Plymouths got 20 mpg highway. When I was a teenager we increased mileage by 500% with a five gallon can and a hose.
  22. Nothing worst than cheap foreign tools...A mechanic is only as good as the tools he is using.
  23. That Chevy pickup is a classic too.
