  1. Atmosphere temperature change from cool to hot can make the gas tank have more pressure if the fuel cap is not vented on our old cars. I had a situation with and engine change from a diesel engine to a gas engine. My truck sitting in the driveway late one morning had gas coming out the carb, after the truck had been sitting in the morning sun. I opened the fuel cap, and the carb stopped leaking. I had to put a small hole in the fuel cap. The temperature rising made the fuel pressure rise.....
  2. This is true. I am using filtered rain water to mix with my antifreeze. My house water filters do not do a good job of filtering. I have to change or clean our shower heads very often, because of the contaminates that build up....
  3. Good idea to flush the cooling system, even you do not have any problems. I have been flushing my 38's cooling system every two weeks, with rain water. Tap water here is not very good. Ready for 50/50 now. I read the premixed 50/50 antifreeze do not use distilled water, but filtered tap water. There is an antifreeze company, "Evans", that does not use water at all, only coolant....
  4. After reading this thread, I checked my radiator cap by placing it on a scale and pushing down to see how much pressure it took to open up, 5 lb.... I took a 15lb cap from the shop and did the same, it took about 20lb of pressure to open.....
  5. Here in Virginia cow country, tap water, that comes from the river is not the greatest. Alot of stuff in in my house water filters, and hot water has the clorine smell. So I would rather use rain water in my cars...
  6. I have been hording the green stuff this summer. Quick as the cold weather hits, the price will go up, and up....
  7. That is not a dumb question, I am glad you ask, I had forgotten about that drain.
  8. Recently I drained the coolant out of my 38 Coupe. Coolant did not look very bad. I had the Coupe pointed downhill so the drain would be lower. Let the engine warm up to around 200 with a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator, before I opened the drain. I filtered plenty of rain water to pour in as it drained, and the engine still running. With this being cow country, tap water is not fit to drink, or put in a radiator. With the drain downhill, I did get a little rust & green color, and very soon coolant was clear. I will do this again soon before winter, and then fill with new 50/50.......
  9. I bought several C3 Fram filters at Tractor Supply for my 38 Coupe....
  10. I did some basic measurements. If I remove the clutch/fan, move my radiator forward, and use a push electric fan, I should have enough room to use the Jeep engine.
  11. Maybe I did not post the link correct. Here is a photo of the fuel tank I was trying to refer to.
  12. I bought a Jeep Cherokee XJ for a possible donor for my next project. The XJ has the 6 cylinder inline HO 190 Hp engine/auto trans, much more than my 80HP flathead.. This XJ has been rolled over, but I can still drive it around the property until I start taking it apart.
  13. There are 15 gallon, 25 x 18 x 10-7/8 fuel tanks on ebay for around $80.00 delivered. They are for the older Jeeps. www.ebay.com/itm/Gas-Fuel-Tank-15-Gallon-for-87-90-Jeep-Wrangler-/370857401
  14. Greg, my 56 engine also has the 6 bolt flywheel. My 56 had a standard 3 speed trans. I used the starter from the 56, in my 38 Coupe.
  15. Hey Falcon, found this info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_SHO_V6_engine on your engine, looks to be a 1989 to 1995, 220 bhp... 220 Hp is alot more than my 82HP......
  16. I just changed the oil in my Mom's Taurus. The 3.0 DOHC has 123,000 miles on it now. It has alot more power than any 3.0 or 4.0 Ranger I have ever driven. I wonder if a Ranger 3.0 automatic trans would fit to the DOHC? I really like my 5 speed in my Coupe but would like to go automatic with my next project, my 37.......
  17. Party line,,,,,one ring is for the Johnsons,,,,,,,two rings was for the Millers,,,,,,,,, threee rings was for the,,,,,,,,I forget....
  18. "Blog", or "Web Log",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,for us old timers, maybe it should be called a place to chew the fat, or a place to shoot the bull....
  19. I will be watching your project, for sure. What kind of Ford 5 speed will be used? I bought my Mom a 98 Taurus, 8 years ago, has the DOHC 3.0. My Mom is 87 next month, does not drive anymore. You think a 5 speed would bolt up to this engine?. I am thinking, my 37 Coupe body/ Ranger frame, engine-trans open for debate...
  20. I was doing some reading on 50/50 premix coolant, that the manufacture used filtered water with the mix, and did not recommend using distilled water. I have been flushing the cooling system of my newly acquired Cherokee with rain water the past few weeks. A few more flushes will be needed before adding coolant.
  21. When I was working on my 5 speed install, I noticed that of the several clutch disk I had, many where of different thickness, like you said, "too fat".....
  22. I saved this photo that was posted years ago..... Interesting headers.
  23. My best accomplishment on my $400 38 Coupe is adapting a TK5 Ranger 5 speed transmission to the flathead engine. The TK5 made the Coupe more of a pleasure to drive.
