  1. I'd rather have a low first gear, and an overdrive, than visa-versa. ken Ken, this is how my present setup is with my Ranger 5 speed/3.73 rear gear, 218 engine. My first gear is great on my steep driveway. Second is good for starting on level highway, and 5th is great for over 40mph. Virginia has a lot of up and down highways, so I have to shift to 4th often with only 80hp. Fun to drive, for sure.....
  2. Maybe a 5 speed transmission would do for the time being....
  3. This is the one from my 1956 engine...
  4. November 2013 was the last cruise-in of the year in our little town, and the first rod run for the club that does the cruise-in. 11 cars joined in and did our first rod run, which was a little over 100 miles. My little Coupe did great. Our cruise-ins start again in April, and I hope we many more rod runs. Bob
  5. I think for pulling power a 5 speed, (Ranger trans) would be a big improvement for you. My 38 has a stock 218, 5 speed Ranger trans, 3.73 rear, very good pulling power, and very driveable on the highway in 5th gear. I usually start out in 2nd gear, if on a level surface. I used a driveshaft from a Ford Explorer 2wd, short wheelbase, (2door Sport).....
  6. When I first got my 48 Dodge, it had 205/75-14 inch tires, 25 inch diameter, on the rear. The front had 195/65-14 inch, 23 inch diameter. With the original springs, my 48 sure sat lowwwwww......
  7. I made a plate to replace my mechanical pump, from 1/4 inch aluminum, works great. I installed my electric pump near the fuel tank. I read the electric is better at pushing fuel, than installing the pump near the front...
  8. I installed a 1995 Ranger rearend on my 38 Coupe. I used new spring perches from a trailer supply, Plymouth springs, and added, I believe 1 inch spacers to get a better width. Looks, and working good, 3.73 gear.
  9. I ran my little Ford Ranger around my property for over a year with no radiator. I just connected the lower radiator hose to the upper hose with some tubing, and watch the temp gauge, heater sure worked good. Engine too cold or too hot is not good..
  10. Today, I was reading an article in a magazine about a life-time oil filter bypass system. One only has to remove the filter and wash with gas, ever so often. The filter is a cone shaped bronze that fits in our canister type oil filter systems. The magazine was from October, 1954...... I have an old glass bowl fuel filter with a brass or bronze filter unit. It is many layers attached together....
  11. Your Challenger rear should be good with your 360 setup, check for width just to make sure. 95 and up Explorers have disc brakes. I have a 98 Cherokee XJ rear that should be a good fit for my 37, no matter what engine I install. I put a 95 Ranger rear in my 38, but had to add spacers to get a good width....
  12. I spent countless hours block sanding my 38. With my poor eyesight, I would have to wait until late evening, with the sun setting, to find missed spots to work on the next round, and I asked help finding blemishes, from anyone that stopped by. It was well worth the extra time to do a good job.
  13. If your goal is to have a car that can go fast when you want, then the 360 may be your best option. I have a 37 sedan, have not decided on an engine install yet also. I have a running 350 Chevy, a Jeep inline, (190hp HO), and a 56 Dodge inline engine.
  14. My three 37s, and my pair of 38s all are bolted on with no rubber mounts....
  15. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251424968406?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 If you are just looking for an easy conversion setup to use a spin on oil filter, this setup is on ebay. Looks like an easy, and clean setup for our old engines.....
  16. Your $300 sedan looks similar to my $300 four door Plymouth parts car, saved from the crusher. Scrap was worth more than $300. Hood and trunk lid missing.
  17. On my 38 Plymouth, I installed an 86 Dodge master cylinder, using my original pedal assembly. It worked good for 10 years, and later I replaced with a big Ford master cylinder, that works about the same as the smaller Dodge unit. Your tail lamp on the driver side looks like my Plymouth tail lamps, smaller than the Dodge light on your passenger side.....
  18. I bought a boat tach for my 38, has white face, works great. I believe has 3 wires, one for light, one to coil, one ground, or hot, my memory not working good..... With the numbers going from 0 to 4,000 or 5,000 on boat tachs, they are easy to read.....
  19. http://etereman.com/blog/automatic-transmission-2/dyno-testing-a-re-manufactured-automatic-transmission-and-why-its-important/ I had never seen any info on transmission dyno testing before. Found this site this morning.
  20. I notice the 2014 calendar starts out like the 1941 calendar. Good Luck to the 1941 Mopar Owners this year......
  21. I have been thinking of getting a small building to store some of my Plymouth parts, like the building my neighbors bought from Lowes, about a 10 x 10, I believe. They seem very durable, since my neighbor's building rolled down his driveway 4 times and still was in ok shape, but the 5th time it rolled down, it did not do so well. ....
  22. Lumpy, My 38 Plymouth has 80Hp, runs good, easy to drive and steer, fun to drive. I have been considering my 98 Jeep inline engine for my next project, 37 Plymouth. This engine has 190HP, has an automatic trans behind it also. My Jeeps are about the same weight as my Plymouths, so 190Hp would be very much fun to drive, but for someone looking for more power to tow much weight, the Jeep inline would not have enough power. I pull small trailers around with my Jeeps, with firewood, brush, etc., but that is about it.....
  23. More or less power does not always make more mpg. Have the right amount of power for your vehicle is what is important. My old chevy truck with a small v8, 180hp, got 27mpg on a 400 mile trip, where as my newer Chevy truck with a small v8,230hp, got 20 mpg on the same trip.
  24. My 1936 Dodge starter, 218, and my 1956 starter, 230, will interchange, was not sure about a 251 Desoto....
  25. Be sure and check your starter, to see if it will match with the flywheel you will be using. Some starter have a different depth...
