  1. I would never join a club which would have a member like me . By one of the Marx brothers .
  2. You didn't mention the obvious valve tappet . When checking those just slip a feeler guage in the gap and listen .
  3. The coolant level in your radiator will go down if that is water coming out of your tailpipe . Sometimes after the system is warm , you might see bubbles comming up in the radiator if the head gasket is bad . Harbor Freight compression guages are not too expensive . White smoke usually indicates water .
  4. The quality of the tune up parts would make a difference too . The original Autolite parts are real good stuff compared to some of the re-pop stuff available .
  5. If you have replaced the oil pump , here is a tip from Vintage Power Wagons ; " It is very important to prime the oil pump prior to installation . Before you start the engine , remove the oil pump and completely submerge oil pump in clean oil . Turn the shaft by hand until there are no more air bubbles . Reinstall the pump with a new gasket . ... Disconnect the coil wire and crank the engine until you have pressure on the guage . Reconnect the coil wire and start the engine . " I agree with Lou's description above also .
  6. There is one more benifit to using the above method ; Cash back from the credit card company . I just received a check for $50 . :
  7. Yes , some shops still recore with honeycomb but it is very expensive .
  8. winsor8 , Did you mean to say an external transmission cooler ? Your stock radiator wasn't made to hold much , if any , pressure , I understand that they will split a seam along the tank if under pressure . How many pound cap are you planning on using ? Perhaps your radiator man knows best .
  9. It's not very much work to pull off the valve covers and turn the engine over to see if a valve or two are stuck . Much less work than pulling the head .
  10. My brass freeze plugs were set in with JB Weld two years ago . No problems so far .
  11. If you want to use the original block , it is common to put sleeves in the cylinders to bring them back to the original size . My personal opinion is that some of the cylinders are very close together to begin with and it is hard enough for the head gasket to keep them sealed . The idea of making one engine from two is fine too . Try some good penetrating oil on the water distribution tube and some of the guys have made home-made pullers for that project , In the worst case a hole can be drilled in the rear of the block to get all of the pieces out and a welch plug inserted afterwards . I see water distribution tubes on ebay often .
  12. Ed , I am looking for all three pieces . As they would be difficult to ship I will hold off untill I find all three at once . Thanks
  13. Ya Ed , Do you need the headliner retainer strips on that POS truck ?
  14. I found some self-stick aluminum foil at the local hardware store .
  15. The number one cylinder is at the front of the car .
  16. I ground my battery on one of the starter mounting bolts . I got this tip came from Vintage Power Wagons sales catolog .
  17. To see a picture go to ebay and type in thread file . I bought a new one for one cent and seven dollars shipping .
  18. James , I'm looking for the three metal strips that hold up the headliner in a 1939 - 1947 dodge truck . One over the windshield and one over each side window . Yes , I know you mentioned Desoto but I threw that in anyway . I'm in Stockton Ca .
  19. Rodney , I have a shop manual for a 1938 dodge 1/2 ton truck and the clutch pedal freeplay is 1and 1/16 inch , that is quite a bunch . I don't know if the freeplay is the same for a car though .
  20. I had been wondering if the Ball & Ball carburators had got that name from the two balls down inside (no wise cracks here) . The name came from a Mr. Ball and his son Mr. Ball who decided to get into the carburator business when they gave up their steam engine business after deciding that the future didn't look too bright for that profession .
  21. When you push the piston back into the caliper , brake fluid is going to be pushed back into the master cylinder . If your master cylinder is topped off , the fluid has no place to go unless the cap is off or loose, then it dribbles over the edges . So either just let it dribble or take some fluid out beforehand and probably leave the cap loose .
  22. "What is the best way to center the cover without the special tool ?" Very simple , install the cover loosly and then put in the center hub . The center hub centers the cover , Then tighten the bolts .
  23. If you want to see pictires of spark plugs and desciptions of problems go to http://bullittarchive.com go to the general maintence section then go to Reading Spark Plugs
  24. My non-stock radiator needed to be recored and was a 3-row . I asked the repair shop to make it a 4-row and my vehicle now runs at 160 . ( perhaps a little too cold )
  25. Less than a year ago I bought new whitewall tires from Firestone that have a whitewall about 1 1/2 inches wide . In the past I have cleaned whitewalls with ajax cleanser and had no problems with that method . On my new tires the whitewalls turn light brown soon after cleaning with ajax and I have even used light sandpaper on them followed up with Armorall but they still turn light brown . Any suggestions ?
