  1. Just put it in the vise and pull it straight . It helps if your work bench is fastened to the wall .

  3. I was in Superior a couple of months ago . Just a few miles over the state border in Duluth is the Maritime Visitor Center ( museum ) They have a lot of the old boat engines on display and a bunch of other neat old stuff . They even have a section of old water pipe made from wood that was in service under the city of Duluth . No cover charge . Worth a visit for sure . Bring a jacket , it is by the water .
  4. The bent tie rod you can probably straighten with a bench vise . you might need a cheater bar .

  6. On a different forum , a guy mentioned that it was almost impossible to stop water leaks from using a ' hump ' head on a non-hump, block . What he ended up doing was threading the extra passage in the head and plugging the hole with a recessed pipe plug . I don't know anything else about this procedure but I think that process should be avoided . There are a couple of heads on ebay right now . Vintage Power Wagons sells NOS heads , the price was $125 or $135 about a year ago plus shipping . Perhaps someone has a used one . Perhaps also someone will trade for your hump head .
  7. The thermostat that you received in the mail is the modern correct replacement for the old style that you pictured .
  8. It is from a 1989 Dakota 4x4 , 9 x 2 1/2 " brake shoes , 3 " housing diameter (for shafts ) . My truck is a 1941 . I had a new drive shaft made too . Installed in 2001 .
  9. Jeff , My engine is stock , rebuilt a few years ago , 218 . I have been driving it this way for several years too . OK , the before ; first gear was much too low and high wasn't high enough for the freeway . After : No problem starting off in first and great on the freeway , 70 mph all day . You live quite a distance away but if you ever get up this way we can take a ride . I had originally planed to put in a T5 transmission but that was ruled out because my emergency brake would be gone .
  10. What diameter are your tires ? I run a 2.94 with 28 inch tires , it is fine . 218 engine .

  12. Tim , In your photo of the Pilot House mirror brackets , it looks like the passenger side bracket is longer than the drivers side bracket . If that is so , then a guy wouldn't just reverse engineer the drivers side bracket for a passenger side bracket . On my truck with the different style brackets , the longer right side bracket helps the driver to see around the window frame .
  13. Greg , Why is that ? How about a 1952 Chevy , would that run a little bit better with positive ground too , even though it is designed for 6 volt negative ground ? Just asking .
  14. My 1941 truck fuel tank outlet takes the same fitting used on a brake line . ( flared )
  15. I bought some suspension parts from Rare Parts . Their prices were a little high but I didn't pay shipping so it was comparable to the mail order prices . They advertise that they will build suspension parts from scratch if they don't have what you need .
  16. On the 1947 mirror brackets , I bought a right hand bracket and it is slightly longer than the left . It works well on my truck (1941 ) . Just so you know .
  17. Wow ! It sits for a few years and you start it right up and drive away .
  18. If you want synchronizers put in a 3 speed . But you will have to change the bell housing too . 2 nd & 3 rd gear were synchronized on the 3 speed . My 1941 has the synochronizers and I really like it compared to the non-synchronized . You might be able to re-drill the 4 speed bell housing for mounting the 3 speed . Or go with the 4 speed syncro that Merle mentioned .
  19. When describing the action of the heat riser , the terms open and closed mean different things to different people . Put it exactly as Greg described it in the above post .
  20. Here is the reply I got on that site ; Jerry, Shouldn't be a problem, going the other way can sometimes be a worry as the valve recess cast into the head can be smaller. If you have the option to measure before you commit to buy, you can compare the openings. Also the more open combustion chamber will possibly lower compression a little, so you may want to plane it a little to square things up.
  21. I posted your question over on the 1939 - 1947 dodge truck site . Some of those early trucks had the 201 engine .
  22. Bill , Looking at the space between the front of the head and the water pump ... you can see a bulge that is a water passage in the head . Someone posted a nice photo of the " hump " head a while back . The non-hump head is just straight across the front .
  23. If one of your transmissions has some synochronized gears , that one would be preferable over one that doesn't . The 1941 Plymouth truck in the 3 speed model had second and third gear synchronized .
  24. Why don't you replace it with a NOS head . Vintage power Wagons has them for $135 plus shipping . That is what I did with my cracked head , no magnafluxing , no plaining flat . Just clean off the preservitive and put it on . For the 218/230 engines , specify with or without the hump . 1-888-695-0578
  25. The old motors that I have seen have small ports for oiling the bearings or bushings . Perhaps someone else can help with your other questions .
