    New paint

just price a good quality epoxy enamel paint that will cost you a couple of hundred dollar plus the primers. Yes there is a lot of time spent to paint a car correctly and for it to have a quality job last for years. i had mine stripped to all bare metal, all windows removed, new headliners, new glass put into the car, mounted and balanced five tires pin stripped and he also helped reassemble the car. The cost was $2900. Thr was a steal but that is all he wanted. The paint has lasted 25 years and still has its shne and is in fantastic shape. The seats were all removed and the floor boards and the truck area was also painted the same color. I would hate to know what the cost would be today close to 7-10k. Rich Hartung
  3. In my 1939 Desoto service manual there are pictures of the electric wier motor and how the linkage is attached. i would check your 41 dodge service manual to see if there are any pictures. The likage clips on with a c clip and the two conneting arms are bolted together on my 39 desoto. Not sure if you have electric or vaccumm wipers. i do have a TRICO catalog rich hartung
  4. Remember the saying Old Guys Rule and Dad Knows Best. Look to the experienced old timers they have a lot of old knowledge that we take for granted. I try to learn something everyday. That is why I like going through my Motors books. I was able to answer a question on the commutator end bearing that is really not replaceable it could be done but was designed not to be removed. 5. On the Autolite Dizzy cap I thought there should be a small rubber plug that comes with the cap and that this hole should closed with the plug. I will have to find one of my Autolite caps for my 39 Desoto and see if they have the smallpiece of paper with the instructions regarding the plug. SInce you brought up the fact regarding the two small ball bearings being in the wrong holes. This is why I always suugest that you get a couple of cardboard egg cartoon and number is slot. So that when you dissasemble the carb you put each individual part into a numbered slot. This way nothing gets out of order. And when you reassemble you just start with the last slot and go backwards. This will eleminate the confusion and not put the wrong ball into the wrong location. You can also use a daily pill container from your dollar store or Pharmacy. Rich Hartung
  6. Clay: I know that is a very special feeling getting behind the wheel after the long restoration of this car. It has been a long journey. I know you will get to enjoy more driving in this beautiful coupe. I am also glad that I was able to loan you some of the miller tools to get the car back onto the road. Keep all of us posted as you make the finishing adjustments. Rich Hartung
  7. we are all at the mercy of each package carrier. Yes i see the Amazon Prime truck in my neighborhood everyday. Sometimes the USPO is slow, then FedEx, then UPS. So I guess just pick you poison as to your sender and hope for the best delivery service. Rich Hartung
  8. I use the bypass filter system with the AC metal canister and use the NAPA 1010Gold filter. I have been running this for 35 Years and my oil pressure is good the filter has worked this long for me. I change every couple of years. The original PB1/2 throwaway filter type were good for 8000 miles becasue of being a bypass filter. So i am going to stay with what i have and may car came from the factory with the PB1/2 filtering system and now has almost 100k Rich Hartung desoto1939
  9. stalag17 This is rich hartung, desoto1939, i sent you a PM via your Id link. Rich
  10. The gentleman is correct and he is very knowledgeable. Take his information and get to know this salesperson. The system was a By-Pass system and only portions of the oil is filtered. They made an oil canister throwawy metal filter call by Fram PB1/2. These are no longer made and if found cost around $70 and are good for 8000 miles. Get the newer style that has a drop in filter that goes into a metal housing. The filter element cost around $15. and is easier to chnage and less costly. If have the drop in style on my 39 desoto and it works just fine keeps the oil clean. I use 10W40 oil for the past 35 years that I have owned the car. The next question that you will have what oil should i use. The oils of today are much better than th eoils from the 30-40-50's. Even the cheap oil sold at Walmart is far better than the oil that was oringally used. So if you car does not have a current filter then do no and again DO Not use a multi viscocity weitgh detergent oil. It will loosen up the sludge in the oil pan. Stay with a conventional oil straight weight 30 weight oil. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  11. The gentleman thought it was the Hayes bodied coupe and that would of had a back seat. Yes there were only 600 made for Dodge, 600+ for Desoto and the rest for Chrylser. Since you have the self inthe back and a little door onthe passenger side where the spare tire is stored this is a Businessmans coupe. There approx 12800 of these made Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  12. I have a 39 Desoto so what information are you looking for? Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  13. Doug This is rich Hartung and I am the contact person that created the setup document on the Sisson choke. Call me at my cellphone 484-431-8157 or home 610-630-9188 or desoto1939@aol.com Yes if they changed to the 1949 manifold than you need the 1949 Sisson Choke that mounts in front of the carb. And yes these cost even more and can run into the $200-300 range for NOS. Suggest that you take some pictures of the carb setup and the choke buttery setup and linkage Rich Hartung
  14. first go to your parts book if you have one. If not then get one becasue this is one of the basic books you will need for your truck. Look up the part number and send it to me I have a MoPar basic nuts and bolts catalog that breaks down the basic parts by their MoPar numbers and then if your part is inthe book I can then determine the nut size and threads. Rich Desoto1939@aol.com
  15. Also note that on the new manifold there is no small holes on the flange for a govenor like on the old flange. Need to know what car or truck and year the new manifold came from and also to verify that the correct manifold was originally on your engine. Need to know the part numbers to make sure. Rich Hartung
  16. About 12 years ago I was able to purchase the 25 inch all brass water tube for my 1939 Desoto. You do not see these very often and have not seen any at Hershey inthe past several years. even the galvanized 23 and 25 inch one are hard to find. I have several of the galvanized and one brass one. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  17. don: So sorry to hear that the car has now become an issue becasue of your health. Might also suggest that you list the car with the National Desoto club rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  18. i like the swamp cooler on the rear door. rich
  19. here is the link on ebay for the cummutator end for your starter maw2002f: https://www.ebay.com/itm/184566150184?epid=1630569240&hash=item2af8fff428:g:tdwAAOSw7elfyolr this unit was use on desoto from 1938-50 same for dodge dodge truck 41-50 ply canadian 38-42 and 46-50 rich Hartung
  20. ratbailey: Now that you have tapped the bearing I do not think you would want to install the commutator back onto the starter. The shaft then will not pit properly. Purchase the NOS end that is on Ebay and install it and be done with the repair. I went out and looked at the starter on my 39 Desoto and as I thought there is an oil cap to lubricate this bushing and felt washer. On your unit I di dnot see an oil cap. Every 6 months you should be putting oil in the oil cap on both the starter and the generator to keep these bushing oiled. This is why they were a permanent non removable item. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  21. OK i might have an answer for everyone on this topic. I was reading on starter motor for the Mopar. Motor Auto repair 1935-53 edition. Quote " form the commutator end: "Where the bearing is replaceable, it should be pressed out into place with the correct arbor, as the arbor determines the inside diameter of the bearing. If the bearing is not removeable, replace the complete head." So in this case the bearing is not removable then replace the commutator head. Having the repair manuals always comes to the rescue to explain what to do. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  22. Plymouthy what tool do you use to remove the bushing? I know that on the pilot bushing, which this is similar to, the pilot bushing is a pressure fit in the hole. There is a special Miller tool that is threaded on on. I have both of these tools but on the picture that the poster is showing these tools will not work becasue of the tacked washer. Rich
  23. Plymouthy. The bushing that he is showing in his pictures is tack welded into an outer covering. So you would have to remove the tack weld get the new bushing then tack weld it back in and hopefully not ruin the outer flange. If youhave the tools to do this then tat is great but if you do not then what is the cost of a repair versus the cost and time to replace NOS commutator end. rich
  24. ratbailey: Hope you received the documents regarding your generator. Look closely at the various gens that were used for your car then look at the tag on your car. Then look at the appropriate commutation end number from the lsiting from the Autolite page. Go on Ebay and see if you can find a NOS. I would do that first to correct the problem and then tinker around with the old unit. At least then you can drive the car. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  25. on my look up is shows additioal cost of $62. just did the same path that you posted. rich
