  1. On the pump that you are showing the lower left area of the wp is now thicker than the original pump. If you have the factory three studs installed in the front of the engine block you will have to pull the lower left stud becsue of the additional thickness of the newer styled water pump. So do you have three studs that are threaded or only two and then you use the bolt to tightenup the pump where the pump is now thicker. My 39 desoto has all three treaded studs. 2. Do your fog light have replaceable bulbs or are they sealed beam bulbs. If you have a single element bulb I would think you can just wire up directly to the appropriate front right or left wire from the turn signal switch. Also assuming that you have a 6 volt system and not 12 volt. So are you planning on haveing your fog light work and then blink as a turn signal. would have to have a doble filament bulb like a turn signal bulb 1158 but not sure if that is going to provide enought light to run the foglight to help light the roadway. So baisically what are you trying to accomplish??? I used the fender lamp mounted light that you find on the 39 Dodges and made them my turn signals. I have two of the outer metal body with the lens and might have the mounting plate not sure about the plate under the fender. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  3. 34 Plymouth: The first thing that you should have is a parts manual for your 34 Plymouth. In the frame and and fender section it would list all of the parts associated with your car. This is one of the most important manuals to have to reference the various parts that go on your car. In your posting we have not seen any reference that you referred to your parts manual. You only need to get a reprint manual and do not need a factory perfect MoPar parts book. So let us know if you have a parts book and also suggest that you purchase a service manual on the car another basic manual to have when owening an antique car. I am not trying to be smart with my replay back to you. Purchase the manuals and you will be surprised at the amount of documentation and knowledge that you will have at your finger tips. Theer is a 34 Ply parts manual on ebay for $40. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  4. In our techinical section there is a reference to a MoPar catalog regarding the Headlamp lens and sealed Beam that were used on of MoPar cars. The link is not working. Can someone find this document for me? i am trying to put together a power point presentation on the Lens, headlight sockets and bulbs for the prewar cars and trucks and to be even more specific on the Desoto. Next years NDC convention will be held in Altoona,PA. Thanks, Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  5. Purple Cow: I looked in my autolite catalog and for 1946-48 Dodge here is the info: Dizzy IGS 4207a_1 cap igc-1107s rotor igs 1016B Contact IGP3028ES Condensor IG3927G Breaker Plate IGS 3004J Housing IGS2158 shaft IGS1113r Spring set IG636HS Vacuum: VC 2082R Service coil CR-4001 Looks like you have the correct dizzy rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  6. John: About 5 years ago I have the entire tool and the blank inner core and the tool to square the ends and also the various outer cable and then ends that attached to the outer core. I sold that entire unit at Hershey. But yes I remember the tool that you are talking about. The tool also had the catalog that told you what parts to use to make a coble for any speciic car or truck. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  7. Now that the brake backer plate is totally loos you should beable to remove the plate fromthe spindle. You might have to take it to a machne shop and have them press out the eccentric anchor pin with an arbor press but make sure that the area around the pin os support so that you do not bend or distort thissection of the backer plate. Just a suggetion rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  8. Sniper He has the two metal spring that hook t the condensot incorretly attached according to my spare breaker pkate and your spare dizzy the copper spring and the other metal flas contact is located to the right of the upright he has his on the left of the upright and this is causing the grounding. Look at his pictures and you will see what I am talking about. Rich desoto1939
  9. I am stumped maybe someone switch some parts from an earlier car. I would just make a tracing of the spacer and make one to fit. That also stumps me. Someone might beable to provide more info. I have knowledge uptil the 42 desotos Rich Hartung
  10. Since this seems to be the Master Parts manual items change and items get no longer lsited and or used and or stocked. i see the same in my 1936-42 Master Desoto manual. I would suggest that you go to your specific year parts manual and see if the part number is listed and it might even show what the part looks like. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  11. if you have a parts manual for your car and go to the clutch section or trans section there should be a part number listed. You will have to spend sometime to identify the part number. I would assume that the plate would be as thick to match up with the attaching sheet metal plate so if you measure the space with the outer plate in position then you will have the thickness that you need to make the adapter Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  12. I have the leather style covering that attaches to the ends the drive shaft and the housing. Send me you email address and I will send you pictures of what I have the leather covering number is 42083 Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  13. I just looked at a NOS breaker plate for my 39 Desoto IGS-3004A and on mine the copper flat blade and the other metal blade are on the left side of the attachment point where the two small wire connect. You have you two flat metal blades attached to the right side and not the left sie and this looks to grounding out the points also. try rerouting these two items to the other side and then what happens. Also after we get the specific info on the dizzy then would also suggest that you get a NOS breaker plate assembly so that you have one on hand the next time you need to tune up the car.
  14. can you clean up the plate on the dizzy body and list the number on the dizzy such as IGS-4102x or IGT-xxxxx. This is important to know and i can tell you the proper internal wire number to get to replace the home made wires and also the correct internal parts such as breaker plate, cap rot condensor and points. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  15. I agree with sniper when I saw the gap on the points way to big again set the gap when the cam in on the high spot or a point on the cam rotor. recheck your setting. I would also set it at 19 or 18 becasue of wear see if that helps. If at 18 and that works then maybe move to 19. at a smaller rate points might wear faster but if you are getting spark then you can make finer adjustments. Also look for the smaller autolite internal wires. rich Hartung
  16. Were were the pictures of your cars taken? was it at the WWII reenactment weekend at the Reading Airport in reading Pa at Spatz field? I usually show my 39 Desoto at this event but was not able to make it this year and my car is usually located near the hangers of the Home Front near the Gulf gas station. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  17. Tom, We all have been there with problems and if we can help someone get their car back on the raod thats what the hobby is all about, Passing on accumulated knowledge. Richartung desoto1939@aol.com
  18. you willhave to find a good automotive parts house that has lower radiator hoses that are one piece and have the correct opening size and it wil lbe a trail and error setup and you might even have to cut it to fit. Why not go back to the metal tube and the two pieces of rubber hose much easier to repair. Rich Hartung
  19. Thats always a nice feeling when you can take your old car/truck to an event for a special person or special event to brighten their day. We all take it for granted about our health and our lives. The little things are what make it special and I hope everyone felt some pride to help the gentleman that was ill and that he could get maybe one of his last wishes in life. Positive response for all that attended the car hobby is a very unique club. Rich Hartung
  20. Keithb7: i have a 39 Desoto and I know how you feel. I went to a car show the other night that was as we call it a rice burner show with the loud music etc, and the low riders. When I was showing the 39 Desoto many people old and young came over to the car and they were asking a lot of questions and I was glad to provide some education about these older cars and now how the hobby is changing. I felt that everyone respected the car. I know us old car guys can get upset about how the hobby is changing but remember when the model t and the brass cars were the in thing and thne the Model A and the early to mid 40s car became the in thing. Those early collectors were frustrated with us because we were changing the hobby. So we are now in the same position, everything evolves and can not stand still or we stagnate. So I say continue to enjoy our cars, have the please of driving something unique, slow down an enjoy the scenery, make those fond memories life is short so enjoy what pleases you and you can not please everyone. Pass along your education and knowledge to make it a better world, this is how we all learned and is the basic prinicpal of learning. Knowledge has to be passed on. Keith: Keep your youtube videos comeing along I watch them when ever I can. wathed your video on the Diizy rebuild. There was a Miller Factory that is used to drive out and in the twobushings inthe dizzy body and a spacer rings. I do have that tool in my collection. I want to see if i can find an Autolite used dizzy at Hershey cheap it does not have to fit my 39 Desoto but to use as demonstration piece at next Years National desoto Conventionto be held in Altoona,PA during a lecture session. Most owners have never taken one apart and I feelit is a good topic. Any specific videos that you have on any topic is appreciated. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  21. After reading your post about the ballast these were used on 12 volts systems and not 6 volt systems. So do you have a 12 or 6 volt system inthe car is the first question. There are 12v and 6 volt coils. If youhave a 6 volt New coil and the car is positive ground then the ignition switch wire connects to the negative side of the coil. The new coils will have two posts on the top of the coil marked + and -. Connect the ignition switch wire to the negative and then the positive goes to the contact point where the breaker plate comes out of the dizzy. Also check on the breaker plate where it comes out of the body of the dizzy that there should be a rubber plug that has a slot for the breaker plate to extend out of the body. There also should be a piece of bakeolite material under this protrusion. This is to prevent the breaker plate from grounding out and then you get no sparks becasue the diizy grounded itself.. Check this area this also might be your problem. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  22. I have an aftermarket AC metal housing like what you have on your car. I took my housing to a napa store and we tried several of the drop in filter elements. I use the NAPA 1010 Gold filter and these were used on the Mercedes cars. The napa 1010 is the same as a Wixx 1010 filter. So get a filter that fits the canister and get two while you are there then you have a spare ready for the next oil and filter change. Most of the time you have to order these and wait a day. I use a meat baster to suck out the old oil from the bottom of the metal canister and do not use the drain plug, to messy. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  23. the gasket at the bottom of the arb should have four slots in it. One of the slots will matach up with a hole in the base. This gasket is the one that is to be used if there is no govener on the car. The carb that you have is a very popular carb. Also remove the carb and make sure that you have the proper gasket and also that there is nothing remaining of an older gasket. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  24. Nice video: I had an issue where the bleeder screw was leaking fluid. It was not from the bleeder hole inthe screw but with the fluid seeping out via the treads onthe bleeder screw. On my 1939 Desoto they use a very different type bleeder crew that had a cap on the end of the bleeder screw. These are hard to find. I had chnaged out my bleeder screw about 5-10 years ago and there never was any issue with leaking fluid. Had the car up on jack stand and noticed some fluid onthe back of the rim and a spot of fluid on the floor. Pulled the rim and the drum. No leakage from the single brake cylinder that has step down piston. Looked at the back of the backing plate and then saw the issue with the bleeder screw. Changes to another new screw and the same thing was happening. Found a NOS brake syslinder that I had and put inthe original style bleeder screw and the weeping stopped. Found a brake specialist in Michigan and he had the replacement bleede screw that had the correct taper to seat the screw. replaced the bleeder screw with the new replacement and the issue was solved. Might have been that the taper on the bleeder screw was not fully making contact to seal the fluid. So the small things can cause issues. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
