  1. the 39 desoto had them and they are still in my car. Chrysler made the wether protection spark plug kit that had a metal cup that sat in each spark plug hole and the plug then screwed into teh ehad and then there was a rubber boot that covered the top of the plug. This water issue was very common in the cars that had the butterfly style hood becasue of the hood hinge was directly over the top of the plugs. Also they found out that by having the coil inthe firewall and because of moisture issue they move the coil to a metal braket colser to the dizzy to help prevent the moisture issue. 2. Rob: Glad that you got the right parts. Hope the measurements that I took for you and the pictures helped to get your u joints rebuilt. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  3. I was looking in My Plymounth 1929-39 MAster PArts books Vol 1 and 2 and I saw that there was note regarding RHD cars and the MC. There was a note that there isa specific heat shield that was used on the RHD cars. I would think this was used becasue of the exhaust manofold and exhaut pipes being near the MC and not not heat up the brake fluid. Not sure if you have the heat shield but just thought I would mention it. I am sorry but there is no picture of the heat shield so I can not send you any picture of what it should look like and how it attaches. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  4. These studs were welded on studs and not a true bolt that treads into the top of the manifold. At least that is how they are on my 39 Desoto that uses the Sisson automatic choke. If you can weld on a new stud then that will help. You could also maybe use a modern hose aligator clap to hold te unit down onto the top of the manifold, The gasket is needed to help with the heat transfer fromthe manifold to the bimetal plate that moves the choke lever rod. These choeks have gotent o be real expensive. I have a couple of these NOS if you need one. I also have the testing stand to verify that your old choke is working correctly and also have the Sisson choke instructions on CD. 5. Here is an other option. Take steel rod and thread it the same as the lugbolts It only has to have approx. an 1 to 2 inches of the same thread. Then thread this into the drum and then put the rim with tire through one of the lugbolt holes in the rim and then center the rim with another lug bolt. Install all 4 bolts then remove the steel rod and install the last bolts. I have this same metal tool for my 2011 Volvo because they did not have the mounting peg and it worls and saves a lot of aggravation and struggling with the wheel . Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  6. ok here is your answer: Ply 1940-54 Tierods: Right side for right rod ES60R left side ES60L For left side for right rod ES131R left side ES131L Outer ends right side ES166R left side ES165R you can find these number when doing a search on ebay and also take these number with you to a swap meet. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com This information was taken from my McQuay Norris catalog 1936-61
  7. If I remeber correctly the 39 MC is the same as my 39 Desoto. There should be a moutning flange that the MC attaches to on the two bolt holes at the bottom of the MC unit. IS the flange still on the frame of the car or was that removed when you sent the MC out to be resleeved and they might not have sent that back to you. Also check your parts book it shoudl show a picture of the flange. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  8. The Monroe shocks that will fit ar Monroe Front 5752 rear 3100. If you go to their wepage you can look up your car and also get the specs on therir shocks and then if you can not get these shocks you would at least have the specs. I use the same shocks on my 39 Desoto. rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. Well just got home late last night and beat the snow and winter storm from Asheville NC. Went down and did some touring and went to the Biltmore estate that belonged to the Vanderbuilts. Boy money did have its place in time I have now officially changed my last name Vanderhart and we are the long long lost cousins to the Vanderbuilts. I have attached some pictures of the 1913 Steven - Duryea that was used by the Vanderbuilts. Enjoy: Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  10. Hey Greg, Even the AACA does not judge for cars being to shiny and even over restored is not taken off. In my estimation how do the judges even know how shiny the paint would have been back then? I have seen many cars that have lacqer paint and have a great shine. So if any of their cars or truck have a clear coat then they also should be eliminated from judging only single stage paint was available back then. So to be that critical is allitle over the top. You can take a point off for the paint. So if any 1939 Mopar has the black brake/clutch and gas pedal then the car should not be judged becasue this is also incorrect. Its your car and not theirs so just enjoy it. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  11. My 39 Desoto was painted back a green color single stage enamel back in 1997. All I have ever done is once or twice a year use a claybar on the paint to remove the road grime and small stuff. I use the maguier detailer spary as my wetting agent to use with the claybar. I then have only used the Mcguires Tech wax on the car and I have retained the shine on the car. The original cars came with single stage so that is also why I stayed with single stage. Rich Hartung
  12. This is a Sisson Automatic Choke as has been stated from above. Becareful on which sisson choke you are looking at on ebay. There are two different styles. The 49 Plymouth and up willnopt work on your car becasue of the position that the control lever is on that model. The 49 and up are costly as you can see and the early one that you use are also not cheap. Contact me I have a couple. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  13. This morning I led a group from the Chester county antique car club to the 3Dog Gage in Boyertown, PA. They had an openhouse this morning. This museum/restoration is run by the Myers family out of Worchester PA. In this collection he has he 1932 Ford Hottrod that has won several major awards. Classic race cars, Classic hot rods from the 50 and is currently working on a Ford Cobra body. The tour was free and they have a very nice collection of cars. There is a car that is part of the Paul Newman racing cars. Also they had several Chrysler Hemi engines and a hotrod with a Chrysler Hemi that has a supercharger that is chain driven and not belt drive. The body of the cobra was on a rack and you could see the internal framework and how the aluminum body is attached by hammering the ends of the body around the steel frame work. All of local PA members missed a great museum. I have attached some pictures for your viewing please. if anyone want to see other photos I can send them to you
  14. I have seen similar hood hinges for the early plymouths that are made of stailess steel. The seller is on Ebay so you might seqarch there and be able to find the seller and see if he has a long enough section that might work on your car. The hood center strip on my 39 Desoto is Chromed plated all the beltmolding on my car is stainless. thry this link on ebay 1949-50 MOPAR PLYMOUTH HOOD CENTER MOULDING (NOS) PT# 1298932 selling for arounf 30 dollars Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  15. open the front door and then theere should a very little screw that goies into the door frame just in the same location as the lock. This hold the lock inthe door frame. Check you service manual and look for the screw that is how it done on my 39 Desoto. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  16. are you sure about the number of quarts being 15? rich hartung
  17. Also look arounf any molding to see where it might have been taped and the new paint if it was repainted is on some of the trim or rubber gaskets. ususeally you will find a tell tale sign of this areound the windsheild modlings or rear window modings and some times the vent windows. If you can also loosen upa taillight assembly and then pull in out of the fender alittle you might see a difference in the paint. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  18. Did you pullthe venturi tube out of the carb body and if you did, did you use the correct carter tool to do this. This is a very very thin brass tube and if it is not removed and install correctly can also cause issues.. Most home rebuilder do not take this tube out becasue they do not have the proper tools and just spray Carb cleaner up the tube hole to clean it out. Just another thought. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  19. did you put the correct steel ball in the correct location. If you have a ball and Ball carb there were two small steel balls did you put them back into the correct holes or did your insertt the wrong one in the wrong hole????? Rich HArtung
  20. all you will have to do is runthe correct colored wire to the 3 pronged sealed beam socket. The sockets are all the same. rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  21. Here is another option to help when driving on high speed access roads. I have a 39 Desoto also still stock engine. My car drives and handles the best around 50 MPH becasue it is a 3 speed and has the 4.11 rear end. I have attache a couple of clipon red bicycle flashing light to the license plate that sits inthe middle of the trunk lid. I hae the flashing at a moderate speed of flashing pattenr. I have noticed that when I have th eunit on the peopel seem to give me some more space in the rear and generally do not climb up my buttend. We willnot bebale to stop all of the people that travel like bats out of HxLL and also the people that want to lok at the car when passing you but thais has help and worked for me. I live outside of Philadlephia with all major access roads being 2-3 lane highways. Also you can get some magnitised strip and then add refelective red tape to it and then stick this on your truck lid or some where on the back of the car to warn people. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  22. Why did you start the car to build up vacuum pressure. The original car and MC would not have been a power assist braking system. To me it sould as if you have something still install incorrectly in the MC. How did you bleed the brakes at each wheel cylinder? Did you use a hand vacuum mighty kit to bleed or did you have someone sit inthe car and push the brake pedal to bleed each wheel cylinder? Where did you statrt the bleeding process, which wheel. SHould start at the furthest wheel from the MC which would be the Right rear, then left rear then right front then left fron to get an even flow of fluid tothe wheels. The instruction should have been in the MC rebuild kit I will look to see if I have some instructions this same rebuild would be the same for my 39 Desoto with the same MC. rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  23. Hope everyone in the Northeastern pasrt of the coutry is ok this morning. In the Philadelphia we were sparred the snow fall. They had anticipated 6-12 but we only got about 2-4. I know New Jersey along the coast and New York and up towards Boston got hit real hard. You cannot drive on the roads in NJ becasue of a State of emergency. Roads in Pa are open. Hope no one loses electricity or heat. You all take care and try to stay warm and do not over do it when shoveling snow. Take your time its not worth a heart attack. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com Valley Forge PA outside of Philadelphia PA
  24. what is the model number on the motor? how many wires are the wires hooked to a letered or number post on the motor? Is it an autolite motor or who made the motor would also help. I know onmy 39 Desoto I use an Auolite Ew4001 motor and it has three wires that connect toa labeled A, b and c post of the wiper motor and these then attach to the appropriate contacts on the wiper switch. so any info would be helpful and do you have the switch to go with the motor? Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  25. could it be used the support the rear fender and bolt to the frame and then to the bottom of the fender so that the fender can not be pushed in near the back of the wheel opening. Just a thought. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
