  1. Yes a few words at that I would say soooooooooo. Got the tank fixed and to reinstall back into the 39 Desoto. Rich Hartung
  2. Just got the tank returned to me this afternoon. I have a great mechanic that has experience with the older cars. He installed a new fitting into the tank. See picture and now I will put the tank back into the car. Rich Hartung
  3. I took the left rear tire off the car and disconnected the fuel supply line from the tank. I noticed that when I heard the snap it was not the internal ferrule but it was the flared connector that scews into the tank. Also the main fuel line is also flared on my 39 Desoto. So I know the 37-39 fuel tanks where all the same number for Chrysler/Desoto/Dodge and Plymouth. So I quess you can assume that Mopar did away with the internal furrell on the compression fitting. I dropped the tank and have taken it to my mechanic to have them remove the fitting and to install a new one. Will try to attach pictures of the cracked fitting and the flared fuel line. Will keep you posted on the repairs. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  4. I discovers a leak at the fuelline where it connects to the tank. I tried to tighten the nut on the line where it connects into the fitting on the fuel tank. The drip stoped but still saw a SMALL leak. I tighten it up somemore then heard a snap. I have drained the tank of all gas. So would they fuel line be a single flare or a double flare setup ANy help asspreciated. I will be pulling the rear wheel and then unscrew the line on Tuesday but just wanted to see if anyones the answer. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com cell 484-431-8157 .
  5. I have the Ammco Brake Gage tool 1750.  I rent out the tool. If you need to use the tool let me know and we can arrange for the toolto be shipped to you. I ask for a $400 down payment on the tool. As you know this tool is hard to find and the average cost is $400-600 on ebay.  I use you deposit money to ship and insure the tool to your home. You use it then return also insured for $400.  I inspect returned tool. then refund all but the shipping and ins cost and keep a useage fee of $25.  This fee is used to purchase other Mopar Fatory tools to support the maintenance of our older cars.  Let me know if you need the rent the tool.

  6. On the first picture this is the eccentric pin that control the heel of the brake shoe. This is an eccentric pins and is not a perfect circle. You have a metal clip that goes in a slot to hold the brake shoe onto this anchor pin. But on your example it does not look to be the horseshoe type clip or otherwise known as a c clip. There is a flat washer that has felt on the inside of the washer cup. This should also get a light oil on the felt waster. The oil keeps the eccentric pin wet with a slight film of oil to permit the shoe to pivot on the pin, Do not over oil the felt washer. So do you have a homemade lip or is this the correct style for your car. Do not adjust the eccentric pins unless you have access to an Ammco brake gage 1750 tool or you will then have your brake shoes out of alignment. Rich Hartung
  7. Walt: A lot has change since 1977. All of the dirt fields are no longer used. The old White field which was the airport is just used for overflow parking. The chocolate field, Green Field is all now paved parking lots. The parking lot over by the old stadium is also full of vendors when you were there they used this section for the car show. The car show is now held on the Golf course. It is huge and wear good comfortable walking shoes because your will have tired feet at the end of the day. the old Red field which had the major hill in the middle is also gone they are now using this section as part of the amusement park. Looking forward to meeting up with you. Rich Hartung
  8. Ok, well we are only less than a month to go and the great car show and swap meet will again be held in Hershey PA starting Wed Oct 5 to Saturday Oct 8,2016 For anyone that has never been to this event there are approx. 8-10000 venders yes that is a correct number. The event is held on paved parking lots, but remember there is always the chance of the liquid sunshine or otherwise know as RAIN. so bring your rain gear along. Is there any members that are planning to atend and if so list the days that you might be attending the event. It would be nice if we all could get together on a specific day to meet each other to say hello and put a face to some of the members that have been posting articles on this forum. If you plan to attend then list your name dates and cellphone number if you wan to. If there are several people attending then I will try to arrange a date and time and specific meeting location. So who is in to going? Rich Hartung Thursday and Friday Oct 6/7 cell 484-431-8157

  14. I had a clutch job done on my 39 Desoto and after the car was returned it was running rough not smooth the mechanic stated that the HB needed to be replaced. After it was replaced this smoothed out the engine vibrations. This was done about 25 years ago. I put in a NOS unit Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  15. Most of the wire that was used for the horn wire was rubber coated so to prevent the cloth from wearing away. The shrink wrap is a good idea. As stated before tape the new wire to the old wire when pulling a new wire through the steering column there isa small metal tube that the wire needs to pass through in the steering box and this is the oly way to get the wire through the tube without any major issues. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  16. Did you play with the eccentrics and make any adjustments? Did you loosen the castle nut on the back of the backing plate for either of the eccentric and if you did then did you retighten the castle nut and also put the cotter pin back into the slot. I was getting a rumble and pul on one front brake and I discovered that the one eccentric locknut was not tight enough and this cause the issue. I have found out that sometime the new brake lining is hardening and get slick and this cause also cause issues and the lining glazes. clean the shoes with some brake cleaning spray think it a CRC product. Check the drum to make sure there is no brake dust. Just some suggestions. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  17. JibJob: according to my wagner Brake catalog the 42 Dodge using the lining number 1162 the same as my 39 Desoto. Do you have riveted lining. If so I have several sets with rivets. 3/16 thickness rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  18. Don is the MC a replacement or the original MC. That is the first question. If it is an orginal for what year is your car. I can look in my Wagner and also EIS catalog to get the cap that will fit the MC if it is an original. Did you try McMaster. If you know what years the MC fits then any good auto store should beable to get you a cap. I would inquire with another Radio rebuilder to see if a modern speaker would work that is my best answer to you. Rich Hartung Desoto1939!aol.com
  19. So if anyone has read the label on the old metal throwaway type the label stated that they were good for 5000 miles. So lets assume we only travel around at max maybe 1000-2000 miles in a single year. The drop in filters should not need to be replaced on a yearly basis. So I would figure that when the oil starts to get dirty but with a multi viscosity oil beig a detergent oil it will get dark sooner I would think that at least the dropin cartridge should last two years and if you just wanted to remove and clean out the housing and use it again for another year it should work just fine. So in that thinking and figure on 10 more years to own the car maybe 5 more filters I think I am ok. Also snce some farm equipment used these type of filter all we need to know is the diameter of the canister and the height that we need and the diameter of the hole in the center of filter and then any filter that matches the size should work. Just my 25 cents worth of updates. Rich Hartung
  20. I use a NAPA Golden 1010 drop in filter on my 39 Desoto and it is going into an AC oil filter metal housing. These are still available at NAPA. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  21. Ok you emailed SMS about the carpet and they did not reply back to you. I do understand that they should have a phone number. Did you make any effort to call them and try to talk to someone about the issue? From your posting it sounded as if you did not call them directly about the issue but took it upon your self to take the carpet apart so then you voided their warranty so the issue then became yours and not their.. Another suggestion is to always order a part from a major company like SMS and then use your credit card for payment. If there is an issue with the part and the company will not respond then you contact the Credit card company and put a hold on the payment of the item. They will then contact the merchant on your behalf to either gt a refund or get the item fixed. Since you took your own high road now you have no options left but have to eat the cost of the rug. 22. Odd experience with the 39 Desoto master cylinder which is the same as in your 36. My car was driven by the original owner from 1939 to 1965 and had 79000 mile on the odometer. The car was owned a second time but not driven that often and had a rebuilt engine. I took passion of the car and then started to notice that the brake pedal was not retracting after applying the bake it got harder to push. Let the car sit in the driveway about an hour and then the brake pedal was free. Discivered while doing a major brake job that the ORIGINAl and I say ORIGINAL Master Cylinder to this car was the issue. I took it out of the car after removing the floor boards. This is how you get to the MC that is bolted to the frame member. I took in out of the car and took the top lid off the body of the MC. I noticed the two small holes in the bottom of the reserviour and the front one I stuck a thin wire to make sure it was not clogged up and this was open as expected. To my surprise I did the same with the back weep hole but this time the wire would not go all the way throught in the bottom where the piston is located. I tried several times. Then used a stiffer metal rod and still the rod would not go through. I discovered that the machinist never fully taped the weep hole he only started the proess and never finished it. This is the number 3 in the prior picture of the hole that is behind the piston. I then taped the hole and the MC then worked correctly. But remember that this car was driven from 39-65 with this same issue. Not sure if this your problem but you never know what you might find. Also if your brake light switch needs to be removed put a piece of wood behind the brake pedal and wedge it up againt the floor board. This will prevent the brake pedal from going to the floor when removing the brakelight switch. then all you have to do is remove and reinstall the new one and connect the wires and no loss of brake fluid. 23. I sent you a PM aboput the Ammco brake tool. Rich Hartung
  24. did you soak the accelerator pump leather gasket in light oil to soften it up prior to installing it back in the carb? Do you have the correct small ball bearings in the correct holes also check the dog end on the throttle lickage that come across the head and then hocks on the carb. Sometimes they get a wear spot on them and a lip and this causes issues. These are just some thoughts not sure what you have done but might check these areas. Also check the breaker plate assembly in the distributor it might just need to be replaced with a NOS one. rich Hartung Desoto1939
