  1. Yep - get another one. Use the old gears to make wall art for your garage.
  2. One of the cooling problems with the P15 was the honey combs in the radiator were plugged with dirt dobber nests. There were lots of them. Pulled the radiator - cleaned out the dirt with a wire. Made a big difference. Doesn't over heat at idle now.
  3. I remember the exploding Firestone radials. The parents had put a new set of Firestone radials on the family car. Radials were new at that time. I was driving on the way back from grandma's with a car full of family and the front left new tire exploded - no warning. That pulled me into the on coming traffic - I was lucky that the car coming at us saw what was going on and pulled on to the shoulder giving me room to pass. Was also lucky that I knew what to do. Didn't hit the brakes and didn't try to pull back into my lane too fast. Driving the rest of the way home with one bias ply and one radial on the front was fun. To this day I am not a fan of Firestone.
  4. When I was a teenager I had an old car with a loud knock. Dropped the oil pan and replaced all the bearings. In the drive way. When I got it back together the knock was still there. Turned out it was the exhaust pipe hitting the cross member. The engine mounts compress over time and the exhaust got closer to the cross member. After a couple of weeks there was a real engine knock. My 16 year old mechanical abilities were not as good as they are now. Probably put something in backwards. Had to find another 100 dollar car after that. And I still break things sometimes but that doesn't stop me from trying. I can fix that - I think
  5. Yep - Big cables, a really good 6 volt battery and a 6 volt positive ground alternator solved the power problems on the 47 P15. People don't notice the alternator - that looks normal to most people. But some do comment on the big cables.
  6. I always leave the hood up on the 47 P15 when I go to these gatherings. One of the special effects on this car is the custom fabricated stick used to hold the hood open?. One of the springs is missing. People will come by - look at that crusty old flat 6 engine and ask - does that run? I usually respond with "it is running". Or I'll tell them that I didn't push it there. Always good for a laugh. Then I walk around - reach in the window and hit the starter button and the old engine fires up in less than one revolution.
  7. I got a quote for $100 at the local glass company for new flat windshield glass. That's with me doing the work. I'll do the removal and probably have them do the install.
  8. Good point. But I don't drive the P15 at night. The head lights aren't bright enough for me. Maybe one day I'll fix that - maybe. I don't even like driving my modern cars at night any more.
  9. The blue dots are going on the car today. When I pulled the lights off the car I found rust behind them. Been treating, repairing and painting those areas. Painted the area behind the lights bright white for better reflection. I'll let everyone know if I get pulled over. If I can get someone to post bail for me ?
  10. Battery powered tools are great - now if I could just remember where I put those step drills?
  11. The 47 P15 has these tabs on the back seat. They bolt to the floor where those holes are shown. These tabs hold the upper part of the back seat in place.
  12. Local hardware stores usually have these bumpers in many different sizes. And no shipping charges.
  13. Yes - but I have the car registered as an antique and inspections are not required. This is a small town and I don't think they'll pull me over for that. If they do - I'll ask for forgiveness?
  14. When I first installed the alternator on the p15 it made a similar noise at low rpm. Called the alternator vendor and they said that it may be that the battery was low and the alternator was working extra hard. Couldn't find anything wrong so I decided to just drive it for a while and see what happened. The noise went away. It wasn't the battery being low because the battery has been low since then and it didn't make that noise again. Maybe the belt needed to wear in.
  15. 70 bucks?. I saw them for a hundred also
  16. It's been in the low 30's all day and raining here for the last couple of days and looks like it will continue like this for a couple more days. Being bored - I have been looking at old car parts on the net. I can't look at old car parts for this long and not buy something. I found a pair of original glass blue dot tail light lenses and got them. Picked up a third brake light glass because the price was too good to pass up. And I broke down and paid the price for a reproduction hood ornament. Problem now is that I may need to paint the car so it will match the nice new shinny hood ornament?
  17. They should all be full of oil.
  18. Solar lights will be the way to go so I don't have to run power out there. Some of those clamp on lights that are advertised as flag pole lights would probably work.
  19. Done.
  20. Just add a rope seat belt - keep it under 90 - it will be fine.
  21. The carbs on these old cars are easy to work on. Many times you can take one apart and clean it up without a kit and get the engine running much better. You could try that before you re route everything for the YF. I'm surprised that the dealer hasn't tried to get it running better. There could be something other than the carb making it run bad. You may want to have a compression check done.
  22. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. A bottle tree. But I'm going to call it a glass tree. It's going to have everything from bottles to glass vegetables on it when it's done. And yes that's a glass head in the middle. Those were popular in the 80's and 90's. The project started out with a piece of 2" pipe I had laying around. Then I got some 1/2" round rod and started cutting, bending and welding. It has 12 branches with 3 limbs per branch. It will have 60 or so pieces of glass on it when it's done. Some will be hanging from SS wire (the glass vegetables). More news latter
  23. We called them make out knobs. Or something like that. You could have your arm around your date and drive with the other hand.
  24. I keep starting fluid in my shop. I have an old Jeep that refuses to start if I let it sit too long. A shot to the air cleaner and it cranks right up. After that - no problem - starts every time. Let it sit for two or three weeks and it just wears the battery down trying to start it. I have replaced the ignition system, by passed the computer and rebuilt or replaced most of the fuel system. It's just an old worn out engine.
  25. After 40 years that's got to feel really good. I have a video from when I first got the 47 P15 stated. I would attach it but the file is too large. Had a smile on my face for days after that.
