dgrinnan Posted December 29, 2021 Report Posted December 29, 2021 (edited) My project, a 1947 Dodge WC was missing the fuel lines and fuel pump. I have purchased what is supposed to be an OEM fuel pump. I have two basic questions. I have not replaced fuel pump in years and am not sure about the setup. 1) I have seen pictures with the glass pointing up and pointing down. Mostly up. Is that the correct orientation? Clearly if the orientation is wrong the pump arm will not engage and operate. 2) Which is the inlet and which is the outlet? Is the line coming from the gas tank suppose to go to the connection closest to the engine(arrow 1) or under the glass dome(arrow 2)? Edited December 29, 2021 by dgrinnan Quote
pflaming Posted December 29, 2021 Report Posted December 29, 2021 Sorry, i cannot answer your question, but I would not install that on my car. I cant see how that upright bowl will collect any sentiment. I think you received the wrong pump. JMHO Quote
dgrinnan Posted December 29, 2021 Author Report Posted December 29, 2021 That was one of my two questions. It can be installed up or down. Are you saying the glass bowl should be down? 1 Quote
TodFitch Posted December 29, 2021 Report Posted December 29, 2021 Glass bowl down. Inlet is by the glass bowl, outlet is nearest the block. At least that is how the pump mounts on my old Plymouth’s engine. 1 Quote
dgrinnan Posted December 29, 2021 Author Report Posted December 29, 2021 Perfect. Thanks for the input. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 30, 2021 Report Posted December 30, 2021 (edited) And I believe you can clock the top if needed to fit in the space. Edited December 30, 2021 by Young Ed Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 30, 2021 Report Posted December 30, 2021 Yes, glass bowl should be hanging down. It is a sediment bowl, designed to separate any larger particles out of the fuel and collect them in the bowl. The inlet is at the sediment bowl and the outlet is above the pump body. 1 Quote

And whether it is over or under the cam. Those are the things that make it work. If the glass bowl is up when the arm is correctly located, you have the wrong pump. That procedure works on every engine, even those you may not be familiar with. One more thing to make installation easier, turn the engine so that the camshaft pump lobe is not pushing the arm. . If in doubt, you can feel it through the pump mounting hole. just turn it away from the arm. That way you don't have to fight the spring tension while lining up the bolts. 1 Quote
JBNeal Posted December 31, 2021 Report Posted December 31, 2021 Don't forget to dimple the ends of that pivot pin so it won't walk out of the casting...that's a nasty little timebomb these reproductions hide... Quote
