Bingster Posted September 2, 2017 Report Posted September 2, 2017 (edited) The nuts and bolts that I removed from my car are rusting. I know, don't say it. New fasteners or have them plated or let them rust? Edited September 2, 2017 by Bingster Quote
Bingster Posted September 2, 2017 Author Report Posted September 2, 2017 Okay, even new bolts with that gold color, the gold is coming off after a few weeks in the thermo housing. I've been looking at thread chaser prices. Can you buy them as you need them or a set? Where best prices? Quote
Branded Posted September 2, 2017 Report Posted September 2, 2017 You can buy thread chasers (taps and dies) at most any hardware store and auto parts stores. Yes, you can buy them individually Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 2, 2017 Report Posted September 2, 2017 Bolts and nuts made offshore are NO good. 1 Quote
Flatie46 Posted September 2, 2017 Report Posted September 2, 2017 I've never tried it but they say you can do zinc plating at home. Lots of youtube videos on it, I've meant to try it just never have. It's a thought anyway. Quote
Bingster Posted September 2, 2017 Author Report Posted September 2, 2017 Where can I get American made bolts and nuts? I've heard of guys cadmium plating the old fasteners. Quote
Branded Posted September 2, 2017 Report Posted September 2, 2017 You can buy plated fasteners, try Fastenal Quote
Andydodge Posted September 3, 2017 Report Posted September 3, 2017 Stainless bolts are fine for general sheetmetal use and low torque use but I wouldn't use them on anything that requires using a torque wrench, I haven't heard of high tensile stainless bolts tho' I suppose they maybe available..........andyd Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 3, 2017 Report Posted September 3, 2017 back when drawing a paycheck from Dept. of Defense, US Navy and applications at sea where torque and strength along with high anti corrosion properties were needed....the trade name Monel comes to mind...... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monel Quote

I would agree with you, most off the shelf ss is incredibly soft. But if you shop and order correct grade from a honest supplier, It is available and a bit costly. But a very good alternative in some situations. Quote
Flatie46 Posted September 4, 2017 Report Posted September 4, 2017 You could check out Garner Wescott. They do have nice high quality stuff but they are expensive. Quote
Matt Wilson Posted September 5, 2017 Report Posted September 5, 2017 A lot of aircraft bolts are made of A286 stainless steel, which can be had in high strengths. I'm sure they are not cheap, but I believe they would be a lot less than something like Monel metal. I'm not sure where you can get them, but I imagine a Google search would produce some results.
