pflaming Posted April 14, 2017 Report Posted April 14, 2017 Is the passenger number determined by seat belts? Or is three nationally the maximum? Quote
knuckleharley Posted April 14, 2017 Report Posted April 14, 2017 Seat belts are NOT required in vehicles manufactured prior to the national seat belt law,so the correct answer is "3 adults or the driver and however many children can fit on the remaining seat space." Quote
desoto1939 Posted April 14, 2017 Report Posted April 14, 2017 I would also say that two adults only if you have a floor shift and if a column shift then possibly 3 adults. If the othe passengers are small children then two children no matter what type of shift because of their size and not getting in the way of the shifter setup. Rich Hartung Quote
pflaming Posted April 14, 2017 Author Report Posted April 14, 2017 So then, my son, myself, and my two small grandchildren, ages 11 and 13 would be legal with the three on the tree? I can put in four belts. Quote
captden29 Posted April 14, 2017 Report Posted April 14, 2017 seat belt law passed in 1964, enforced on all 1965 cars and trucks . if you install seat belts on older cars, you now must use them or you can be ticketed. seat belts were almost always available on any older car as an option. there is an old film called "room to live" that is about the value of seat belts. if you watch it you will probably never drive unbelted again. it is not a gory film, but the way the trooper talks about it is incredible. I can put in four belts. I would thnk that you would be having a very tight front seat area. Since the boys are now over ten i would think that they are not little kids and then would need some room with the two adults in the fron seat also. Just my 2 cents on this topic. Rich Hartung Quote

desoto1939 Posted April 15, 2017 Report Posted April 15, 2017 remember that you are not permitted to have people sitting in the rear truckbed area when driving on the road, you will get a major fine from the police. Rich Hartung Quote
Mike36 Posted April 15, 2017 Report Posted April 15, 2017 What is that old truck the Beverly Hillbillys drove? Quote
DrDoctor Posted April 15, 2017 Report Posted April 15, 2017 The Beverly Hillbillies truck was actually built by the late-George Barris. I met him a few years ago, and he was talking about some of the cars he built. He built the original Batmobile out of a ‘57 Lincoln. I was working for a car showwhile I was in undergrad school, and another guy and I were driving one of the “copies” in frigid weather—we froze, ran out of gas, the battery failed, but we were young, and having the time of our lives. Anyway, the Beverly Hillbillies truck was actually built using on a 1921 Oldsmobile Model 43-A touring car with the back seat portion removed, and a flat bed made out of wood on the back. Quote

Rich Hartung Just looked up the California law, you can if you have suitable restraints installed. (Seatbelts) Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 15, 2017 Report Posted April 15, 2017 the Brat enjoyed a very good run with those jump seats installed.....however, I would suggest to anyone with a survivor model or have removed the seats for other application to inspect the mounting rails very carefully...their exposure to the element in a truck beds where water and dirt accumulates leads to rust, some cases very severe... As I recall from an article at the time, those seats were welded into/onto the bed and non-easily removable. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 15, 2017 Report Posted April 15, 2017 I am convinced....I got a set out of a Brat at the wrecking yard and as I did not carry a torch or grinder...as stated earlier..the rails were probably shot to the point they fell out...did not use the seats as intended and moved them on to another interested party....memory of them is only to the extent that they were pretty rusted up.... 1 Quote
