Hello all,

New in this neck of the woods. I just bought a 1935 Dodge Brothers 1 1/2 ton truck (dually). With a flathead 6 and a 4 speed.

not sure if it is all stalk parts. Was claimed to be. I am having a difficult time finding info.

First the engine numbers:

PI8*235432*

transmission numbers: (transmission seems to be two parts the back half seems to have it's ability to engage locked in one position.)

Warner Gear Co. T8-1L

connected to:

Warner Gear Co. Muncie L1

I use the truck for my business and most of the time doing 40 mph is fine but ever now and then I need to get on the main road an I would like to be able to get the truck up to 55 or 60.

I am wonder what this transmission set up is?

And how to repair it (manuals??) if I can find parts for this back half.

The T8? works fine.

Also wondering if it is possible to find a higher ring and pinion for the differential so that I don't need to change the whole back end.

Lot of questions about the new toy. Thanks for any info or directions on any of these questions.

Yikes! That thing sure is pretty! No wonder you bought it,and speaking for myself,I am very glad you chose to use it in your business and drive it around so other people can enjoy seeing it.

Engine is a 49 plymouth engine. Gets you a 218 over I believe the stock 201.

I have a 37 Dodge big truck with what is probably the original engine in it. If you want to go original and it is the same as the 35 engine,I can make you a deal on it. AFATG,I can make you a deal on the trans, too. I am never going to use either.

Consider them both to be rebuildable cores, not pieces you can just put in and go riding.

These guys might be able to help:

vanpeltsales.com

It almost looks like some sort of auxiliary transmission bolted to the back.

That sure is nice, post it on the "truck" forum so they can enjoy it too. Not many of them look at the "car" forum.

Can you give me your reference for this information so I can putt in the trucks log books? Thanks

That's an odd transmission front rear section box.

Never seen one like that.

Could be a Hi/Lo with a 3/4  speed box etc?

Is it all hooked up properly ....front  and rear shifter rods etc if any?

Not sure where you could find that written. There is a spotters guide on this site that may tell you a P18 is a 49 plymouth.

Unfortunately it is not hooked up at all. No Linkage and a piece of pipe has been crimped around the slide bar preventing it from shifting.

I'm wondering if that truck wasn't originally a firetruck, and that extra setup wasn't part of a power take off for the pump.  It may have been used to disengage the output from the back of the transmission to operate the pump.   Just guessing

The transmission is a Warner T9. Variants of the T9 were used on a variety of trucks from the early 30's through the 50's. You should find diagrams in older Chilton's manuals for trucks as well as proprietary (Ford, Studebaker, etc.) shop manuals.

It won't be practical to get higher ring and pinion sets for your rear end. The highest made (lowest numerically) were in the 4.5 range, and most are in the 5.n range.

Best bet for modern cruising is a Gear Vendors overdrive. Costly, but the best.

Second best is to replace the transmission with one that has an overdrive. Discussing that will open a can of worms, but I favor the A-833 or NVG4500 conversion.

Whatever you do, try to keep it as original as possible. What a great truck!

Hey also if anyone knows what the gear ratio should be on this truck?

1935 Dually

or if there would be numbers on the differential that would give the ratio?

About the most common was 5.23:1. There is no reliable identifier on the outside of the case to tell this. Jack up the rear, chalk mark the driveshaft and turn the rear wheel slowly for one revolution while counting the driveshaft revolutions.
