Anyone here running artillery wheels on a 49/50? one of the routes i'm looking into going. the ones ive found in the past were all 4" wide and i thoiught that was too thin. found a few places that make them in 5 or 6 wide but not sure how they'll look on my car. up until recently, like the last year or so, i haven't seen many 49/50s at shows or on the streets. they all have smoothies or stock wheels with or without caps.

Check out this thread http://p15-d24.com/topic/36703-show-your-wheels/?hl=%2Bshow+%2Byour+%2Bwheels maybe you can find a set of wheels you like

thanks Barabbas. i've been through this thread a few times. a lot of good looking rim/tire combos. i think i have it narrowed down to two styles that i want to go with but i have yet to see a 1950 with either style... maybe i'll start photoshopping.

here are some photoshop mock ups on a car that IS NOT my car. it was just a clean perfectly angle picture to use for a photoshop job. my car is jammed in my garage and getting a good pic of it will be a challenge for a while.

opinions?

yeah they're available chromed. they're reproductions, but that's alright. i can get them a little wider than actual vintage ones.

i think the chrome artillery were my least favorites, which is why i left them off the second set of photoshops. haha. thanks though.

here's a link to one of the places where i saw them.

I think the Astros or Supremes look good on 50's/early 60's cars. Artillery wheels, better on 30's/early 40's cars/trucks....painted same color as the vehicle. Chrome artillery wheels......no. Just my opinion & in the end, it's your car. Good luck....wheels can make or break the look.

I have 17-inch artillery wheels on my '47 Dodge truck.   They were on it when I got it.  I was told that these are hard to find, were military spec.  I don't know if what I was told is the case or not, but they are wider than 4 inches.

i don't think i want to go with 17s so i haven't really looked into the width of 17s. most of the old 15/16s i've found have been 4", though. there are a few 17s on craiglist local to me, but i think that might be too big.

I guess the big question here is are you looking to get wheels because someone else likes them?

Don i'm not looking for anyone to tell me what to buy for my car. i do like how you show your nuts, by the way. This thread started as me asking if anyone here used them on a car like mine, or similar, because i don't see them around. my thought was "why do i never see them, or why do i never see much of anything outside of painted stock wheels with or without caps and chrome smoothies on these cars?"

i've leaned toward the cragar ss since i got the car because i like that hot rod/lowrider hybrid look. the artilleries look "lowrider" to me, so if i were to go that route the "hot rod" would show up in other manifestations throughout the car. i like the feedback that Andydodge gave as far as being a hotrodder, and it captures that look, and Deathbound's opinions on mag wheels for 50/60s cars and artilleries on 30s/40s. the photoshopping actually gave me a visual i can work with before purchasing and i just think other people's opinions would help me look at it objectively rather than just, on impulse, running out and getting artilleries just because i like them and i found some that would fit.

i had a 1967 belvedere that i put G78 denmans with the 4 inch whitewall and a set of cragars on and it captured a lowrider hot rod look on a late "late 60s muscle car", but this is my first 1950 and i just haven't seen anyone do anything "different" here in southern california. the trends are real here and it's a bummer. i feel like everyone's cars look the same.

here's a pic of the belvedere.

If you are looking for wide whitewalls on the cheep end, here you go. ^_^

if that was a joke or a reference to something, sorry Don, but it was lost on me. i don't recall asking anything about whitewalls, or whitewalls on the cheap. i will be looking for whitewalls but not quite yet, and not into the porto-walls.

belvedere - you asked for opinions, here's mine. I don't like either of the 5 spoke wheels as they look like 60's vintage stuff, not 50's vintage. The artillery wheels are too old - 30's vintage. IMO, go with smoothies painted a complementary color, baby moons and trim rings.

thanks for your opinion!

i've gone back and forth with wanting original painted wheels. the car has chrome smoothies on it now with the caps taken off and the nuts showing. i've had a few failed attempts at buying some stock wheels on craigslist. if they would have come through i would have them on there now. i know they would be period correct and look "right", i just see them on all the 1950s aroud here and i'm looking for something different.

I thought all those wheel choices would have looked better without the whitewalls.  I find the whitewalls very distracting.

really? i think a 1.25" whitewall is JUST enough white for mag wheels and  i'd probably go with 3" if i went stock wheels though. whitewalls would be out if i chose to go with a 16 or 17 inch rim.

You asked! Not a fan of whitewalls or redlines or e raised white letters in most cases.

as another solicited opinion.....I could not see any upgrade in wheels till I see an upgrade in paint and body myself..but that is just me....if the picture of the rat rod black belvedere is what you have..then you opened the door to any WWW comment as the car clearly depicts them in place...you are getting just what you asked for....OPINIONS

i have the grey 50 plymouth. i sold the 67 "rat rod" but i liked the wide white wall mag wheel look on THAT car because it gave the car a muscle car lowrider hybrid look. i would like to achieve a similar look with the 1950 but since the body style is completely different, that exact combination won't work. i'm definitely looking to upgrade the wheels before body work and paint because the wheels are going to effect the way it drives more than paint. the tires it has are starting to not hold air anymore and i'm not going to buy tires for 14" rims that i'm not going to keep. so wheels first. then paint and body after i'm after i'm able to drive it. i wasn't disputing anyones opinions on white walls. just stating that my own opinion. i know i asked for opionions and i'm still welcoming them. i've just never heard anyone say that white walls were "too distracting".

my error on what car you own....the WWW are more to home on the 50's than any later mid sixtys cars...and with mags and such most folks find them just not acceptable ...mag and whites are both enhancers for sure but not commonly used together...WWW and wire sheels are more appropriate but then you have to be a wire wheel fan...two enhancers for single item are more than not be a detractor

if you looking for clean solid steel wheels for your car you can go as high as 89 and the last of the rear wheel drive Diplomats 5th Aves etc...you may need a 1/4 spacer for the fronts due to tie rod clearance issues with the bulging radial rubber.  (only item I needed to add using 89 5th Aves and wire baskets on my 49 Ply Cp)  Early Dakota rims also work and they can give you matching rims in different sizes...say 14's in the front with 15's in t he rear...and with deep dish rings and center caps are quite clean and attractive look..wheel from this periods forward start increasing their backset greatly in the positive direction...
