Ian Crombie UK Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 After sorting out a little Gas Blockage in the Carb,i've decided to look into a tune-up kit for the Dizzy. I have a P15 Sp.Dlx Club Cpe Someone years back changed the Dizzy to what i believe a 1951 Chrysler model Distibutor Number - 1343554 Rotor arm - Shurhit D-128 Cap - AL-67 Can anyone supply an interchange part nos for all these as i have found them individually on Ebay, but the postage via the UK for individual parts is hellava expensive. cheers Ian(UK) Quote
Ian Crombie UK Posted May 21, 2015 Author Report Posted May 21, 2015 Cheers Don?????? 217ci 6cyl is all i know...is it important to know? Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 A Chrysler distributor will not work in a Plymouth unless your Plymouth engine is a 25" block such as was used in Canadian models. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 buy your tune up kit per the data tag on the distributor itself...there is a difference in caps/rotors 1 Quote
Ian Crombie UK Posted May 21, 2015 Author Report Posted May 21, 2015 The part number which i have listed above is whats on the dizzy i have...all works just fine but i thought id replace the cap and rotor arm as i have no clue how long this has been in the car....when i google the numbers ,all i find is under Chrysler. All i'm after is a replacement of the cap and arm without paying heavy $$$ for the postage, thats why im looking for interchange numbers Quote
Ian Crombie UK Posted May 21, 2015 Author Report Posted May 21, 2015 Don...If i had done my homework last month ,i could have searched for the parts in Las vegas while on holiday Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 (edited) quick look found this...I have not got my book out at the minute to confirm any of this... 1343554 IAT-4003 & IAT 4001 Edited May 21, 2015 by Plymouthy Adams 1 Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted May 21, 2015 Report Posted May 21, 2015 then go with what you think is right..points distributor has no polarity as it is not but a switch to ground.. Quote
Andydodge Posted May 22, 2015 Report Posted May 22, 2015 Ian, what Don means is that the USA sourced/built Dodge & Plymouths used a 23" long version of the flathead 6 in 201,217 & 230 cubic inch capacity and the USA sourced/built De Soto & Chryslers used a 25" long version with 218, 228, 250 and 265 capacity.........BUT all Canadian built Mopars from the late 30's onwards used the 25" engine to simplify their production and we here in Oz got both with the 25" engine colloquially called the "Kew" due to the order & supply going thru the UK Kew plant........also when you refer to your "Chrysler" dissy be careful as whilst YOU may "know" it to be a "Chrysler" dissy, when talking to the Yanks you can inadvertently confuse the situation..........you need to work out EXACTLY what you have, not in the UK terminology but in the USA vernacular........lol.......you don't have wings but fenders etc.......lol..........regards, andyd 1 Quote

greg g Posted May 22, 2015 Report Posted May 22, 2015 The key number for cap and rotor is the one that Plymouthy posted. The one with the letters in it. Should be on the data plate on the distributor body. I have three distributors actually 4 counting the one in the car. One from a 46 Plymouth, one from a 50 dodge, one from a 56 Plymouth, and one from a 54 dodge pickup. They all will fit in the engine and work, but they all require different caps rotors and points. Body casting height, cap height, and notches for locating the cap to the body are all slightly different. The number with the letters is the one identifier that sorts the proper bits and pieces across the continuum of distributors that may have been fitted. 1 Quote
Ian Crombie UK Posted May 23, 2015 Author Report Posted May 23, 2015 This is what i got, how do i read this tag...if the pictures fire up Model no 1343554 IAT4011 9f830? Quote
greg g Posted May 23, 2015 Report Posted May 23, 2015 The IAT4011 number is what the part man will need to do the lookup. Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 23, 2015 Report Posted May 23, 2015 It is much easier to replace distributor internal parts with the distributor removed. Mark your rotor location so you can re-install the distributor correctly. Quote
Frank Elder Posted May 23, 2015 Report Posted May 23, 2015 Hello Ian, please look again at Don's last picture...at both condensers, see the small wire connected to the condenser? It can be frayed, broken, or corroded enough to give you fits when getting your car to run properly...it will ground out on the dizzy body and refuse to run. Just something to keep in your mind during your rebuild...good luck cousin. Quote
Ian Crombie UK Posted May 23, 2015 Author Report Posted May 23, 2015 Cheers to all for the posts and knowledge...time to get the books out me thinks but as for now, i'll carry on driving while the suns gonna shine. Ian Crombie UK Posted June 18, 2015 Author Report Posted June 18, 2015 Hi all again Sent off for the Tune-Up kits from a parts man...for...Distributor number 1AT4011......parts recieved but i believe he has sent the wrong bits He tells me the numbers are on the Dizzy Tag and thats what he sent...how do i read this Tag to clarify He sent part numbers Cap - AL-133 writen on the box but is actually(530225 for Studebaker).....The Carbon pin seems to get pushed home into the recess holder, gets jambed and the rotor contact dont seem to meet the HT stubs direct on Rotor - AL151 Condenser - ALC-118 Contact set - P85 which is in 2 parts and not one......when fited i dont seem to get a contact and engine dont fire over so i had to put the old one back in Help please....what parts do i need and how to read the Tag for numbers. New wires have also been done. Ian(UK) Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 (edited) looking in my Motors manual they list only Autolite distributors for the Plymouth, both Autolite and Delco for the Studebakers. IAT 4011 was Plymouth 51/52 and never used on Studebaker..the IAT series was however on the Studebaker...what internal parts will interchange between the IAT models I have no idea personally but refer tot he inter-sub book odds are they found the IAT series in an old parts book under the Stude as first cross reference and did not bother to consider the Plymouth application...you did mention the Plymouth part right? even the condensers are off a few microfarads in value between applications but that is so minute it is not to be considered a prob.. There is but one number for the distributor tag that will aide in parts for the IAT 4011, there is no separate list on the tag for each component. Again, per my book here at the house, there is no IAT 4011 used in a Studebaker...they used IAT 4001, IAT 4010 and IAT 4201 but the general similarities of the IAT should work between makes and models as confirmed by my INTER_SUB book the original points were two piece design and only the later one piece were offered as an advance model..and again...these had dual application per inter-sub book here at the house...look to my note at the bottom of this page... You could try returning those parts and try another supplier..being in Europe, have you considered the guy in Turkey distributing all original Mopar parts of the era... here is a link that may help http://hagensautoparts.com/plymouth/41-electrical/15409/ I got my parts OTC at Advance..I know this does not help you much...but you can source them online for part numbers...clue is to always look at the description as listed in the reference link above for the IAT application.. ONE MORE NOTE......in assembling the two part points that are more than not correct being root part 85...be careful you are not putting the contact lead on the ground side of the post and that it is actually on the insulator...if assembled to ground it will never fire..
