Don Coatney Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 As this is an old car forum why are advertisements showing up asking me to rate Obama, buy skin cream so I will have beautiful legs, Go to Kroger for my Oscar Meyer needs, See pictures of singles in my area ETC? I understand the advertisements popup from forum member key strokes but can they be filtered a bit better? I don't think this is the forum to discuss political views and my legs are already beautiful Quote
jcmiller Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 I think they are based on cookies that keep track of your browser history ... Quote
greg g Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 (edited) because you or some one on your browser or isp address is searching or purchasing those items. The ad bot that is associated with the advertiser site that GTK has subscribed to goes out and grabs those things from other activity on your browser. That is why I am looking at home brewing ads, TV stand ads, and since my wife is looking for a dress for a wedding coming up, dress, shoe and fashion ads. And step in bathtub come ons. Don Coatney Posted January 23, 2014 Author Report Posted January 23, 2014 I think it goes further than that. I, nor my wife have never looked at buying a new Nissan but that add is visible to me on this page right now. I, nor my wife have never looked for an Erecta Switch from Compac Engineering but that add is also visible to me on this page right now. I am inclined to believe that it also looks for key strokes from other forum members thinking that we all think alike and uses there key strokes to post adds on this page. Quote
Desotodav Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 As this is an old car forum why are advertisements showing up asking me to rate Obama, buy skin cream so I will have beautiful legs, ... my legs are already beautiful I don't know Don, I reckon they might have seen the attached photo of you recently and formed the opinion that your legs needed help... I say that you gotta give them credit for having that much faith in their product. I use a program called AdBlock, so I don't see any ads at all. The Adblock icon at the top of my screen is presently telling me that it is blocking 8 ads, Quote
P15-D24 Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 Couple things going on. Some ads are directly sold by me (I.E. Roberts, Andy Berbaum, etc. They are identified by p5-d24.ads.com in the lower corner. The other ads come from a service called Google Adsense. I have subscriber to their "automotive" thread hence they reason you see a mix of automotive based ads. Google also tracks your activity and will often display ads that are based on sites you have visited or searched. Quote
TodFitch Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 Which explains why I only see the site specific ones (Roberts, Bernbaum, etc.) as I have blocked Google AdSense. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 to some degree I do have to agree with Don that we here as members are to refrain from any expressing of political and religious views..yet this very minute I am requested to vote on the very merits of a politician headlining this very page...seems like a double standard..I know that software of this nature offsets the very operational cost of the forum...but surely we can find ads in harmony with the tone of the forum at large...there are filters for every and all things these days Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) Ok....first of all Don's legs are...indescribable....second, since I use google chrome, I googled adblock and found adblock plus for free and all the ads dissapeared. Man those things were annoying...was always afraid of clicking on some stupid $hit by accident that would derail my pc. Edited January 24, 2014 by Frank Elder Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 Now there are always drawbacks to everything........I just tried the quick reply and the quick edit, both were treated as ads or popups, and in order to post or edit I must use full answer or full editor. It's still worth it. Quote
