I have come to the point in my '46 Plymouth project that carpet is next and I am wondering if anyone has any suggesions on a good source of pre fitted carpet?    Stock Interiors .com seems interesting.   What do you think?

I may be all wet...but I never saw one come with that originally...Had to be a 'city' car to ever have that.  All the 'farm' vehicles ever had was a rubber mat for the whisk broom to de gunk for special occasions.  once saw some fuzzy floor mat things in one.  most of those were plain rubber to and got a quick dump when to many sand burs got carted in.

PLUS these cars were used as pickups in their lifetimes,,,lots of 'livestock' rode to market in the back seat  (seat being in or 'out')

However carpet would be a great addition to the concrete townie life we enjoy today.  Hope you can find an after market source  for one

Not a "city" car thing at all: At least through the 1930s and, I think, through the P15 era, the factory fitted rubber mats for the front seat and carpet for the rear seat.

Not sure if its simply how my Dad liked cars or not, but the '63 Plymouth I learned to drive on had rubber mats too. First car I had with front carpet was an '82 though I'm sure that it was optional, maybe even standard, on many makes prior to that.

I agree with Tod..........mat front, "horsehair" carpet in rear,  rubber mat in trunk.

However.......finding a N O S rubber mat for floor or trunk nowadays is a pretty tough trick.

Probably 30 years ago, I found a N O S front mat, still in box, at a swap meet.  It was kinda

old back then.....   Put it in the car and used it for several years until it began splitting due

to age.

So, now, I have carpet.  In my case, maroon, to match the interior.  I believe it's known as

"loop pile".    There is a place in Kansas City called National Fabric Company

that has all kinds of auto materials.       (901 S 7th St, Kansas City, KS 66105

(913) 281-1833)

So, I bought however many yards they deemed adequate, plus you will need some complimentary

color vinyl material to make edging.  Plus some felt type padding to go under it.

I took the stuff to a local one man upholstery shop and had him make up and fit the carpet for both

front, rear floors and trunk.  Been a while, but I think he charged me around $250 for labor.

He even made a place you can fold back the carpet right in front of the driver to access the

top of the master cylinder.

So......... although not original, carpet is the way to go now.  (in my humble opinion)

Bob T I will have to give this guy a call as I am needing carpet in my 48 sedan too. Looking at your carpet it looks like it has the foot rubber in the carpet too. Did he install this in the carpet or did it come with carpet already there?

I just checked out the website referred to in the original post.....here's a link for whoever is interested (for '35-'64 Plymouth-all models):http://www.stockinteriors.com/CutSewnCarpet.asp?Itemid=7461&MakeId=22&ModelId=546#details_box_holder

Also, for Chrysler & Dodge of various years....didn't see DeSoto on the list.

The heel protector square, vinyl  piece is sold separate......comes in various colors to match carpets.

Upholstery man sews/glues it in.

My clutch and brake pedal pads either came from someone on eBay or from a swap meet.

Not original style, of course.   At first I didn't like the nubby surface, but got used to it and

it's ok.  The thing on the accelerator pedal slips down over the pedal to protect carpet

from your heel.  Guess those things would be considered period accessories.....which I

like.

So, does that Stock Interiors company actually have/make rubber front floor mats?

If I recall Bob you used to have your pedal pads mounted fat sides facing horizontally not vertically? Or was that Norms Coupe who had them backwards?

So you like period accessories? I never would have guessed.

  • 2 months later...

I was looking at some auto carpet recently, and saw some burgundy color that I thought would look nice.  They also had black.  My wife thought that the interior should be coordinated with the paint color, but I told her that they didn't build them that way, at least not the carpet.

Has anyone put rubber mat back in the front, or just go with carpet all the way through?  Would black carpet be too dark?  (There is an outlet store near here that has pretty good prices, but not very many colors.)

You might try this site here, they hacw carpet kits for various cars.

http://www.carparts.com/

I might go with them when I am ready for carpet in my P-15.

I bought mine from stock interiors as well.  The quality was good and it came with the additional insulation the front mat and the heel pad.  The edges were sewn, but it wasn't a direct fit so I had to cut some of it to make it fit right.

I used the vinyl stair tread for sill plates and it covered up the edges well.

Seeing as I started this I should report that I bought a carpet from Stock Interiors.    I had to return it because the heel mat was out of place.    I'll be kind and say the fit was poor and after a week long fight it still isn't a good fit.    In hind sight I should have done it myself.   Hopefully someone makes a real prefit for a P15.

Yes, Don, I was the one who had the pedal pads going the "wrong way".   May have been how they were when I

bought the car.........been so long now I don't recall.

I had carpet put in the trunk, over insulation, then made my own side panels.  Not the greatest job, but not too bad.

Did that because I like to put various items in the trunk for car shows and just like the looks of it being "finished".
