pflaming Posted September 22, 2013 Report Posted September 22, 2013 I just installed a 'musical' canister in my truck which 'whistles' when the turn signals are on. The sound is very directional so it is very easy to 'point' in a easy listening direction. I am hard of hearing so it may be MUCH louder than what I hear. I have a Signal Stat 900 system. It is going to be a great help. Quote
busycoupe Posted September 22, 2013 Report Posted September 22, 2013 I've never heard of such a thing. Where did you get it? Is it a direct plug in replacement? Was it expensive? Dave Quote

GlennCraven Posted September 22, 2013 Report Posted September 22, 2013 (edited) I Googled this because I hadn't heard of them, either. There are some on eBay and at a LOT better prices than those vintage Yankee units. P.S. But I haven't noticed anything about sound in them. So I don't know if the sellers aren't selling the same thing, don't know what they're selling, or if I am clueless about what's being sold. Edited September 22, 2013 by GlennCraven Quote

The signal stat is much better than most of the cheapy poorly made turn signal units out there. They are heavy duty and will work on 6 12 or 24 volt. I have one in each of my old cars. Paul added a different style flasher to his that apparently sings to him. Quote

I guess we need for Paul to tell us what he added to the Signal Stat 900. Which is available on eBay. Quote

I guess I can see how you would read it that way if you weren't familiar with the signal stat before hand. FYI I got both of my signal stats right from napa. I got the basic ones in black but you can spend a little more and get chrome. I think they have other versions with more stuff built into them too like high beam controls. Quote
pflaming Posted September 22, 2013 Author Report Posted September 22, 2013 I put in a three prong signal flasher, with a beep sound. Came from MAC's Antique Auto Parts. Part # M3H - 178 - 1. Cost $30. Maybe that's expensive but it's a one time expense and I don' have a run down battery in the morning. This is a Ford product. Installation: three prongs, can't be more simple than that. Young Ed Posted September 22, 2013 Report Posted September 22, 2013 Paul I forget are you running 6v or 12? Quote
pflaming Posted September 22, 2013 Author Report Posted September 22, 2013 6 volt to match my flat head L 6. Was going to go 12 but it runs so nicely i'm not changing over, but then I'm not into radios, etc. The sound of the engine and the wind through the windows is music enough for me. 2 Quote

Paul , I am sure that you can find a place to wire your signal-stat so that it only gets power when your ignition switch is on . That way your battery can't go dead . If you have tried your flasher with a beep on the road , let us know if it is loud enough . I have hearing problems too . Quote

The trouble with that is then your 4way flashers will only work if you have the key on too. Which I guess might be the lesser of 2 evils.... Quote
pflaming Posted September 23, 2013 Author Report Posted September 23, 2013 I spent a couple of hours under the truck while it was on a lift. Discovered the shaft nut at the E-brake was loose, torqued it down. Found another incidental loose, oil leaking past the valve covers, but beyond that all is still secure. I changed the oil then took it for a four mile run a 65+ MPH. it runs nice and smooth without any vibration. I also used my new musical flasher and can easily pick up the sound which is akin to the sounds we hear when large equipment is in reverse. It's an intermittant sound and is NOT a piercing one. I'm very pleased. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 I have that same beeping flasher from MAC's in my truck. It's a bit loud for my taste, but I don't forget to turn off the turn signal either. Merle Quote
LAKOTA169 Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 In one of my modern cars, I put in a musical flasher. Got it from J C Whitney. It played "Love Me Tender". Would like to put one in the '37. I've done the "Old Fart" thing of driving a mile or so with the signal still flashing. I have one of the cheapy signals with the green light on the end of the stalk. During the day time you can't see it blinking. Quote

DJ194950 Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 Maybe add small pieces of sticky backed sound deadener a piece at a time until "tuned" to fit driving preferred loudness as tested. Still too loud add some more until you hear it without bothering you? A thought. Best Doug Quote
