Selling The P15...

A few people asked me if I was going to sell my old cars when we were having our son. I asked them why would I? Tim is right unless you trying to do major upgrades they cost very little to keep.

babies are great...and they are an expense..but they should not be a total sacrifice..this tells me that financially you are no where near prepared to be parents and more thought should have been put into family planning.  sounds harsh and rough..but while baby keeps momma occupied and such because of the "mothering instinct"  your car/truck can be a great outlet for you and maybe a release allowing you to keeping your sanity.  No one will fault you for spending a bit of time on a hobby...but then again please do not think I am saying full speed ahead and blow the salary on your project or neglect the child(ren)...learn moderation and balance in your life..you will later be able to demonstrate these same values to your children that hard work and good stewardship will allow room for many of life's pleasures..

No where did I say that an old car is as important as money to raise their child. If the original poster really needs the money then he should do what he feels right. What will he sell next time money gets tight? If I really got in a pinch I would sell my car or truck or both. I just don't understand the "oh baby is coming no more old car time" logic.

But the cost of raising a baby will take all the money you have and then some.........sell the car if that's what needs to be done, not everybody thinks an old car is as important as extra money to raise their child.

Because mommy is not on board with dads hobby.  After the child is grown there will still not be money for car hobby because by then the house will require redoing and all new rugs, drapes, and so on to make mommy happy.  You know that old saying "if mommy is not happy then no body is happy".  This might hit too close to home for some of you and others might think me a fool for making this statement but so be it,  I have observed both sides of the coin in my almost 77 years and experienced some of it myself.  To those of you who by luck chose correctly and got a mate that will support you in your hobby you are very lucky, keep her, treat her good because a good woman can be hard to find, some have to marry many times before they find success.

the point here is that matt already agreed to sell the car. going back on your word is not a good thing. that being said, if matt could have a conversation with the wife and get a new decision they would both be happy about, storing the car is a beter option in my book. the money you sell the car for will be gone quick as it is not all that much. however, when all is said and done, sticking to an agreement is important and a car is not worth giving up family happiness. capt den

Sorry Ed....it just didn't come out right...I will always pick my children first....the day my first born was delivered I realized that my personal needs don't matter anywhere near as much as my child's safety and well being.

If that means selling a car to make my wife happy.....so be it.....in the end its just a car, nothing more.

Everybody has a different opinion and outlook and it is nobodys place to tell another how to live there lives.

I can only tell my story. My wife and step kids always had a roof over there head, clothes on there back, and food on the table. I never had to sell my car, tools, guns, or anything else to make this happen. Sometimes I had to work at less than desirable jobs to make ends meet. My wife never had to sell her stuff to make this happen. We simply planned ahead for the lean times and reduced spending to match our budget. Hot dogs dont taste bad with enough mustard and ketchup.

Ok guys, this spurred a bigger conversation than I thought.  So the deal was I have to sell one of my old cars.  I have the 49 p15 and a 1960 VW ragtop.  The only reason I decided to sell the p15 is the bug is easier and cheaper to work on.  If I can't sell the p15 I will sell the bug and keep the Plymouth.  I honestly like the Plymouth more(when working).  The other thing is I was gonna make the bug a daily driver but the p15 I don't see that happening with the time I have to put into it.

Anyways, nice debate go on.  I agree, keep the wife happy but also don't just throw ur dreams away.  This was a carefully negotiated deal where I could keep 1, not bad.

So am I nuts for keeping the bug over p15?

Its called a BUG!!! Flick it off and keep the Plymouth!!!! Just work its budget at a slower pace and all things will work out just fine. Keep your wife happy and she needs to have the same attitude towards you, if thats accomplished the baby will be fine!!! Plus those little hands could come in handy in tight places!!!

Dreams shouldn't be for sale!!! Get some seat belts and a good babies seat for the Plymouth and the family heads for ice cream every Sunday afternoon!

Doc.

As for why he is selling the car you guys know everyone that might be interested in the car would as why is he selling it, I believe that might be why he said anything at all.

But he has given anyone on this site a chance to buy first, as he knows you for the most part would keep the car and treat it with respect.

We all do what we must with what we have.

God Bless the little one for the Father is taking this step for your care, and years from now you will set and tell of the one that got away and how proud you are of the keeper.

Just say in

Matt I would keep the P15 over the bug for the simple reason of space. It will be much easier to put a seatbelt in the back and take the family on a cruise.

more than one school of thought but expanding on Ed's observation..BUGs are also experiencing a rebirth at this time and their revolving popularity is now rising..the convertible is great for solo or evening cruise with the main squeeze..not so for sunbaking the heads of little ones tuck into the back seat..top down..room is a consideration in family cars..ease of getting in and out of car seat another plus...as the female part of her is 'real' you cannot go anywhere with less than three suitcases for an overnight...and I will remind you that yours is not amount the three..room is a big asset..so if a toss up between the two..my money would come from the bug....and I will admit I do like original convertible bugs..hard call I know..but if family is the 'need' for the selection....Plymouth stays..

Last night I attended the Murfreesboro Hot Rod Club cruise in. Close to 300 cars in attendence. Of those 300 there were two groups that had around 20 each. Corvettes, and Beatles. I do not recall ever seeing that many Bugs in one nest for a long time. As expected I had the only P-15 in attendence. My point is that Beatles apparently are back in demand. And that means they demand a hefty price.

Chance...looked at a ragtop today..nice car that has never been dinked with.....by decode it is 1 of 94 ever built with the power train...273 power pac, 4 speed floor shift with console and sure grip rear gear and Kelsey Hayes front discs...with the discs it may be even more rare..

ragtops are fun but are not now or ever been a family car...
