Plymouthy Adams Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 Don may get his warmth from a blended mix of fuel consumed in small sips throughout the day...and if it did turn cold..oh well..time for more fuel is all... Quote

Kudzuking Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 Does that rooster have one foot? or have i been in the hooch a little to early? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 Nice pics. Looks similar around here, but with more trees. Do you have drifting problems on the road with the wide open fields? By the way... I would think if you were still doing 50 Km/h past that sign it may be difficult to stop before you get to the garage. Merle Quote

Merle Hey Merle, yes it can drift like crazy, some areas have way more tress, around here and some less. That sign was made in 1971, it is a 50 mph sign, so 80 kph, better have good brakes.... Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 3, 2013 Author Report Posted January 3, 2013 Does that rooster have one foot? or have i been in the hooch a little to early? Nope, he has 2, just the way he is standing, it's warm in there, about 45f, insulated, little oil filled rad, but I do not let it get too warm in there, not good for the birds, if power went out.. BobT-47P15 Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 I see you have some "ballast" in the bed of the truck. I guess if you got stuck, you could motor on home for a tow vehicle. Quote
54Illinois Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 Hey we are getting eggs in this cold too! No heat or light in their coop... Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 4, 2013 Author Report Posted January 4, 2013 (edited) I see you have some "ballast" in the bed of the truck. I guess if you got stuck, you could motor on home for a tow vehicle. Hey Bob, there's 2 back there, CRF 80, and the CRF 50, the 150 is in the shed, rode the 80 the other day, on snow......yeeeeehaaaaaa Hey we are getting eggs in this cold too! No heat or light in their coop... Nice, my eggs are smaller being Bantams, my coop is heated a bit, they are small birds, and we can get -0 to -40 every winter, just mild today at 25 above, unusual for us, normal low is -10, normal high is 10f, we are 200 miles north of Fargo ND. The bantams are fun, gonna get 2 or 3 barred rock hens for bigger eggs, and gotta build a run for my coop too, cannot free range too many predators around here.... bantam eggs, and extra large leghorn egg to compare Edited January 4, 2013 by Rockwood Quote
T120 Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 ...Nice to crack a farm fresh egg in the frying pan -the yolk has some colour and the white holds together ,rather than spread all over the pan. Quote
54Illinois Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 That is good you use the heat. If you can get the sex links, they lay the biggest eggs I have seen. Double yolks too! Here is our Barred Rock "Tux." We also keep honeybees as well...80lbs. of honey this season! Quote

I have heard the Sex Link are good birds, will look at thse or Barred Plymouth Rocks, I want large to extra large brown eggs. I only want 2-4 hens, going to get pullets, and introduce them to the bantams, should go well with the roosters at least, and being bigger hens, should go not bad with the bantam hens. I fgiure if I have enough hens to supply our egg needs, that should be enough. Lots of bees being raised around here, some as close as right behind my property Quote
Scruffy49 Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 Can't go wrong with Barred Rocks or Buff Orpingtons, they did fine in the snow in the Cascades when we lived in WA. Eggs all year, heat and light in the coop was a red incubator bulb in the winter. Both breeds will eat ANYTHING... Quote

Hi, I figure that too, I have a tiny 600 watt oil rad heater, and a hanging brooder heatlamp, for severe cold nights. Tonight it is just the oil rad heater set on low, and it is 40 inside the coop. 55 Fargo Posted January 4, 2013 Author Report Posted January 4, 2013 Sure like your gas prices Fred! Hey Bob, I know you live close to Canada, and probably know our gas is sold in litres.... 3.85 X $1.05, gives the price per US gallon.... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 bit more than the 2.83 that I paid per gallon when I filled the van last week... Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 bit more than the 2.83 that I paid per gallon when I filled the van last week... That's the lowest I've seen or heard about in a long time. We're around 3.17 - 3.20 right now. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 Merle I saw 2.89 on my way home yesterday. Gotta make sure all the Minnesotans can drive to Green Bay to watch the pack lose again. Quote
