BobT-47P15 Posted December 7, 2012 Report Posted December 7, 2012 Does anyone have handy the dimensions of a P15 gas tank (length, width and depth)? I was looking this morning at a catalog of replacement gas tanks at O'Reilly Auto. They have some listed (and have pictures) for various makes of cars - but, of course, nothing old as late 40s. I can't measure mine since the car isn't here.....and the parts and repair manuals didn't give dimensions.......only said capacity 17 gallons. Some new tanks might be useable with slight remodeling for placement of center float hole and revising the filler neck a bit. Tank from a 47 coupe............. Here's one on their list that might work.........30 1/4 x 23 1/2 x 7 1/2......17 GAL...don't know what specific vehicle it fits. Was just guessing while at the store. Maybe not as long. COST $314.99 Quote
mrwrstory Posted December 7, 2012 Report Posted December 7, 2012 I assume you know about "Tanks". It's a hot rod aftermarket co. Also there's the aftermarket resto companies that have product specific to a particular car. Certainly no Plymouth stuff but a 40's Chev or Ford might work as all cars of a similar era tend to be configured in a similar way. Obviously, you'd need to resolve the sender/gauge issue which was a challenge for me. Check this catalog http://www.truckandcarshop.com/ Quote
james curl Posted December 7, 2012 Report Posted December 7, 2012 Tanks new add in this months Street Rodder, page 17 lists a tank and picture for 41-48 Dodge & Plymouth at $215.00. It is 30" x 16" x 8" and the part # is 48DP-A and it is steel. Quote

greg g Posted December 7, 2012 Report Posted December 7, 2012 (edited) I was just under my car the other day as the temporary gas tank repair I made a year ago finally gave way. So I will also be in te market for a tank. from looking at the stock tank, it seems that the way the filler fits into the tank is an improtant consideration as a tank like the chevy one pictured the inlet may interfere withthe frame. I was told by some one they used a tank listed for a 46 through 48 Ford, but the sending unit hole is in a different position from the MOPAR locations. I think the one above looks like it would be the trick despite its slightly odd appearence. here is ont ford unit listed by Speeday motors Edited December 7, 2012 by greg g Quote
mrwrstory Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 (edited) The Chevy tank sending unit greatly resembles a P15 item......$35 Bob, the Chevy electrics are waaaay diff. from the Plymouth's. I have a Chevy tank and new sending unit in my car but I had to resort to a Chevy gauge mounted seperately. I'm hoping to mount a Chevy mechanism behind the Plymouth gauge face some day. You might get by with the Plymouth sender if you can figger a way to mount it on/in the tank. Edited December 8, 2012 by mrwrstory Quote
Young Ed Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Bill isnt that a much later chevy tank you are using? I have a couple p15 tanks sitting here I can measure for someone. Quote
mrwrstory Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Bill isnt that a much later chevy tank you are using? Yes, mine is a later tank but the point I wanted to make is, 'tho the Chevy sending unit looks similar, the circuitry to make the gauge work is diff. If you could fit the Plymouth sending unit into the Chevy tank, I think you're in business. Quote
Robert Horne Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Check out Jeep tanks on ebay. About $100 new. Some are 20 gal, some are 13 gal......and others. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 8, 2012 Author Report Posted December 8, 2012 Bill.....I didn't realize the Chevy float works different from Mopar.....so I can see that won't be workable then. I have a good Plymouth float, new a few years ago. Ed, if you can measure a tank it would be helpful. The O'Reilly book lists the tanks by measurement, as well as by vehicle they fit. Saw a couple O'Reilly reps at a car show near here in October, they had brochures about gas tanks. That's why I went by the store to check further. It would be a really good thing if someone could find a replacement tank for our old Mopars that resembles the original in construction and has the float hole and filler neck in needed positions. I wouldn't care what brand vehicle it came from if it was useable. And.....another question......did the shape and layout of tanks change much from the 40s up thru the mid 50s? Quote
RobertKB Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 There have been several threads in the past on replacement tanks. I know Rockwood put a new tank under his Chrysler without a lot of trouble. Maybe try the search function. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Tanks INC. seems to be the tank most use..while not an eact duplicate of the original (pinch lines) supposeldy a rather simple bolt in.. Quote

I have an old 57 Chevy tank that measures up pretty well to my P-15. I want to have dual exhaust without interference with my tank. I plan on cutting a hole in the top of the tank for the stock P-15 sender and using the Chev sender less the float to pick up the fuel. The tank on the Chev is 8" deep same as the P-15 and the fuel inlet is on the same side as the P-15. Just need some 2" fuel hose and a 2" to 2 1/4 adaper to hook up my stock inlet at the fender. I like the 57 Chev over the 55 and 56 tanks because of the vent that's the only difference between the tanks. Just my two cents. Quote

It is 30" x 16" x 8" and the part # is 48DP-A and it is steel. I used this very tank in my 47 Chrysler, although it is not exactly as stock, it was a nice easy fit, with some minor modification. The tank is well made, priced right. I am very happy with it, and no issues with the gas line ferrule to deal with.... can post pics if you want Bob T. http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=226/category_id=68/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd226.htm Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 15, 2012 Author Report Posted December 15, 2012 Thanks everyone for the helpful input. I think it's time I gotta do something about the tank on the convert. And son in law Dale's coupe definitely needs a new tank. He did some exterior repair on his with fiberglass but new additional things kept turning up. His coupe is currently on the back burner as he's been doing repairs on the convert.....but it's been slowed because of various work and health matters. Did get old roof cut off and new one started in place....... Quote
