pflaming Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 I always wondered why there were two horizontal bars with choices: FAQ, SEARCH, etc. I just discovered that if you select forum on the top bar you will return to the forum you were last in but if you select forum on the bottom bar you will get a choice: P15/D24 or Pilot-House. Always something to learn. Those Giants were HOT, HOT, HOT. Some GREAT defense plays last night. I was pulling for Detroit. Next year! Quote
ggdad1951 Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 I use the bread crumb trail on top generally for navigation Quote
DJ194950 Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 You were rooting for detroit?? What are you a yankee transplant? At least you could root for L.A. Oh, thats right they didn,t make the playoffs!! Quote
John-T-53 Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 Until the A's win it, I'm on the Giants bandwagon. Looking forward to the celebratory parade in SF this week! Too bad they had a bunch of fires and vandalism last night, though. At least it didn't get as bad as Philly had it when they won. Quote
48Dodger Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 Of course I'm an A's fan....but when their season ends....I go with the team closest to the west.......nice job Giants. 48D Quote
pflaming Posted October 30, 2012 Author Report Posted October 30, 2012 I was an A's fan when Billy Martin was there. I think they were the first team to break the blue, red, black, white color code when they went green and yellow. They were also the first team to allow mustaches, I think they had a good pitcher with handle bars. I think they also tried yellow baseballs. I need to see Money Ball, evidently a good movie. Quote
48Dodger Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 In 68 when they moved from Kansas, they atempted to break a lot of the norms....you're right about the yellow ball and facial hair. The biggest thing they brought to the game was the set-up man and closer....otherwise starting pitchers were generally thought to at least finish a game or be relieved if not possible. Everyone follows that strategy now. 48D Quote
pflaming Posted October 30, 2012 Author Report Posted October 30, 2012 Is that what is now referred to as "Billy Ball"? Quote
48Dodger Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 Nah....Billyball is agressive base running...extra bases, stealing, etc....he did that with every team he managed. 48D Quote
tom'sB2B Posted October 31, 2012 Report Posted October 31, 2012 I wish I could make it up to the parade today. It was a fantastic season. I watched or listened to every game. They are really a fun and exicting team to follow. Great fielding, Great pitching and good old school small ball. Can't wait till next season Quote
48Dodger Posted October 31, 2012 Report Posted October 31, 2012 For me the best part was the redemption of Zito and Panda......both were none factors for the 2010 WS.....but for 2012, they together put on the most exciting 1st game of a WS I've seen in long time. 48D http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=25448509&c_id=mlb&topic_id=vtp_manager_postgame http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=25448507&c_id=mlb Quote

If I remember correctly, wasn't the pitcher Raleigh Fingers? I could be sooo wrong, but this sticks in my noggin. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 Rollie Fingers started out with the A's, then went to the Padres, and ended up his career with the Brewers. That's how I remember him. In fact he still does a lot of things with the Brewers club. Quote
48Dodger Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 Reggie Jackson showed up with a beard pre season in 72. The A's, like many teams at that time, had a rule against facial hair. Rollie and other players let their facial hair grow out in protest thinking the management would force everyone to shave by the regular season. The GM saw a good thing and told players whoever grew the best mustache by opening day would win a bonus. Rollie won by being over the top with his classic hande bar stash. Most kept the them through the whole season. He played for other teams like Merle said, but turned down the REDs offer to play because the stash would have to go. His number is retired by the A's and Brewers. 48D Quote
Merle Coggins Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 He still has the stash to this day, although it's toned down a little. He was in town recently to honor "Mr Baseball", Bob Uecker when they unveiled his statue at Miller Park. Quote
