42coupeguy Posted October 16, 2012 Report Posted October 16, 2012 (edited) Just bought my first coupe that wasn't a Mustang. Ive always wanted one. Looking forward to bringing it back to life. Bought it from the son ,who got it from his dad , who bought it in Cal. back in 1960. Its been sitting under a lean shed scence in the early 80's. Spent the weekend getting it running and looking up info on the car. Pulled the plugs, lubed heads, cleaned points, by passed the fuel tanks and she fired up. Now I have to rebuild the brakes and I think I can putt around the yard. I know its pre-war and 1/2 year production. But would like more info, background and values on the 42's if any one can help. Also whats a good parts catalog company? I just cant seem to google very much info on them. All the body parts are great no rust and just a few little pings , will have to patch the floor pans. lots of surface rust on the undercariage. Thanks for any help. BobT-47P15 Posted October 16, 2012 Report Posted October 16, 2012 Hello---welcome from Joplin, MO. You'll have a nifty and pretty rare car when you get done. There are usually some 42 parts on eBay..........here's a link: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1311&_nkw=1942+plymouth&_sacat=10073&_from=R40 Although the 42s look a lot like the 46-48 models, very few things will interchange. That part under the front bumper is certainly unique. Here's a pic showing that feature, lifted off the net............. Is yours the one seat business or 2 seat club coupe?? At the top of this forum is a section containing reference material, some suppliers, and other helpful stuff......try to read thru that area to see what you can learn. If you need new gauges (gas, oil,tc) I've discovered you can use a 46-48 gauge and simply swap in the copper colored 42 face. So---have fun with your new ride. Quote
Andydodge Posted October 16, 2012 Report Posted October 16, 2012 Bob, it looks like its the Club Coupe, 1st year for that............nice car...andyd Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted October 16, 2012 Report Posted October 16, 2012 Welcome! You've certainly picked the right forum, a wealth of knowledge (and opinions, gotta love 'em) herein that I've found more helpful than any place, or anything else I've tried. Take some time to explore here, there's technical archives, pot-hole remedies, links to virtually anything you need, etc. Just about every topic has been covered at one time or another, so starting with a search is often the way to go. 42coupeguy Posted October 16, 2012 Author Report Posted October 16, 2012 Thanks for the nice comments, It is a special deluxe club coupe , ran the vin# and it was made in CA. I found that metal trim piece that fits under the front bumper in the trunk. I was wondering where it went:) The interior cleaned up nice I'll post some pics later. Some of what I've learned so far... 1 - 1/2 lug bolts right thread, 1/2 left thread...!!! also what positive ground means....lol Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 16, 2012 Report Posted October 16, 2012 means the positive side of the battery is the one going to ground..and the negative will be the "live wire" Quote
mrwrstory Posted October 16, 2012 Report Posted October 16, 2012 Spectacular find! You are very, veeeery fortunate. I endorse everything previous notes have said about the quality and support of this form. Keep us posted. And, we really like pictures. Quote
greg g Posted October 16, 2012 Report Posted October 16, 2012 The 42's are more related to the p15 series, but since the war years intervined, the line is blurred. The body stampings are closer to 46 than 41. I believe the 218 was introduced in the 42. Welcome, and good luck with your project. Quote
Brandon S Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Awesome car- better shape than when I picked mine up in Apr '12. Got my grill airflow pannel from Collectors Auto Supply along with some other hard-to-find parts. They're a little slow and not cheap but beggars can't be coosers. I went the cheap route and painted it olive drab! Quote
John Reddie Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Hello and welcome, Great find. I love the '42 models, especially the club coupes like yours. It is nice that you were able to get it started. Enjoy it. John R Quote
John Reddie Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Is the "T" shaped slot in the center of the front bumper for a hand crank or for a bracket? John R Quote
