Bingster Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 I'm ready to send off my brake cylinders and master cylinder for re-sleeving on my '47 Desoto, and would like some imput as to the better shops. I know there is Apple and Sierra that have had some good reviews here. But Sierra seemed to say that I had to supply the rebuild kits. I would like them sent back ready to mount and have them supply all parts. Input??? Quote
TodFitch Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 Never occurred to me that the re-sleeving company would also install the rebuild kit... As far as I know Sierra just does re-sleeving and the work Joe did for me was outstanding. Installing the rebuild kit acquired elsewhere while the re-sleeving was in progress only takes a couple of minutes per cylinder so I did not consider that an issue. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 I use www.brakeplace.com Great guys I believe they do send the wheel cylinders back rebuilt. Quote
1940plymouth Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 I used White Post Restorations, both the wheel cylinders and Master cylinder came back rebuilt Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 whether you build them or they build them I cannot see why you would need to supply the kit...now if they build them you will have to more than not supply the piston and they may want to refinish the pins....but push come to shove, you or they, the cylinder is supposedly sleeved to stock specs and therefore what difference does it make Quote
deathbound Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 I use www.brakeplace.com Great guys I believe they do send the wheel cylinders back rebuilt. Ditto.....I've used them & they will sell you the wheel cylinder kits also. About 1 week turn-a-round, door to door. Very reasonably priced also. Quote
oldodge41 Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 I used http://www.hagensautoparts.com/ for my front cylinders. Cylinders were supplied rebuilt and then I sent in my cores. Quote
Tim Keith Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Very reasonably priced also. What is a ball park cost for the service? Quote
deathbound Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 What is a ball park cost for the service? $75 per wheel cylinder with stainless stepped bore sleeves. I sent my original "Made in USA" wheel cylinders. Thought it was abetter deal than around $50 for a foreign made wheel cylinder that doesn't have either brass or stainless to begin with. I think the wheel cylinder kits were about $10. Figure in shipping costs-about $11 for me using a USPS flat rate priority box. Quote

I install my own kits, thats the easy part. You won't be disappointed with the quality of his work. Call him with any questions you may have, allow extra time, he is very detailed. http://www.brakecylinder.com/ Quote
Tim Keith Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 Has anyone used these wheel cylinders ? The seller claims that they are new. http://tinyurl.com/7edt3hb Someone told me to just use new cylinders and silicon brake fluid. He said that the silicon fluid won't absorb humidity and won't rust the brake system. Quote
jcmiller Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Here are some prices and info I collected when researching this: Apple: uses brass; $50 to resleeve WC and $80 for MC; prices are $85 and 175 for complete rebuilds. Hagen's: stainless; $60 to resleeve and rebuild WC and $125 to resleeve and rebuild MC. Just resleeving is about $20 less for WC. Not sure about MC. Kits are $12 and $26. Don't repaint but "look like new" when done. No apparent written guarantee. Sierra: brass; $60 for WC and $100 for MC. This is resleeving only and they don't do full rebuilds. 10-yr warranty. White Post: brass; $80 for WC and $175 for MC. This is full resleeve and rebuild. Lifetime warranty. They use an iron gray baked epoxy to paint. I was drawn to White Post because of full service and guarantee, but went with Hagen's because my wheel cylinders have two bore sizes. White Post wanted $120 for that instead of usual $80 and Hagen's price didn't change. I could not justify an additional $240. My parts are at Hagen's right now so can't vouch for final product yet.
