I know the old guys are going to yell at me for not doing a search but I did a search for "plugs" and every where a plug was mentioned the entire thread came up. Remove Plugs, check plugs, new plugs etc. But what I want to know is what kind of plug. My auto parts store always gives me what ever is recommended for a 56 Plymouth. I need to get plugs, points, condenser, rotor, cap - right now it's going to be for a 56 - will that work?

In my search all I found was Autolite 306. I was hoping for Champion.

thanks

nobody said anything about Autolite 303 - which is all he had. He had only 1 Champion plug. I guess I can take back the Autolite.

in the x reference it didn't mention 303 at all.

now I am confused.

I did get the points and condenser and he ordered the cap and rotor.

The engine has just been rebuilt and I don't really know the difference between hot and cold plugs.

most plymouth peop,e dont go for champions. i wondered why. i had a new set of champs and a new set of autolites...tried them both one saturday. now i know.! the champions didnt respond as well, and a bit harder starting, but maily i tested the spark against the head and autolite was a bright blue spark...the champion a smaller orange. i went with the autolites.

Assuming they are going on a 56 Plymouth I don't see why not. I'm not even sure what this question means.

If you want to use OEM parts, Chrysler always used Autolite so far as I know. You could just order the parts from your local Chrysler dealer if you want to be sure you get the right thing.

Spark plug 6 cyl 1946 -56 Plymouth, Autolite AR-80

Plymouth 1956 6 cyl distributor, points 1343 581 regular, 2084 075 heavy duty. Dist cap 2084 654, Rotor 1343 587, condenser 1818 757.

These are from a Chryco parts catalog of about 1964. See if your local Chrysler dealer can get the exact factory parts you need.

I was a Champion person for year but I am running AC 45 and they work well and the car starts much easier and quicker withthe AC than the Champs.

Thank you all - I'm sticking with Autolite.

I was checking the spark on the old plug and it was a weak yellow.

Thank you again if for nothing else just peace of mind.

Refine your search. If you were searching for Champion sparkplug try a search for "Champion sparkplug". I just did and got 3 hits.

You must order distributor parts by specific distributor number, there are at least three different dist used and they require specific cap points and cap by application. Thise numbers wit begin with IAT, IGS, or similar. You will need to pull the dist to see the number tamped on the information tag onthe dist body.

You should pull the dist to do a proper job of replacing the internal parts, as you can see what your are doing

Good luck getting a good set of points, most of them are offshore crap with cheap rubbing block, tuna can contacts and no cam lube provision. Also very floppy springs.

seems you have been recommeded off champions from several sources do you not take that as a hint??? By the way the proper Champion plug for normal heat range is a J8.

your autolite number is correct, the AC plug is 45, there is also a Bosche crossover but I don't have it.

The 56 distributor which I have but am not running is different from the dist from my 46 engine. The 54 truck distributor that I am running is different from those other two so the dist number is a must to get orrect pieces. They are interchangable, as a unit, but not the same.

I have had four fail where the ceramic insulator separated from the outside steel ring while in service.

I went to my local auto parts store. New kid. Looked up a number for rotor, cap, points. I got home and they were the wrong ones.

As suggested I took the dist out and took it with me to the store. The old guy behind the counter just went over picked up dist cap and it fit. You can't get anything by the old guys.

While I was changing the cap I noticed that my friends that were helping me put the wires in wrong. We couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start. It was one of those slap your forehead moments. The guys like to help me - gets them out of the house - but you've got to double check their work. Free help - you get what you pay for.

So now I'm ready to roll with new points, plugs, cond, rotor, cap, plug wires. There is probably something I missed but I'll find it later.

That champion plug is scary looking. I just took out a set with 17K miles on them. They looked fine but the outside was crusty looking so I changed them just for looks. Put another set of champs right back in.

Back in the 70's I was working on a dragracing 10 second Cuda. We were getting free sparkplugs from Champion, and replaced them every time we took it to the track. When they stopped giving them to us we switched to Autolites and usually ran them for a couple of months before we would pull them out.
