you (and now I) have probably about as close as anyone!

The red I mixed for you is extremely close if not exact. I want to do a cross reference on his red and the New Holland red that was sprayed on that big flatbed to see how close they match in formula. If I can come up with modern formulas for these old colors, it may help someone out that's also restoring to color correct. I've got a green panel I'm going to try to duplicate next.

hmm, the only number i can find on the dizzy is on the little red and silver tag it reads "part number 274116" is this the number i need?

oh and the radio seems to have its own speaker, the sound isnt coming from the speaker cover on the pass side of the dash its coming from the radio. its a Firestone radio.

That same red and silver tag should have a dist #. All I've ever seen have a few letters followed by 4#s

If you're going to put points cap etc in it you might as well pull the dist now and make sure you get the correct parts. Then you can install all the new stuff and make sure everything is right. After sitting a long time you might find the mechanical advance weights are stuck.

hmm how hard is it to retime one of these old trucks? is it the same as a newer engine? not sure i wanna pull the dizzy out now until i know it will run cause if i dont get it back in right i might never get it to fire.

Its the same as any other flathead. Pay attention to where the rotor is pointed and you'll be able to put the dist back in right. They only go 2 ways.

time to buy the repair manual or hire a professional...

My understanding is the dist. will only go in two ways, where it's at or 180 degrees or half a turn off. Pull the cap off, mark where the rotor is pointing and where the base of the dist goes into the block. That part will turn so you need a mark on the block and a corresponmding one on the dist. Pull the dist out, do your inspection, install your new parts and put the dist back in the block, lining up the marks at the base and the rotor position. As long as you don't turn the motor over while the dist is out, you're golden. If by chance you do turn it over, don't panic. We can guide you through that as well.

Tim's recommendation on a repair manual is spot on. It's a good reference for the professional if you find you need to hire one.

sorry if i come off as a complete moron, im not, im just asking stupid questions so i know i wont F something up. id rather know what im doing than have to do it all blind. i was fairly sure the dizzy would only go in 2 ways. i think im gonna pull it this weekend and check it all out. the carb kit is supposed to be here on friday so im getting a little anxious for that.

what year did they switch from having positive ground? i know the 39 and 45 i parted out were both positive ground and this truck is normal.

That truck should also be positive ground. Mopar didn't switch until 12v came along.

decode the serial number and/or post a better picture of the dash showing the center. It's a 50-53 I'd say.

The "thing" is not a 53. Thats for sure. I'd say a 51 because of the center cast front "Job Rated" grille piece. You should be able to get the proper year of production through the serial number, though sometimes 1951-2 are combined.

Your truck "thing" :D appears to be a 1951 Detriot built truck. It has the 236 ci. engine in er and is a beautiful 1-1/2 tonner!

why thank you for naming her:D, and giving me all the great info. where do you go to look up all that stuff?

so the carb is rebuilt, govenor cleaned up, air cleaner washed out, and dizzy rebuilt. alls i got to do now is get a 6volt battery and flush out the fuel system. thinkin i might pull the starter tommorrow and clean it up inside aswell. im so excited to see if shes gonna run. :D:D

Posted

well, SHE RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i finally got her to wake up from her 30 or 40 year slumber. had to rebuild the carb, dizzy and clean up the starter and fuel system, but she purrs like a big fat kitty with no muffler. but, now i need a radiator, when i started pouring in the coolant it started running out on my boots. upon further inspection i found one more bullet hole to go along with the ones in the windshield. it goes right throught the grille next to the dodge emblem into the radiator and into the fan shroud. so needless to say i can let her run for very long but she does runs.

i want to thank everyone who posted in this thread helping me learn about this great peice of dodge history, pat yourselves on the back because you too help save one more from the scrap heap. :D:D

so on to my next set of questions. what radiators are compatible with the ton and half trucks, and where is the best place to get the rubber for the windshield and back glass?
