Why didn't you paint the innser side of the backer plate?

Possibly replacing them with 10" ones for bigger brakes.

Here I was thinking you left it that way just to get a rise........:)

So I should have said I wanted to retain the patina....

Well that is the final goal of this build. I am preserving the undersides etc. but have no intention to paint the exterior. This is the front clip I'm about to buy back for it.

Take advantage of this nice fall weather in your outside "shop". Won't be many of these days left.

Since we are considering moving sometime in the next year I'm hurrying to get everything as attached and mobile as possible!

Did battle with the cowl vent today. It almost won! Check out how bad the screws are.

Then when I got the vent out and fought with the other two screws I decided to clean the lid a little. Wiped off the fungus and hit it with a little cleaner wax.

I noticed in one of your pictures it appears there is a hole to access the fuel tank sending unit?  Is this something the factory did, or was it done by a PO?  I don't remember seeing that on mine.

That was a running change very late in the 39-47 series. That truck also has the serial number take on the drivers side rather than the passenger side.

Hey Ed J

I am not quite sure if we wrote about a patina finish some months ago .. (PN)
Three years ago I did a similar resoration on my 1939 PT81. I did not want to destroy the patina (the original door inscription out of the 40s was still partially readable), but I wanted to protect the sheet metal to continue to rust.
Underneath everything is "new" - removed dirt, rests of colour, rust ... rust primed, painted, sealed.

The more intersting thing was how to conserve the outside surface. My intention was to conserve it in a way that it can not be seen at once. Oil treatment has to be done periodically and is too glossy for my taste. Also I have read, that clearcoat might flake off because the metall is rusting further under the clearcoat. I did some research ...
In the end I cleaned the surface with a mild alcohol decreaser, treated the complete sheet metall parts with Ovatrol rust protection oil, and painted it allover with a mat polyurthane clear coat (very restistant made for military purpose). The rusted parts got a brown colour like a chestnut (hope it can be seen on the pictures below).
I am still very happy with the result ! Nobody has ever seen that it is painted, no further rust, no flake off.

Looking forward to see your Truck finished :P

That looks great! I think we were in chat a few times as you were getting ready but I don't think I've seen the final product yet. Do you have a link to the coating you used? When I hear polyurethane I think wood coating.

Ed, I have discovered that the Photobucket links will display if you use the direct link as opposed to the IMG link.

The company is in Germany, but maybe it yet is interesting to browse. A private person doesn`t have access to all products (e.g. radar absorbing paint), but that what I got is really of high quality. And as mentioned not to be recognized even on the second gland.

I suppose that a similar product is also available in the USA.

The "underneath paint" that I have used is a 2K-polyurethane system, the clearcoat 1K. Important was, that obvious it is 1K it is resistant against fuel !

Probably the last update of 2016. Yesterday and today I put some doors on. These aren't the final doors but I stuck some on there to make it a little more weather proof.

IMG_20161207_1622511.jpg

If you look at the hinge on this one you can see its not even connected. I couldn't get it to fit the opening with the hinges I had. Also couldn't find the latch for the other end. So I bungie corded it to the interior and then reached through the windshield to roll up the window!

last time I drove through New Ulm (see red door above) I was in Germany.....

That door is from New Ulm MN which I believe is populated with a lot of Germans.

Ed, you're half way there to a 4 seasons work space. You have the tarp, now you just need a torpedo heater and some lumber to prop up the tarp. A pair of Carhart thermal coveralls would help if you get outside of the "heated" zone. ;)
