When the leather boots are used, does the joint still need to be disassembled to install?

No, and that is one very big advantage to them.

Modern CV joint rubber boot that can be adapted to fit the Pin and trunion driveshaft.  I  found that a napa 686-1073  CV rubber boot kit has the small opening to be about the proper size. The large end will require to have the first ring cut back inoder for the rubber to go around the small end of the housing .  This will also reguire the pin to be removed to get the boot on first. Use either a  plastic strap to get the rubber tight against the housing.  These CV rubber are fresh stock

I actually just split my boot with a razor blade, then glued it back together with Crazy Glue. If the rubber is clean it works pretty well.

I just looked at the boot recently & it's still glued together after over 20 years.

CV joint replacement boots are often glued together with something similar. (Cyanoacrylate adhesive)

Here isa picture of the boot that you can use and can get from NAPA for around $20.50.

You will need to cut the end that has the large opening down to the first small ring from the end Bellowa. Then this will slip over the end of the UJ Housing. Then take a 10-12 inch plastic zip tie and pullthis tight to hold it in position on the collar of the UJ bbody.

The smaller end then attaches to the drive shaft and you can use an 8 inch zip tie to hold this end.  Since this is a CV Boot the greae should not affect the rubber.

Then when you want to remove the boot you just have to clip the zip tie and you then can work on the inside to grease of check on the unit.

Not MoPar original but for a driver this will work and you now have a good solid rubber boot that can  collapse as the shaft  moves inward and out. and it flexes on the ends

I also have saved this as a document and if you send me your home email I will send it to you.

Aside from finding a leather boot on e-bay or elsewhere, has anyone ever made one out of scrap leather? I'm kind of interested in how that would work. I suppose you would have a sewn or laced seam, which would have to be closed up tightly. Anyone ever toyed around with this?

The correct Leather cover should have the leather cone stitched to it.  The leather cone went into the small end of the housing. The small leather cone wrapped around the  shaft the had the ball end. This small cone prevented the grease that was inside the main body from  working its way out of the body  and into the space between the end of the shaft.

So the leather cover by itself yes will keep out the water and dust but the inner cone is also necessary to prevent the grease form going all over the place.

I have seen on ebay the leather cover with the cone and then are going for $50 each  I have a couple of these complete leather cones.

There is/was also a replacement boot with the cone attached. That is what I have on the car now and I purchased them from, I think, Roberts. When I called they said they had two different styles and one was more complicated than the other so I asked for the complicated type. The cone part had snaps to assemble it and cover had two overlapping pieces instead of one to make a good seal. I've had them on for several thousand miles now and they still look like they are doing their job.

Try searching on the net- empi 86-1073 d

Ebay had them for $10-12 free shipping

Lots of other also sites also come up.

Shipping from Napa is slow also, many parts come from down south or east coast.

If your not in a big hurry- - -

The # in Rich's post shows it as among others. 1986 Chrysler Lebaron 2.2 left inner. Sometimes it works better to tell the parts guy what it is for (even if it isn't what you need it for)

Got the boot from advance auto we got it to fit over but couldn't get to Thur so I ended up cutting it and zip tie and super glue it worked so I guess for 24 bucks it was ok
