Mark D Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Just thought I'd share a few photos from my water pump change for posterity. Waife called at noon to say that my pump arrived from Roberts, so I took off for the afternoon and promptly went home and performed the surgery. Happy to say it was painless and the patient was gladly making no more squeaky noise as I drove her off to the local cruise in by 6pm! Interesting to note, the new t-stat that Roberts sent looked nothing like the old and it was in good shape so I put it back in until I can learn more about that situation. Was able to partially pull out the water distribution tube with one finger. I used high temp RTV on both sides of all gaskets before I put her back together. Somehow forgot to get a completion shot... Will add that later. Quote
Mark D Posted May 23, 2011 Author Report Posted May 23, 2011 Will add a couple more of the completed surgery tomorrow. Guage shot shows her running at full temp. Quote
RobertKB Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Congratulations! It is always good when a plan goes as planned. It is not always that way as we all know. Your distribution tube must be in great shape to slide out that easily. Another plus. Quote
TodFitch Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Nice when everything goes so smoothly. I think you are looking for Chrysler part 867040 for your thermostat. The NAPA number for that is THM 55. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 It looks like you had to put some longer bolts in. Tom Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 The thermostat that Roberts sent you is a choke type thermostat. You want a bypass type thermostat such as the ThM55 that Todd mentioned. That's assuming you have an external bypass block and pump. Quote
YukonJack Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 The new pump looks a lot different (thicker). Why? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 The new pumps are thicker in that 1 spot and have an extra tap for a heater hose. I suspect they mimic a late 50s pump and therefor can be used on more models. Quote
Mark D Posted May 24, 2011 Author Report Posted May 24, 2011 I've read several posts regarding stuck distribution tubes, it was surprising that is slid out so easily. One finger was all it took. Quote
Mark D Posted May 24, 2011 Author Report Posted May 24, 2011 Thanks for the part number. I'm confused as to why Roberts would have sent me the other... A cursory look at the old t-stat and I saw what the action was. It was clear that the hot water bypasses the Tstat for the heater line. So I'll order a replacement and drop that in the parts box for the fall when I plan to strip the engine paint, degrease and repaint. Quote
Mark D Posted May 24, 2011 Author Report Posted May 24, 2011 The new pump shipped from Roberts with one extra long bolt to cover the casting change visible in the water pump photo. Also included where three gaskets and a plug which fits in the tapped hole. Not sure what thats for, suspect the pump has mulitple mopar applications. Quote
Bingster Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 So if I want a rebuilt pump like the one I take off my car, who sells those? Quote
Mark D Posted May 24, 2011 Author Report Posted May 24, 2011 I've seen them on E-bay, but the price was 3x what I paid from Roberts. I think Bernbaum sells them as well, not sure they are NOS or new castings. NAPA told me that they'd have to place a factory order if I wanted one from them. Price was comparable to Roberts, but lead time was weeks away. NAPA did a search on their network and said there was nothing in the US... Quote
Young Ed Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Mark that's crazy. The one I bought last June was supposedly the last one in the US. You'd think they'd have restocked by now. FYI my napa one looks just like yours and probably came from the same manufacturer. Quote
Mark D Posted May 24, 2011 Author Report Posted May 24, 2011 Here's the link to the one I saw on ebay for $190.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360356415488&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT Quote
TodFitch Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 So if I want a rebuilt pump like the one I take off my car, who sells those? You could just have the one you took off your car rebuilt. Arthur Gould has a pretty good reputation for that. Arthur Gould 5r Main St. Kings Park, NY 11754 Telephone: +1.631.269.009 http://arthurgouldrebuilders.com/ Quote
RobertKB Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) I believe Terrill Machine has them. Not sure of price. I bought a new one from them years ago for my '38 Chrysler. Very nice to deal with. Terrill Machine Company 1008 CR 454 phone (254) 893-6006 Deleon, TX 76444 I couldn't find a web address for them. Edited May 24, 2011 by RobertKB Add address information Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Another one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/38-39-41-42-48-49-50-PLYMOUTH-SPECIAL-DELUXE-WATER-PUMP-/380342361431?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item588e2bdd57 Tom Quote
maverick Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 So if I want a rebuilt pump like the one I take off my car, who sells those? you can bey a rebuild kit from bernbaums for about $50. i rebuilt mine with it but have not installed and tested the pump yet. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Unless you are going for a 100point restoration I don't see why you'd want a rebuilt one when new ones are available for a decent price. Quote
ptwothree Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I got mine for $40 at O'Reilly's internal bypass for a '51 218.... Quote
captden29 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 :oi used to live on long island near gould. had several pumps done by him. they are all still working well. i believe mr gould retired and sold the company, but i had at least one pump done by the new owners. the gould shop used to be his basement in a beautiful long island suburb. the house was beautiful, but the smell was like a shop of the kind that it was. don't know how his wife stood it, and it had to be bad for their health to live there. i wanted my original pump back in the car, so a rebuild was what i did. dennis Quote
