55 Fargo Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Hi all, bought 4 matching Good Year Allegra tires, P205 75 15 used tires, they were on an insurance wreck. The tires are in great shape, pics make them look dirty and older, but there not, they were made abouyt 5 years ago, which in a northern climate like Canada is not bad. I paid $120 cdn for the 4 tires, now to get them mounted..... PS I know that some will not agree with me using used tires, but finances dictate this, these tires are in great shape, and were never puncture repaired.... Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Hay that great! Sometime people on this site want to spend big bucks for tires they will never get any extended amount of miles on. You kind of feel the way I do as if I put 500 miles a year on my old Dodge it would take me along time to make up the difference with tires that cost 200 dollars a peice over some used tires that cost 100 dollars a set and still have a good DOT Date on them. michael.warshaw Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 youll be fine with them, a tire is a tire. Quote
1950 Special Deluxe Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 I bought 4 of the same size used tires last year for $75 off of Kijiji here in Saskatoon. A co-worker had a Princess Auto tire mounting machine. I installed them at his house using the balancing beads(Air Soft pellets) mentioned on this forum in a different thread. I bought the oval valve stems from a tire wholesaler for $30 for 5. So, for just over $100 I have 4 good radials. Last year, I put on 150 miles. This year I hope for 500 miles. I REALLY want WWW tires, but not yet. Quote
PatS.... Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Nothing wrong with used tires, especially if you know where they came from. I try to buy good used take offs or even factory blems if I can. Better those than new Chinese Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Hey Fred, With tires being so expensive I too hunted and bought (4) excellent used-the ad says new-but they were somewhat used! ----8.20 X 15 Denmans for $300.00 after some excellent negotiating for my 1950 NewYorker. Denmans are/were a very high end expensive classic tire. I too am very happy and always satisfied on good priced/used items! Saved me a lota $$$ ! Bob Quote
Martin53Cranbrook Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 that's a hell of a deal, i need to find some tires for my car soon Quote
greg g Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Fred the 205's are a bit short of diameter. 26 vs 28.7. I had them on my car when I put it back on the road. Speedo/odo was off you > 10%. I switched to 225's on the rear, still running the 205's on the front. Not saying you shouldn't run them but you might want to look for some taller ones for the rear down the road. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 The 205s will work OK, but the ones I ran on the convert for a while made the car sit about an inch lower. I prefer the 215 size, but for now will have to keep the bias plies. They used to keep a rack or two of decent used tires at the big chain tire stores, like Goodyear. Sometimes independent used tire dealers get good items. And, of course, craigslist. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 I still have a full set of radials, rims and balanced for sale if anyone is interested? $130 dollars for the set! Fits most older mopars! Quote
thrashingcows Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 I will run used tires with no hesitation. As long as they are under 10 years old they are good to go. Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 16, 2011 Author Report Posted May 16, 2011 Tire are on and mounted, nice tires, not a bad look, but not as nice as Firestone bias WW tires of course. The bad news is this, I have 2 rims that were slightly bent. They balanced okay, and are not bad, but are still bent, so will need to replace them.... Quote
greg g Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 You might be able to find some one locally who can straighten the if they are not severely bent. check with your local body shops, they will likely poit you in the right direction. Quote
Desotodav Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 I had a fellow over here in Oz straighten most of my rims - costly but effective! I wouldn't consider replacing them if they are just slightly bent. Desotodav Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 I only see one side. Are they white on the other side? Raised letter? If white will you install them white side out? Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 16, 2011 Author Report Posted May 16, 2011 (edited) Hi all, tires are blackwall both sides Don, the rims are just slightly bent or I would feel it. I am thinking of buying 2 later model Mopar rims, as I run dull disc hubcaps anyway. Here are 2 pics, I will purty up the tires later and take a better pic, it is real dusty here today... PS here are 3 reasons why I needed to buy used tires and cannot finish this car to my liking right now, but what the heck, it will have to wait for a while.. Edited May 16, 2011 by Rockwood Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 17, 2011 Author Report Posted May 17, 2011 Here she is all cleaned up and ready to go dancing. Do not use the wet-look tire stuff, as 1 trip down the gravel road makes it look like $hit. Quote
maurice wade Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 Just a work of caution when mounting new tires on old rims with new style tire machines. Be very careful that the new tire machines do not bend the old rims. The Goodyear tire shop in my hometown bent all my rims. If the tires are hard to go on the rim, don't let them force the tires on the rim. Quote

These tires came off and the new went on with ease, the Guy doing the job was careful and gentle, and I was watching over. Lets face it, the rims are over 60 years old, who knows the history. The car drives and still handles alright. I will be looking for newer rims, as mentioned I run ful disc caps, so can use new type rims without hub cap clips.... Quote
RobertKB Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 Fred, if the rims balanced OK they sure can't be out much. I wouldn't worry about different rims and only keep an eye open for any cheap alternatives if and when available. New tires look good! Quote

Yes they balanced out, the 2 slightly bent whels, the other 2 were fine infact 1 wheel needed no weights it was dead-on.... Quote
