Lefebvre Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 While taking my steering wheel off - the horn button spring got away and I can't find it. Any idea if there are replacements out there if I can't find it? Thanks, Mike Quote
RobertKB Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 I have one but it would have to come with the rest of the horn mechanism as it is hard to sell the rest of the parts without the spring. If interested, email or PM. Quote
Charlie Olson Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 For future reference, an old 50's mechanic taught me to attach a long piece of dental floss to small and or compressed parts. The long tail of floss is easier to spot than the small part which either fell or flew. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 Those horn button springs aren't all that small........but, if misplaced they might as well be. Quote
windsor8 Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 I know that parts can vanish so I would get a very bright light and start crawling on the floor and try to locate the spring. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 i got one pm if interested thanks mike w Quote
Andydodge Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 The spring that lower radiator hoses use is very close to the same diameter & strength, and possibily cheaper.......lol.....andyd Quote
Lefebvre Posted April 21, 2011 Author Report Posted April 21, 2011 Thanks everyone - I'll get the bright light and look around real well tonight - I've already done that twice, but it doesn't seem like it could have gone that far. Mike Quote
Phil Martin Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 After you replace it the old one will jump right out of hiding. Then you will kick yourself for not seeing it. Quote
Drdialtone Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I have an odd situation with my horn button. It activates when I push the ring top or bottom, right but NOT left. Bad contact? Before I take it apart and watch my spring jump out to never-never land (!) is this sign of a bad switch or dirty contact perhaps? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 No guess on the contact, but I think if it were me, I'd just leave it be and not "left honk". Quote

Sounds like the horn ring is bent just enough on that side to keep the contacts from closing. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I try to honk mine gently, as those rings are only so strong. Ever notice how many rings are missing either the top or bottom portion? Quote
Drdialtone Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Bob, Wise words! Just say no to "left honking!!" Too funny. Sometimes it's the simple answers that make the best solutions. And as my ring is still (fingers crossed) without breaks or cracks I'll follow the recommendations to honk-it-easy. Man, I love the sense of humor in this group. I'm wondering how I bottle some of it up and spray it around my workplace... hmmm. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Oh......and I try not to overwork the original horns. To allow them a little respite, I also have an oogah horn, a siren and another old horn that sorta goes "beep, beep." Thought about a roadrunner horn, but they're 12 volts. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 You can try removing it and rotating the spring. The flat spot where the spring ends can make a difference. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 I try to honk mine gently, as those rings are only so strong.Ever notice how many rings are missing either the top or bottom portion? as the driver is usually laying down on the horn as they are slamming the brakes...body weight is by laws of motion si increasing pressure despite the fact the horn does not get louder..but usually loud enough to keep others from hearing the O-**** usttered during this time.. Could be one of those things to do when just making sure all is in order. Or translate: When I want to be out of the house with the car that doesn't tell me what to do!! Like a boy and his dog, this is guy and his car time. Quote
